Review Icon"Beautiful property in a gorgeous and still authentic Spanish village. We had everything we needed in the house and it was very well decorated. Pool was pretty and refreshing. Loads of places to eat and drink in the village which is a stones throw from the house. Views in the village are stunning and it was lovely looking into the old castle from the house. Plenty of seating and crockery etc The house manager was very helpful."

Review Icon"Exactly as described, this lovely village house will not disappoint. We have stayed in many properties in Spain over the past decade and I am sure this is up there with the very best available on the market. The larger than expected pool was a particularly pleasant surprise and a welcome refuge from the heat of the day on the roof terrace. Immaculately kept and maintained by the owners and their housekeeper, there was nothing missing in the way of equipment and facilities. I would unhesitatingly recommend this property to anybody."

Review Icon"My husband and I had a fabulous fortnight in Gaucin. The house is right in the heart of this very welcoming village. It is a wonderfully appointed property and deceptively spacious accomodations . We only occupied the main house but the facillities of the casita were available to us including a lovely open dining terrace. The Kitchen is one of the best equipped we have encountered . The bathroom in the main house would not look out of place in a 5 star resort. We swam every day in the wonderful pool that divdes the two parts of the property. It is much larger than it appears and is a wonderful place to cool off.We loved the large roof terrace which has great seating and lounging furniture and offers shade at one end. It Offers veiws over the village to the hills beyond and also the castle, over which eagles cans be seen soaring. Two weeks was not long enough!! "

Villa Description

Two for one

It's effectively two properties joined together to make one superb, really creative home with many different spaces and attractive angles.

In the heart of delightful Gaucín village, one of the most attractive of all the pueblos blancos, near its beautiful church and Moorish castle, this is a fabulous house, rich in character, charm and style.

It's effectively two properties imaginatively joined together to make one superb residence: the main house which one enters from the street, and the Casita (once the original stables) behind it.

Between them, enclosed within high white-washed walls, is a small but very attractive swimming pool with stepping stones along one side joining the two cottages together.

The result is a really creative home, light and airy, with many different spaces and attractive angles. It's lovely!

Light floods in

Traditional, country-style charm is enhanced by comfortable, quality furnishings.

The conversion and refurbishment has been done with care and quality, too. Beautiful wooden double doors open from the quiet little street outside to a hallway / cloakroom which leads through to the main living room, with the kitchen / dining room off to the right.

This is a traditional, country-style room with lovely old floor tiles and plenty of space. It's fully equipped with a dining table for six, oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer and fridge / freezer.

The living room alongside is another really attractive space. Light floods in from the pool area outside, its rustic charm enhanced by comfortable, quality furnishings.

Facilities include a radio/CD player and WiFi broadband internet connection. Three sofas are arranged around the coffee table in front of the log burner.

Stars that twinkle

A really nice place to catch the early morning sunshine or to sit under the stars which twinkle above the floodlit castle at night.

An open staircase (it's unguarded so care needs to be taken with small children) leads to the huge, romantic master bedroom which occupies the whole of the first floor of the main house.

This features an enormous double bed, an open-plan sitting area (with balcony) a couple of steps down with a spectacular bathroom adjoining.

Two double doors open from the bedroom to a pretty, railed terrace which looks down to the pool below and up to Gaucin's famous Moorish castle. Colourfully planted, with its wooden table and chairs, this is a really nice place to catch the early morning sunshine or to sit under the stars which twinkle above the floodlit castle at night.

Up another level brings one to a large, partly shaded, walled roof terrace with superb views, particularly of the nearby church, and the castle high above, dramatically perched on its rocky outcrop.

In the other direction, there are glimpses over the tiled rooftops of the village to Morocco, far away across the sea. This is the place to be if you want to improve your tan, it's a proper little sun trap. Loungers are provided.

Back down in the living room, a path leads from the main house across stepping stones alongside the pool to the converted stables, the casita, behind.

Again, there's no guard on this pathway, so it's not a place for young children or anyone with wobbly legs to be.

Cascading waterfall

The pool is only 4 m x 2 m but it's completely private and very welcoming - absolutely perfect with a gin and tonic comfortably to hand.

The pool is only 4 m x 2 m but it's completely private and very welcoming with its pretty, cascading waterfall tumbling down from an attractively tiled mosaic arch. Mostly it's 1.5 m deep but a little bench seat runs along its length just under the water, providing a place to splash about or, better still, for sitting in the pool with a gin and tonic comfortably in hand!

The pool is heated using solar panels. A wooden sundeck at one end provides a place to loll about between dips.

At the other end of the pool, steps go up to the Casita's completely shaded but open sitting and barbecue area which looks back through a wide archway to the main house beyond the pool.

Here you can dine in the fresh air under its shady calm; you can even light a log fire here on cooler evenings as it also has an open fireplace.

Wonderful views

The roof terrace is a splendid sun trap and enjoys great views, of the nearby church, the castle high above and glimpses all the way to Morocco.

Inside there is a bathroom (shower only) and stairs going up to two bedrooms on the floor above, one with full-sized bunk beds, the other a double bedroom. Both have access to a railed terrace overlooking the pool.

Children are, of course, welcome but because of the open staircases and unguarded swimming pool (It is essential that children are supervised at all times), we don't think this is a suitable property for children under six, or anyone who is infirm.

Merrymaking

Gaucín is beautiful, an enchanting village with fabulous views at every turn. It's good fun too, with several excellent bars and restaurants to choose from.

Parking is usually available on the street just outside the house or close by.

It's a quiet street more or less in the centre of one of Spain's most enchanting little villages. Here, in Gaucín, you will enjoy the pretty streets and traditional buildings, spectacular views and a good selection of restaurants and bars. The owners recommend that you try the tapas at Paco Pepe's bar just a couple of streets away. Climb up to the castle and pick figs in the ruins with the eagles soaring high overhead!

The village has its own pool (open in July and August) and tennis court. All the facilities you will need too - small shops, a chemist, banks etc.

And, as everywhere in Andalucía, more than its fair share of fiestas, traditional Saints days and processions, each an excuse for merrymaking and dancing.

Stroll into the surrounding countryside to enjoy the beautiful views and the profusion of wild flowers in Spring. There are spectacular cork forests with picnic areas, rock pools where you can swim, or you can dine beside tumbling streams in renowned restaurants.

A beautiful 45 minute drive will take you across the mountains to Ronda, brimming with history and interest. Heading south to the coast, you can take a boat trip to Tangiers in North Africa, or just to see the dolphins playing in the Straits of Gibraltar. Other scenic drives will take you to Sevilla, Jerez or Cadiz.

All marvellous places to visit. And, at the end of a lovely day out, a delightful home to return to, one with bags of character, charm and style.

Around and About

This is an excellent base from which to explore this delightful and very beautiful part of Andalucía.

Excursions

  • La Costa del Sol with its wealth of sandy beaches, sun, fun and nightlife is just 30 minutes away. Resort towns include Estepona (45 minutes) and glitzy, glamorous Marbella (under an hour).
  • Gibraltar, steeped in history, VAT free shops … and plenty of fish & chips is 1¼ hours away.
  • Tarifa on the southernmost point of Spain is 1½ hours from here. Looking directly across the Straits of Gibraltar to Morocco, Africa is so close you feel that you can almost touch it!
  • Beyond lie mile upon mile of magnificent white beaches on Spain's Atlantic coast, La Costa de la Luz.
  • A taste of Morocco perhaps? The fast boat from Tarifa to Tangiers takes 35 minutes, so you can be exploring the local souks in just a few hours. Fascinating and colourful, it really is a different world.
  • Spain's unique sherry wine region (Jerez and Sanlúcar), is well worth a visit, enhanced no doubt by stopping at one or two of the famous bodegas along the way! Jerez de la Frontera is 2 hours.
  • Cádiz (2¼ hours) continues to evoke the romance, intrigue and mystery of centuries of trade (some legal, some not so) between Europe, Africa and the Americas.
  • One of Europe's most important wetland reserves and bird sanctuaries, the Doñana National Park, is a popular attraction for nature lovers (4 hours). Its enormous variety of bird species include everything from flamingos to imperial eagles.
  • A beautiful road winds over the spectacular mountains to Ronda (45 minutes), with its spectacular gorge and Spain's oldest bullring, Hemmingway’s favourite town in all of Spain.
  • Sevilla takes 2½ hours. It is impossible not to be captivated by its exuberant atmosphere: stylish, confident, ancient and proud, yet also convivial, intimate and fun-loving. If you don't know what alegría means, Sevilla is the place to learn!
  • The fantastic railway between Algeciras on the coast and Ronda, to the north, stops at the little pueblo of Colmenar (20 minutes away). One of Europe’s great short railway journeys, running through landscapes which offer constantly plunging and spectacular views, this is a remarkable and wonderful way to see some of Andalucía's best and most dramatic countryside.
  • There are a plethora of beautiful white villages and hilltop towns to explore and enjoy in the magnificent countryside of the Serranía de Ronda – Jimena de la Frontera, Casares and Genalguacil to name but a few.
  • Nearby National Parks include the fabulous Los Alcornocales Natural Park and the Grazalema National Park, one of the most beautiful tracks of mountain anywhere in Europe. Jagged peaks, gorges, chasms, faults and caves, underground rivers and deep canyons are interspersed, here and there, by some of the prettiest villages in Spain, Grazalema, Zahara, Setenil and the other famous "pueblos blancos".
  • Córdoba and Granada are both 3 hours drive from here

Activities

  • Guided and self-guided walking, horse riding, mountain biking and yoga are all available in or around Gaucín.
  • The village has an excellent municipal swimming pool, a tennis court and gymnasium.
