Review Icon"Just want to say a huge heartfelt thank you for your help and support with organizing our holiday at this beautiful villa. We've had fantastic time and found Andalusia absolutely beautiful and such a diverse region. Our local agent was a great host and provided us with advise and tips on what to see and where to go as well as he was always there to help us. It was a true pleasure to have him nearby :)"

Review Icon"Very beautiful house with majestic views of Gibraltar and even Africa, with a delightful garden. The pool was delightful to refresh from a warm Spanish day. "

Review Icon"We visited this villa in September 2015 and thoroughly enjoyed it. With 2 adults and 2 kids (3 and 1) we were looking for somewhere with a pool which was quiet and not too hot that the kids couldn't sleep. This villa provided the perfect solution. The pool was warm enough to use at this time of year (temp was about 26C most days). The kids loved it! The acomodation itself is beautiful. A 3 bed detached villa with a great pool. There are steps in for the kids and the pool area is surrounded by grass. There is a sun room which is fantastic. The full width of the property is lined by movable glass panels which give you the feeling you are sitting outside whatever the weather. The property is in great condition and was spotlessly clean throughout. The situation, up a mountain, may be challenging to reach but affords spectacular views over the costa del Sol, down to the Rock of Gibraltar and on over the med to North Africa. The view is initially hard to believe it is so beautiful. It can be enjoyed from the pool and garden, the sun room or the master bedroom. In fact all views are spectacular form this vantage point, whichever way you look. If you are looking for a warm and quiet villa with a lovely pool and breathtaking views you would be hard pushed to find one better."

Review Icon"An excellent choice for a family holiday villa - rural and private with own extremely accessible pool and shade, yet with easy access to the coast if wanted, and with various good quality, differently priced restaurants available within 2-5 minutes drive."

Villa Description

High in the hills

With wonderful countryside all around, mountains to the north and blue sea to the south, this villa is a haven for rest and relaxation.

From the coast road to Casares is an ever changing landscape from pasture, with grazing cows, to rocky limestone crags with eagles circling overhead. It's in this setting that you'll find this sweet holiday home with marvellous sea views.

The town of Casares is a few minutes' drive away from the villa and is an authentic, whitewashed pueblo, prettily clinging to the side of the mountain. To get to the house, bypass Casares on the coast road, in the direction of Estepona and take the green and winding mountain road. The sun shines through the Mediterranean oaks - encinas - and the umbrella pines, so typical of the region. As you come around the corner you'll marvel at the sea view in front of you and congratulate yourself on choosing a holiday here!

Comfy bedrooms

Every bedroom has an en suite bathroom and views to the garden.

The house is accessed by a well maintained, single lane, concrete track for 1.7 km, climbing up through the pines as the hillside rolls away down to the sea. There is plenty of space for parking in front of the house which is secured by gates. The house also has an interior alarm system. The entry to the house is through a small patio courtyard and a colonnaded veranda. The veranda has been enclosed by glass, letting light in and keeping draughts out.

The villa has three double bedrooms, two in the main house and the third set somewhat apart in an annexe attached to the main house. All the bedrooms have French windows with direct access to the garden. The annexe bedroom opens directly in front of the swimming pool. All three bedrooms have ceiling fans.

Doze the day away

The garden is a pleasant place for just reading and snoozing and cooling off with a dip in the pool.

There are French windows from the living room to a wonderful conservatory that has retractable glass 'curtains' which can be opened to catch a summer breeze. Earlier or later in the year, the warmth and cosiness of this 'inside, outside' room is incredible, it feels like you are outside, enjoying the sea view of Gibraltar and beyond, but from the comfort of being indoors. And yes, the view below is from the house. The warmth can be cranked up even more because there is a wood burner in the corner. There is plenty of space for everyone to relax here, with three sofas, two armchairs and a pouffe.

A dining table seating eight is also in this conservatory, allowing you to eat in comfort, al fresco with the glass open, or sheltered with the glass closed, as you wish. Either way, the sunsets here are amazing and form a colourful backdrop to any dining.

With the conservatory open, the pool is just an olive's throw away. The water is accessed by shallow steps and has a cover to keep in the heat overnight. Sunbeds with cushions are provided for guests to recline and chill out in comfort.

The double bedded room in the annexe has a pitched ceiling, built-in wardrobes and en suite bathroom facilities. It is simple and sweet and refreshingly uncluttered. The bathroom comprises a walk-in shower, wc and hand basin.

The second twin-bedded room has direct access to the garden through French windows. These double glazed windows have shutters to keep out sunshine for an afternoon siesta. The en suite bathroom facilities comprise a bath tub with shower over, well-lit mirror, wc and a hand basin, all tiled in a Moorish design.

Cheery inside

The decor of the villa is simple, happy and homely.

The kitchen is bright and cheerful and perfectly suited for a self-catering holiday. Its granite work surfaces are neat and tidy and it has everything you need to make meals for friends and family. The cooking facilities are: an electric oven with four-ring induction hob, twin sinks , fridge freezer and dishwasher. Of course, there is a toaster and kettle, coffee machine etc. along with crockery and cutlery as you would expect.

The kitchen forms part of the living room / diner with the living area having a three-seater sofa and coffee table arranged around a glass fronted wood burner. There is a flat screen TV and sound system to entertain you of an evening. The dining table, close to the kitchen, seats six.

Private sunbathing

There are other villas on the hillsides but no one overlooks the property.

The third bedroom is also a twin-bedded room with built-in wardrobes and a pitched ceiling. It also has French windows which lead out onto the garden. The bathroom is also an en suite with a bath and shower over, wc and basin. With its ceiling fans and sea breeze in the summer, the house doesn't need air conditioning to be comfortable.

The garden is lawned and green with borders of rosemary and succulents, in keeping with the Mediterranean climate. You'll have peace and quiet as there are no neighbours close by, although there are houses to be seen on the hillsides around. From the entrance porch, there are 18 steps up to a flat roof, an azotea, ideal for those who like to sun bathe in privacy.

Marvel at the landscape

The house is ideally located for the more unspoilt beaches of the Costa del Sol.

The house has a utility room where you'll find a fridge freezer,  washing machine, and a sink for laundry should you need to do any. There is also a convenient cloakroom with a wc and vanity unit/basin. There is wifi throughout the house.

The lovely village of Casares is just a few kilometres away from the villa. Here you'll find cafés and bars and shops to stock up for your basic groceries, As you drive past the town itself there are lots of signs for hiking trails and panoramic walks, senderos. The Tourist Office is on the right hand side of the road,  just before you get to the town proper.

On your way to the villa you'll pass by some good eateries: Arroyo Hondo and The Forge, are well known restaurants for a special dinner. Ventas (roadside taverns) are common here and they serve local food economically priced. Venta Victoria is a good one and Venta MariCruz. A Spanish Menu del Dia (set menu, usually with three courses and a drink) is always reasonably priced.

Of course, a holiday is not just about eating, drinking and relaxing! There are other activities close by: beach sports, championship golf courses, shopping and nightlife as well as cultural day trips.

The beaches of the Costa del Sol are just down the road (20 minutes) or, just over an hour's drive away are the gorgeous white beaches and water sports on the Costa de la Luz. For glitzy glamour try Marbella, Puerto Banus and Estepona for a hot night out on the town.

In the opposite direction, literally, through the dramatic mountains of the Serranía Ronda, is the culturally mind-blowing and oh-so-Spanish city of Ronda. Málaga, Jerez and Cádiz are all very much worth visiting, they are certainly do-able as day trips.

Whatever you choose to do, even if it's nothing at all, you'll enjoy doing it based from this panoramic villa.

Around and About

This is an excellent base from which to explore this delightful and very beautiful part of Andalucía.

Excursions

  • La Costa del Sol with its wealth of sandy beaches, sun, fun and nightlife is just 15 / 20 minutes away. Resort towns include Estepona (25 minutes) and glitzy, glamorous Marbella (40 minutes).
  • Gibraltar, steeped in history, VAT free shops … and plenty of fish & chips is also a 40 minute drive from here.
  • Tarifa on the southernmost point of Spain is less than an hour away. Looking directly across the Straits of Gibraltar to Morocco, Africa is so close you feel that you can almost touch it!
  • Beyond lie mile upon mile of magnificent white beaches on Spain's Atlantic coast, La Costa de la Luz.
  • Spain's unique sherry wine region (Jerez and Sanlúcar), is well worth a visit, enhanced no doubt by stopping at one or two of the famous bodegas along the way! Jerez de la Frontera is 1¾ hours.
  • Cádiz (2 hours) continues to evoke the romance, intrigue and mystery of centuries of trade (some legal, some not so) between Europe, Africa and the Americas.
  • There are a plethora of beautiful white villages and hilltop towns to explore and enjoy in the magnificent countryside of the Serranía de Ronda – Gaucín and Genalguacil to name just a couple.
  • And, of course, Casares, just five kilometres away. Because of its stunning setting, perched precariously on the side of a precipitous sandstone buttress, it is known as the "hanging village", one of the most photographed villages in Spain.
  • It is steeped in history with its Roman baths and aqueduct still in place. Climb to the castle at its very top, where the Moors held out against the Catholic troops surrounding the town, and enjoy the breathtaking view clear across the sea to Africa.
  • Talking of which, the fast boat from Tarifa to Tangiers in Morocco takes 35 minutes, so you can be exploring the local souks in just a few hours. Fascinating and colourful, it really is a different world.
  • From Gaucín (25 minutes away) a beautiful road winds over the spectacular mountains to Ronda (45 minutes from Gaucín), with its spectacular gorge and Spain's oldest bullring, Hemmingway’s favourite town in all of Spain.
  • All around Casares, the beautiful scenery of the rugged Sierra Bermeja mountains provide a wonderful backdrop. The crags around Casares are home to a colony of Griffon vultures. These majestic birds, with a wing span of two metres, glide on the thermals high above countryside of deep gorges and pine forested ridges. The Sierra Crestellina Nature Reserve which lies alongside the village is a popular destination for birdwatchers and walkers.
  • Other National Parks not so far away include the fabulous Los Alcornocales Natural Park and, just to the north of Ronda, the Grazalema National Park, one of the most beautiful tracks of mountain anywhere in Europe. Jagged peaks, gorges, chasms, faults and caves, underground rivers and deep canyons are interspersed, here and there, by some of the prettiest villages in Spain, Grazalema, Zahara, Setenil and the other famous "pueblos blancos".
  • Sevilla takes 2½ hours. It is impossible not to be captivated by its exuberant atmosphere: stylish, confident, ancient and proud, yet also convivial, intimate and fun-loving. If you don't know what alegría means, Sevilla is the place to learn!
  • Córdoba and Granada are both within 3 hours drive from here.

Activities

  • There are excellent riding stables ten minutes from here which cater for all - experienced riders and complete novices alike. They will match you up with a horse and a ride to suit your requirements. Reviews are highly complimentary.
  • There's great walking too, with several marked routes through the delightful countryside.
  • Here you are in the heart of the "Costa del Golf" with at least 25 top quality golf courses (including Finca Cortesin, Valderrama, Sotogrande, and San Roque) all within half an hour's drive.
  • On the coast (both the Costa del Sol and the Costa de la Luz) there’s every beach pursuit imaginable, from sailing and windsurfing, diving and snorkelling to whale and dolphin watching.
