Review Icon"Thank you so much for all your help. We had a wonderful stay at ZC24. Ines was so welcoming and friendly, we felt like old friends being welcomed home. She had lit the fire and waited as our plane had been delayed a bit. The property was gorgeous, much bigger than we thought from the photos, and really well appointed. The beds were so comfy, we loved the wooden blinds on the windows which meant that the boys slept in each morning (a first!) and it was great fun exploring the garden in the morning. Even though the weather was mixed we managed to make use of the pool everyday, freezing!! And we enjoyed a BBQ on one of the sunny evenings. It was lovely to be cosy in the evenings with the fire and the central heating. We loved the views, the peace and quiet, walking and exploring the finca. We will certainly recommend the property and Rustic Blue to everyone. And we look forward to booking again, maybe for a longer time in the summer months!"

Review Icon"The quiet and peacefulness of this finca is hard to underestimate. The sunset views from the terrace are stunning and the place is not overlooked and you overlook only the countryside and mountains. The rooms are all comfortable and large (especially the suite upstairs). The pool and pool area are lovely. There are also plenty of shaded areas for eating and drinking outside. You have eagles flying over you as well as the hoots of owls in the evening. The property manager could not have been more helpful. We were there for 2 weeks and there was a complete change of linen and a thorough clean at the end of the first week. All in all great."

Villa Description

Completely secluded

An authentic and very traditional country house, it resides in splendid isolation within its own 90 acres of forest and farmland.

Set on a wooded hillside of wild olives and Spanish oaks, it's a quite magnificent location, with the hills and dales of Los Alcornocoles Natural Park spreading out across the horizon.

Five kilometres south of Gaucín village, here goats, sheep and cattle graze contentedly in one of the most seductively peaceful settings imaginable.

To the south, the little country road winds gently down to Jimena de la Frontera, another delightful Spanish pueblo with Gibraltar, the Mediterranean Sea and Morocco not far beyond.

The farm enjoys the best of both worlds, quiet and completely secluded, yet conveniently close to all amenities. From here its just a 45 minute drive to the coast.

Once a blacksmith's forge and dwellings, it has been in the same family for generations. It is their pride and joy and this shows in the care they have taken in its restoration and upkeep.

As pretty as a picture

Decorated with attractive antiques and old farming artifacts, it retains all its authentic rustic character.

Lovingly and thoughtfully refurbished, they have used traditional materials and finishes throughout, and decorated it with attractive antiques and country artifacts. It retains all its authentic rustic character and it's as pretty as a picture.

From the country road which links Gaucín to Jimena de la Frontera, a little farm lane (in excellent condition) winds gently down the hillside to the property.

One enters through a lovely covered terrace to the side of the house (it's furnished and attractively planted) into the spacious living / dining room. Under the solid timbers of its beamed ceiling there's a sofa and easy chairs and comfortable bench seating too, a rounded, open fireplace (logs are supplied) and a dining table for eight.

Warm, welcoming colours and traditional decor are complemented by satellite TV, DVD, radio and a CD player. With the log fire and central heating throughout the house, this is an excellent choice for winter lets too.

Fabulous views

Views are far and wide, over the delightful hills, dales and cork-oak forests of the Alcornocales Natural Park.

The country kitchen alongside is equally attractive. Large, with plenty of workspace and a breakfast bar, it's fully equipped (oven and hob, washing machine, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, toaster, kettle etc). You will enjoy indulging your culinary creativity here.

Also on the ground floor are three of the bedrooms, one with a large wrought-iron double bed (and with French windows opening to the sunny terrace at the back of the house overlooking the fields and hills beyond), and two neat and tidy twin bedded rooms. A bathroom (with a shower over a full tub) completes the distribution on this floor.

The whole of the upstairs floor is taken up by the huge master bedroom suite which has an en-suite bathroom (shower over small tub).

It's a lovely room, with fabulous views over the hills and dales of the surrounding countryside. Tastefully decorated, there's a comfortable sofa and chairs, a writing desk and other attractive furnishings as well as the double bed, surrounded by soft ochre-painted walls, with splashes of blue here and there to add contrast.

All, of course, under richly dark wooden beamed rafters.

Fun for all the family

With a good sized swimming pool, natural gardens and 90 acres of countryside to explore there's lots for the children to enjoy, too.

The natural gardens at the back of the farmhouse are partly lawned; fragrant mandarin and other mature trees offer plenty of shady spots.

A little pathway leads across the lawn to the fenced off, filtered swimming pool, which is a good size (10 m x 5 m) and has all the accessories - sunbeds, sunshades, an outside shower, a brick built barbecue and sink - for a perfect day under the Andalusian sun.

A jasmine covered sun terrace at the rear of the house has a table and chairs for 10, perfect for those relaxing evening get-together's, where you will enjoy the views over the joyous countryside all around.

If you feel like stretching your legs a little before diner, there's the whole finca, all 90 acres of it, to explore. With so much outside space and the pool securely fenced, this is a fun place for children.

Gaucín is one of the classic white village of Andalucía, spectacularly situated in the mountains behind the Costa del Sol in the Serrania de Ronda.

There are fabulous views at every turn. Its narrow streets house four supermarkets and a traditional butcher, an organic food shop, banks (cash points) and a pharmacy. It has an excellent selection of small restaurants and tapa bars, one of which hosts regular flamenco performances.

There's plenty to do around and about. Whether you want to explore the wonderful nature, breathtaking vistas and first class hiking of the Serranía de Ronda (guided walks, bird watching and horse riding can be arranged), discover the culture and traditions of historic Ronda, or enjoy the beaches and golf courses of the Costa del Sol, there's something for everyone.

And what better, at the end of a lovely day, than to return here to your own little piece of Andalusian country paradise!

Around and About

This is an excellent base from which to explore this delightful and very beautiful part of Andalucía.

Excursions

  • La Costa del Sol with its wealth of sandy beaches, sun, fun and nightlife is just 30 minutes away. Resort towns include Estepona (45 minutes) and glitzy, glamorous Marbella (under an hour).
  • Gibraltar, steeped in history, VAT free shops … and plenty of fish & chips is 1¼ hours away.
  • Tarifa on the southernmost point of Spain is 1½ hours from here. Looking directly across the Straits of Gibraltar to Morocco, Africa is so close you feel that you can almost touch it!
  • Beyond lie mile upon mile of magnificent white beaches on Spain's Atlantic coast, La Costa de la Luz.
  • A taste of Morocco perhaps? The fast boat from Tarifa to Tangiers takes 35 minutes, so you can be exploring the local souks in just a few hours. Fascinating and colourful, it really is a different world.
  • Spain's unique sherry wine region (Jerez and Sanlúcar), is well worth a visit, enhanced no doubt by stopping at one or two of the famous bodegas along the way! Jerez de la Frontera is 2 hours.
  • Cádiz (2¼ hours) continues to evoke the romance, intrigue and mystery of centuries of trade (some legal, some not so) between Europe, Africa and the Americas.
  • One of Europe's most important wetland reserves and bird sanctuaries, the Doñana National Park, is a popular attraction for nature lovers (4 hours). Its enormous variety of bird species include everything from flamingos to imperial eagles.
  • A beautiful road winds over the spectacular mountains to Ronda (45 minutes), with its spectacular gorge and Spain's oldest bullring, Hemmingway’s favourite town in all of Spain.
  • Sevilla takes 2½ hours. It is impossible not to be captivated by its exuberant atmosphere: stylish, confident, ancient and proud, yet also convivial, intimate and fun-loving. If you don't know what alegría means, Sevilla is the place to learn!
  • The fantastic railway between Algeciras on the coast and Ronda, to the north, stops at the little pueblo of Colmenar (20 minutes away). One of Europe’s great short railway journeys, running through landscapes which offer constantly plunging and spectacular views, this is a remarkable and wonderful way to see some of Andalucía's best and most dramatic countryside.
  • There are a plethora of beautiful white villages and hilltop towns to explore and enjoy in the magnificent countryside of the Serranía de Ronda – Jimena de la Frontera, Casares and Genalguacil to name but a few.
  • Nearby National Parks include the fabulous Los Alcornocales Natural Park and the Grazalema National Park, one of the most beautiful tracks of mountain anywhere in Europe. Jagged peaks, gorges, chasms, faults and caves, underground rivers and deep canyons are interspersed, here and there, by some of the prettiest villages in Spain, Grazalema, Zahara, Setenil and the other famous "pueblos blancos".
  • Córdoba and Granada are both 3 hours drive from here

Activities

  • Guided and self-guided walking, horse riding, mountain biking and yoga are all available in or around Gaucín.
  • The village has an excellent municipal swimming pool, a tennis court and gymnasium.
  • For golf enthusiasts, there are at least 25 top quality golf courses (including Finca Cortesin, Valderrama, Sotogrande, and San Roque) within 50 minutes drive.
  • On the coast (both the Costa del Sol and the Costa de la Luz) there’s every beach pursuit imaginable, from sailing and windsurfing, diving and snorkelling to whale and dolphin watching.
