Review Icon"We (family with 2 kids of 11 and 13 y) spent 2 weeks in October 2015 at ZA12. The villa was well equipped (especially the dish washer is not found that often in other properties) and clean, everything was in good condition. We enjoyed relaxing in the quiet garden or jumping into the pool after some trips in the surroundings. We had our meals on the terrace all days. If you are looking for a quiet and undisturbed holiday we can definitely recommend it !"

Review Icon"We really enjoyed our stay here. The setting was beautiful and we enjoyed 6 days of sunshine while we were there. We did enjoy lounging around the pool in the sun and our two year old loved the yard to play in. The hosts were helpful when we had questions about things to do in the area. We stayed in the apartment. The kitchen was well equipped and the living room was very cosy. The biggest bonus was the orange and lemon trees in the backyard that were FULL of fruit!! We lived off oranges most of our trip! Would definitely consider staying here again if in the area."

The accommodation is close to the quiet village of Orgiva which has some cafes and restaurants and suitable for picking up some supermarket essentials. Would recommend for people seeking out an authentic Spanish village looking for a quiet escape to a beautiful location."

A beautiful village of Orgiva, stunning mountain scenery around and well kept grounds with the lovely unique Moorish styled accommodation and a good sized pool (essential - with shade nearby if preferred!) We had a great time, and certainly will return next year. The owners had the perfect balance in our opinion, always available if required for advice on where to go, what to see and what not to miss out on, but were totally left alone to enjoy the place to ourselves! If you are looking for a busy trashy holiday then this isn't for you. The place to go if you want to sample Spanish life at its best!"

The place is magical!

"What can we say – the most beautiful setting for a lovely home – we heard nothing but bird song! "

The little hamlet of Tijola is an excellent holiday location with its mountain landscapes all around and its proximity to the coast, to Sierra Nevada's ski slopes and to the city of Granada, home of the Alhambra and many other cultural treasures.

It is here that this farmhouse, set in 2,500 m2 of gardens and grounds, has been completely renovated by its enterprising British owners who, after years of endeavour have proudly created their very own Moorish mini-palace.

The attention to detail and design is fantastic. They visited Fez, Meknes and Chefchouen in Morocco as well as many trips to the Alhambra Palace as they became increasingly inspired by Spain's Moorish past.

Their perfectionism has paid off: echoes of Granada's Moroccan style are subtly present almost everywhere you look.

We enjoyed every bit of our stay

"The villa is like paradise on earth, so many flowers, so many roses and fruit trees, so many birds singing the best they can and such an amazing sky".

The ornamental window grilles were inspired by antique metalwork they found in Granada's old Arab quarter; an archway in Meknes was the influence behind the elegant arches of the villa's terrace.

They drove 1,000 miles just to get the green slate tiles for the entrance courtyard!

Inside, mirrors of carved and gilded camel bone reflect Moroccan lamps and rugs glowing in jewel shades. Painted cedar shelves and inlaid tables are set off by walls of dark ochre or deep blue.

In the tiled courtyard, a gently bubbling marble fountain makes a central feature. And a gently curving plaster wall pierced with arched peepholes has been given a colour wash of soft faded rose, a canvas for the real roses growing on it.

A perfect holiday

The garden, with the inviting swimming pool as a central feature, has been designed to make the most of its established fruit trees and centuries-old olive trees which are now carpeted by a thriving lawn. Rose and oleander hedges provide privacy.

From the terrace you can see lemon, orange and peach trees as well as the startling scarlet blossoms of pomegranate, Granada's historic emblem. There's even a small herb garden for guests to use when they are cooking.

Part of the property is the owners own home. They have their own entrance and live there discretely and out of the way of paying guests.

The guest property comprises a self contained two bedroomed villa on the ground floor and a three bedroomed apartment on the first floor of the property.

These combine perfectly for six or more guests who have private use of the pool and gardens.

The Guest Villa

Entering from the courtyard, the living room with its blue walls and contrasting fabric colours is comfortably furnished. It is well equipped with a ceiling fan, satellite TV, video/DVD recorder, (the owners have a library of videos and DVDs available), wood burning stove and radiator.

There are two bedrooms, one double and one twin bedded. Both with ceiling fans, air-conditioning, central heating, large fitted wardrobes and luxury bed linen. There are fabulous views from every window.

The kitchen which overlooks the Moorish courtyard is modern and very well equipped. Indoor space is completed with the beautifully tiled bathroom.

There are various outside dining and relaxing areas to choose from, including a Moroccan arched veranda and an open aspect room.

Natural world

"Our holiday was beautiful and memorable in every sense - the setting, the bougainvillea and olive trees, the casa itself in its stunning Morrocan style".

The 10 metre x 5 metre pool reflects the style of the villa and is set among the orange, lemon, olive, palm and jacaranda trees. Relaxing by the pool amongst the olive groves with the superb mountain vistas, you will occasionally hear the sound of goats bells in the distance and see horses trotting past.

 

The Apartment

This has been designed to offer flexibility of accommodation, the focus of which is a large balcony area with splendid views over the small pueblo of Los Tablones and the Contraviesa mountain range.

From here, french windows open to a comfortably furnished sitting room equipped with TV, video/DVD player, ceiling fans, air-conditioning and central heating.

There are three double bedrooms, all with large fitted wardrobes, ceiling fans, air-conditioning, central heating and luxury bed linen. There are two bathrooms. The partly open-plan kitchen is fully fitted and very well equipped.

A beautiful oasis of calm

Nestling among the olive groves of Tijola, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the villa is a quiet and peaceful retreat located three kilometres from the market town of Orgiva with its bars, restaurants, supermarkets and thriving weekly market.

Granada, less than an hour away, is an amazing city of unique shops, an Arab quarter, cafes and restaurants and, of course, the famous Alhambra Palace, with its fantastic architecture and ancient, beautiful gardens dating back to the 11th century.

The Sierra Nevada ski slopes near Granada are about an hour and twenty minutes away. Among Europe's highest resorts it has a long season, normally from the end of November to the end of April or even into May.

Beaches to the south at Salobreña are about a 35 minute drive from here. Or you can travel a little further on to Almuñecar and La Herradura on the Costa Tropical, or to Nerja on the Costa del Sol.

If you prefer something a little more active, there is no better place anywhere to walk, climb, cycle or horse ride than in the magnificent mountain scenery of Las Alpujarras. Enjoy, too, the eight centuries of Moorish heritage in the traditional, white-washed, high mountain villages.

Maybe you will prefer to stay right here, in this villa designed with the 16th century Alhambra Palace in mind, but with all the luxuries and comforts of the 21st century thrown in too!

This is an excellent base from which to explore this delightful and very beautiful part of Andalucía.

Excursions

  • Órgiva is a natural communication centre: four roads depart from here, one linking Las Alpujarras with Salobreña and the Costa Tropical to the south; another heads west, through Lanjarón, leading on to Granada. A third one, through Torviscón, takes one through the foothills of the Contraviesa into the remoter villages of the Eastern Alpujarras; the fourth winds up into the Sierra Nevada, ascending to Pampaneira, Bubión, Capileira, Trevélez and the other high mountain villages.
  • Órgiva is an interesting - many would call it unique - mix of modern Spanish, more traditional Alpujarran characteristics and seekers of an alternative lifestyle.
  • All seem to live harmoniously here, local dumper-truck drivers alongside tai-chi practitioners; traditional Spanish Catholics alongside Zen Buddhists. It's an eclectic mix and all the more interesting for it.
  • It has developed service industries to cater for the needs of a very wide catchment area. Everything from supermarkets and pizzerias, banks and building suppliers, camp sites and petrol stations. The weekly (Thursday morning) market is not to be missed.
  • The Costa Tropical is just half an hour away. The closest beaches are at Salobreña. Further along the coast, there's bigger Almuñecar, the beautiful bay of La Herradura and then the much more "international" resort of Nerja at the start of the Costa del Sol. With a strong British presence (you can have a curry here ... ) it boasts 16 kilometres of beaches with powdery sand and sparkling clear water.
  • On this stretch of coast you can choose between fairly isolated, beautiful coves or any one of the different sized resort towns. Cheerful, peaceful, laid back places in the best tradition of the Spanish seaside, a relaxed lunch at one of the beach bars is highly recommended - even in winter if the sun is shining!
  • Just 45 minutes away, Granada is, of course, a must-see city. Soaring high above is the spectacular back drop of the snow-covered Sierra Nevada mountains. And what a city lies below, a city of classical beauty, the jewel in the Spanish Crown.
  • The mesmerising Alhambra Palace and its exquisite gardens, one of the world's greatest wonders; the narrow, cobbled streets and beautiful walled gardens of the ancient Arab quarter, El Albaicín; the magnificent Cathedral, just one of many superb examples of Renaissance architecture; the caves of Sacramonte, nostalgic legacy of the gypsies.
  • A city which inspired García Lorca, Andalucía's finest poet, it is, above all, a people's city, full of life and colour, energy and fun.
  • On the northern slopes of Sierra Nevada, top class skiing is 1¼ hours drive away. This can be excellent but avoid weekends, when the Granadinos swarm up from the city.
  • If wonderful mountain scenery is your thing, then stay right here in Las Alpujarras! Between the highest mountains in Spain and the Mediterranean Sea, this is a joyous land of sunshine, snowy mountains and some of the most splendid scenery imaginable. From the snows to the sea, there are panoramic views in every direction, from the peaks of Veleta and Mulhacén to the southern sierras and the Mediterranean beyond.
  • The high mountains have their own special beauty: wild and brooding in winter, they come alive in early summer with the scents of wild herbs and the spectacle of tiny, brilliantly coloured flowers, many of them unique to Sierra Nevada.
  • Altitude and sun have combined to evolve more endemic botanical species in Las Alpujarras than in all the rest of Europe. Mountain goats, wild boar, foxes, eagles, goshawks and partridge inhabit the sierras. Mules and donkeys still labour in the fields, sheep and goats graze the hillsides. Trout fill the rivers.
  • The Moors took refuge in these hills and resisted here, maintaining their customs and way of life for well over a hundred years after they were expelled from Granada in 1492 by their Christian conquerors. Las Alpujarras was their final battlefield in Spain.
  • Their legacy is to be seen everywhere: in the distinctive architecture of the mountain villages and in the intricate system of irrigation waterways which they built and which still keep the landscape green and fertile, fed by the snows melting high in the sierras above.
  • The architecture of the little mountain villages is unique in Europe and is identical to Berber originals in the Atlas mountains of Northern Africa. With dwellings characterised by flat roofs and prominent chimney pots, the villages were built by the Berber settlers whose creation imitated and followed the half-natural, half-man made designs of their own mountain lands.
  • Beautiful in their simplicity, the villages appear to tumble haphazardly down the steep hillsides, connected by a labyrinth of narrow, winding cobbled streets. A picture to behold, glistening white in the sun, roses and geraniums spilling from every nook and cranny.

  • Las Alpujarras offers some of the finest mountain walking, horse riding and cycling anywhere in Europe.
  • And, of course, here you are well placed to travel to the ski resort high in La Sierra Nevada.
  • On the Costa Tropical, activities on offer include scuba, cavern and technical diving, as well as horse riding and tennis, paragliding, climbing, and abseiling.
