Las Barreras is a tiny hamlet just a kilometre or so to the west of Órgiva in Southern Spain. It's surrounded by olive groves with fabulous mountain views, and its a very handy location too as the little market town is just a few minutes away.
It is here that you will find this lovely and beautifully renovated 200 year old farmhouse. Gleaming white in the Andalusian sunshine, its mostly single-storey buildings range around pretty gardens overlooking the crystal-blue waters of the gated swimming pool on the terrace below.
Set in beautiful hillside surroundings within its own two acres of mature orchards, olive groves and delightful gardens, there are lots of outdoor spaces to enjoy.
It's a delightful location, splendidly rural and yet just a 20-minute walk into town along a goat track and quiet back lanes.
From the large terrace there are delightful views, down over the swimming-pool and across the semi-tropical valley of the Rio Guadalfeo to Sierra Lujár which rises up spectacularly on the other side of the river.
The first floor bedroom also has a little private terrace, shaded by wisteria.
Inside, the living/dining room, under its high beamed ceiling, is a comfortable space with sofas, a wood burning stove and a large dining table. Adjoining is a stylish and well-equipped kitchen with marble worktops. The Smeg cooker has a five-ring gas burner and electric oven, and along with the dishwasher, large fridge/freezer, microwave and spacious Indian cupboard - cooking is a pleasure.
The kitchen leads through to the library which has a good selection of books, maps and information about the area; and to the communal bathroom which has a washing machine, WC, sink and shower.
The beautiful, glass-covered internal patio, with a trickling fountain, is the heart of the house – with doorways leading from the living room and kitchen onto the garden terrace and to bedrooms.
In 2015 the house was completely renovated and great care was taken to modernise it, while carefully maintaining its original character. There are handmade chestnut wardrobes and shelves inset into the walls which are up to a metre thick in places. Handmade tiles and beautiful ceramic floor and wall tiles add wonderful touches of colour. Original artwork adorns the walls of of all the rooms and the internal patio is full of tropical plants.
There is wifi in all bedrooms, living areas and outside terraces, including the pool terrace. The house is fully insulated and has central heating, a wood-burning stove and heated towel rails in en-suite bathrooms for cosy winter holidays.
Ideal for families and groups of friends – the house provides flexible accommodation with comfortable en-suite bedrooms to retreat to at the end of the day. There are seven bedrooms:
The Orange and Lemon rooms can be twins or doubles and they share a bathroom separated by a small passage – Ideal for a family or friends sharing. Orange has its own entrance at the front of the house and air-conditioning and Lemon opens directly into the internal patio and has a ceiling fan.
The Almond and Fig rooms are ideal for a family. Almond has a double bed and an en-suite bathroom and a door onto the internal patio. The adjoining Fig room has beds for two young children (under 12) and a door to the living room.
The Wisteria room is a few metres from the main house across the garden terrace and up a some steps to a balcony with wonderful views of the garden and surrounding mountains – This comfortable double has an en-suite bathroom. There is air-conditioning plus a ceiling fan.
The Olive room is a double or twin, beneath the Wisteria room with its own door leading directly to the garden. It has air-conditioning. The en-suite bathroom has a walk in accessible shower and grab bars and the room is accessible for wheelchair users.
The Jasmine room is a few paces from the main house entrance. This large (26 sqm), step-free double or twin room has an en-suite bathroom. There is air-conditioning, a ceiling fan and wood-burning stove for the cooler months. ideal for those wanting complete privacy from the main house.
All bedrooms have double-glazed windows and fly-screens. All bathrooms have showers and the Orange/Lemon bathroom has a bath. A floorplan is available on request to help you understand the layout better.
Guests have 800 m2 of pretty, colourful lawned gardens to enjoy plus the fabulous, totally irresistible 10 m x 5 m swimming pool, which has solar heating (this can increase the water temperature by between 5 and 7º and certainly extends the swimming season).
The gardens and pool are fenced and gated and there is a built-in charcoal barbecue.
Like everywhere else here, views extend across delightful countryside to the beautiful mountain ranges beyond.
An attractive, wooden yoga cabin – The Olive Hut – is another special feature in the gardens. Ten metres away from the main house, this is a bright and airy space (40 m2) which can serve as an extra living room, to play table tennis, read and listen to music, or, of course, practice yoga.
The house is accessible to allow wheelchair users and those with limited mobility enjoy holidays here. The living areas, kitchen, library and main bathroom and Fig bedroom are all on one level with wide doors and The Olive room and its en-suite bathroom is fully accessible. There is a ramp leading from the library to the garden terrace and from the internal patio to the garden terrace - which is a few metres from the Olive bedroom. Further details can be provided.
With so much living space, both inside and out, this is a great place both to enjoy being all together or to escape to a quiet corner whenever you want to. An ideal property for families with children, extended families or groups of friends – or anyone who just wants to combine rural peace and quiet with visits to Granada, the mountains and the Mediterranean coast.

There's so much to do from here. For the energetic there's wonderful hiking in the mountains, year-round cycling, downhill skiing in winter (Órgiva is 1½ hour's drive from the ski slopes) and horse riding, as well as water-sports and golf on the coast.
And, when you need to stock up with a few provisions - or just fancy a stroll down to town - don't take the car: there's a lovely country path through the olive groves which will take you into Órgiva – a lovely 20-minute walk past a 16th c. olive mill.
If you want a little beach life, it's just over half an hour's drive from here to the Costa Tropical and its Mediterranean resort towns Salobreña, Almuñecar and Nerja.
On this stretch of coast you can choose between fairly isolated, beautiful coves or any one of the different sized resort towns. A casual fish or seafood lunch at one of the beach restaurants is always a delight.
Discover the eight centuries of Moorish heritage in the traditional, white-washed mountain villages and their flourishing local craftwork (hand woven carpets, textiles and wicker-work), not to mention the regions' cuisine and excellent food products such as the mountain-cured Trevelez ham.
Not to be missed are visits to Granada and the Alhambra Palace; you can also drive to Sevilla and Córdoba from here.
The nearest bar is just a 10-minute walk where you can also pick up a regular bus service to Granada and the spa town of Lanjarón – great for a day out without the car.
Or maybe you prefer to stay right here, enjoying the timeless rhythm of Las Alpujarras, wandering the charming little goat tracks around the property, perhaps relaxing under an olive tree with a good book, watching the sunset tinting the mountains in mauves and pinks, laying down under the moonlight to watch stars shining brightly from a pure sky.

The owners live in a neighboring property within the grounds, with their own separate gardens, driveway and entrance – your privacy is guaranteed. However, If required they are normally on hand to give advice about the local area

Jasmine room annex is included in bookings of more than 12 people and can be rented by groups of 12 or less for 280€ per week.
Up to 2 infants under the age of 2 are not charged, if sleeping in a cot. 2 cots, 2 high-chairs and a baby monitor are provided.
Central heating (6 hours per day) and reasonable supply of wood is provided for holidays in December, January and February. €15 a day at other times, payable locally.
