Villa Description

Rustic charm

Not least of the fascinations of this rambling old house is that it takes a good half hour to work out exactly where you are!

This rambling old house, right in the heart of picturesque Gaucín village, has been renovated with flair and imagination. A house of great character and real, rustic charm, it is warm and welcoming, full of interest and pleasant surprises.

On three floors there are lots of stairs which take you in, out and all over the place! Not least of it's fascinations is that it takes a good half hour to work out exactly where you are!

This is no conventional "two up, two down" property; stairways (some internal, some external) and passageways interconnect the floors and rooms in a way that, although initially mystifying, is a large part of its special charm.

Rustic decoration and furnishings (with a strong Moorish influence) enhance its casually comfortable authenticity.

Stunning views

On a clear day the Rif Mountains of North Africa can be seen across the shimmering sea.

Because of its many steps and terraces, we don't consider the property suitable for young children or anyone with wobbly legs. Babies are welcome but it's not the right choice for toddlers or youngsters. There are three bedrooms (one double, one twin and one single) but the house is best suited, we think, for a maximum of four guests.

Let's start on the top floor … this is where the spacious living room is. Light and airy, it's cosy and colourful, a room made to relax in. Double doors open to a roof terrace with stunning views over the village rooftops, across unspoiled countryside and down to the Med.

On a clear day the Rif Mountains of North Africa can be seen across the shimmering sea! The terrace has teak patio furniture and a cane awning for shade.

The master (double) bedroom, with en-suite bathroom (bathtub only, no shower) is also on this floor.

All very "Andaluz"

Full of pleasant surprises and with a strong Moorish influence, the ambience is delightfully casual.

The second bedroom, a pretty twin (the beds are pushed together) is on the floor below. Its en-suite bathroom features an enormous, Moroccan-style bath tub. With windows on both sides, it looks out over the garden and pool from its balcony.

A hallway leads through to a well equipped galley kitchen (electric oven, five ring hob, microwave, dishwasher etc) with room for a small breakfast table in front of a glass fronted wood burner. Doors open to steps which descend down through an internal patio, full of lovely plants, to the garden and pool. It's all very "Andaluz".

Along from the kitchen, passing a cloakroom / shower room (decorated in Moorish style), the hallway leads to the reception / dining room at the front of the house. Another comfortable and spacious room with a wood-burning stove and large refectory dining table, it's at ground floor level on this side of the house.

A welcoming little pool

The garden is an attractive and very private space where you can sunbathe, dine al fresco, or read under the shaded alcove.

At the back of the house there's a lower floor at garden level.

A third (single) bedroom is on this floor, tucked away behind the pool alcove, which can be accessed by the external patio steps from the kitchen above, or directly from the garden alcove. There's a wash basin in the room but please note that there's no bathroom on this floor.

The high walled garden is a delight! Despite being in the centre of the village it's not overlooked. An attractive and very private space, here you can sunbathe, dine al fresco, or read under the shaded alcove. There's a barbecue and fridge, wooden garden furniture, plenty of plants and greenery, and a welcoming little pool (5 m x 2.5 m) with roman steps.

A gate opens to the traffic-free side street alongside the house.

From here, of course, it's just a short stroll to Gaucín's many excellent bars and restaurants. One of the classic white villages of Andalucía, it is spectacularly situated in the mountains behind the Costa del Sol in the Serrania de Ronda. There are fabulous views at every turn. Its narrow streets house four little grocery shops and a traditional butcher, an organic food shop, banks (cash points) and a pharmacy.

The mountain countryside of the Natural Parks which surround Gaucín is ideal for walkers, bird watchers and nature lovers; there are lots of fascinating little villages and hilltop towns to explore.

A drive north over the spectacular mountain road will quickly bring you to Ronda with its spectacular gorge and Spain's oldest bullring. The Mediterranean's Costa del Sol is just 30 minutes away.

Around and About

This is an excellent base from which to explore this delightful and very beautiful part of Andalucía.

  • La Costa del Sol with its wealth of sandy beaches, sun, fun and nightlife is just 30 minutes away. Resort towns include Estepona (45 minutes) and glitzy, glamorous Marbella (under an hour).
  • Gibraltar, steeped in history, VAT free shops … and plenty of fish & chips is 1¼ hours away.
  • Tarifa on the southernmost point of Spain is 1½ hours from here. Looking directly across the Straits of Gibraltar to Morocco, Africa is so close you feel that you can almost touch it!
  • Beyond lie mile upon mile of magnificent white beaches on Spain's Atlantic coast, La Costa de la Luz.
  • A taste of Morocco perhaps? The fast boat from Tarifa to Tangiers takes 35 minutes, so you can be exploring the local souks in just a few hours. Fascinating and colourful, it really is a different world.
  • Spain's unique sherry wine region (Jerez and Sanlúcar), is well worth a visit, enhanced no doubt by stopping at one or two of the famous bodegas along the way! Jerez de la Frontera is 2 hours.
  • Cádiz (2¼ hours) continues to evoke the romance, intrigue and mystery of centuries of trade (some legal, some not so) between Europe, Africa and the Americas.
  • One of Europe's most important wetland reserves and bird sanctuaries, the Doñana National Park, is a popular attraction for nature lovers (4 hours). Its enormous variety of bird species include everything from flamingos to imperial eagles.
  • A beautiful road winds over the spectacular mountains to Ronda (45 minutes), with its spectacular gorge and Spain's oldest bullring, Hemmingway’s favourite town in all of Spain.
  • Sevilla takes 2½ hours. It is impossible not to be captivated by its exuberant atmosphere: stylish, confident, ancient and proud, yet also convivial, intimate and fun-loving. If you don't know what alegría means, Sevilla is the place to learn!
  • The fantastic railway between Algeciras on the coast and Ronda, to the north, stops at the little pueblo of Colmenar (20 minutes away). One of Europe’s great short railway journeys, running through landscapes which offer constantly plunging and spectacular views, this is a remarkable and wonderful way to see some of Andalucía's best and most dramatic countryside.
  • There are a plethora of beautiful white villages and hilltop towns to explore and enjoy in the magnificent countryside of the Serranía de Ronda – Jimena de la Frontera, Casares and Genalguacil to name but a few.
  • Nearby National Parks include the fabulous Los Alcornocales Natural Park and the Grazalema National Park, one of the most beautiful tracks of mountain anywhere in Europe. Jagged peaks, gorges, chasms, faults and caves, underground rivers and deep canyons are interspersed, here and there, by some of the prettiest villages in Spain, Grazalema, Zahara, Setenil and the other famous "pueblos blancos".
  • Córdoba and Granada are both 3 hours drive from here

  • Guided and self-guided walking, horse riding, mountain biking and yoga are all available in or around Gaucín.
  • The village has an excellent municipal swimming pool, a tennis court and gymnasium.
  • For golf enthusiasts, there are at least 25 top quality golf courses (including Finca Cortesin, Valderrama, Sotogrande, and San Roque) within 50 minutes drive.
  • On the coast (both the Costa del Sol and the Costa de la Luz) there’s every beach pursuit imaginable, from sailing and windsurfing, diving and snorkelling to whale and dolphin watching.
