Villa Description

Glorious countryside

On a 70 acre private estate within the superb natural beauty of the Alcornocales National Park, all around are hillsides of wild flowers, oak and olive trees.

This two bedroomed country cottage (and its adjoining annexe with two more bedrooms) is set deep in some of the most glorious countryside to be found anywhere in Andalucía.

On a 70 acre private estate within the superb natural beauty of the Alcornocales National Park, all around are hillsides of wild flowers, oak and olive trees.

There are a few other properties on this vast estate (the main farmhouse and a couple of other little cottages) but nothing disturbs the glorious seclusion of this one. There is plenty of countryside and acres of space for all.

Easily accessible, it is just four kilometres from pretty Gaucín village, less than an hour's drive from Gibraltar Airport and 75 minutes from Málaga Airport. A little country road winds gently down from the village to El Colmenar in the valley below and a short farm track (in excellent condition) leads off from this road and takes you directly to the cottage, which is hidden away amid verdant greenery on a lower terrace. There's private parking to the side.

Tasteful and colourful

Inside, it's both pretty and functional, tastefully furnished and well equipped. There's a genuine country cottage feel.

Inside, it's both pretty and functional. At one end, the spacious living room is cosy and restful, with sofas and an armchair neatly gathered around the fireplace under its wood-beamed ceiling. It's tasteful and colourful with a genuine country cottage feel. There is central heating throughout.

The living room opens through to the dining the kitchen area. On one side the dining table comfortably seats twelve and is separated off from the kitchen by a bar top. It's well equipped with an electric oven, a four ring gas hob, dishwasher and a fridge. The freezer is just outside, on the terrace.

From here, a corridor leads through to a laundry / utility room, a bathroom and, on the opposite side to the two spacious bedrooms. The master double bedroom (with en-suite bathroom) and a twin bedded room both have doors which open to the terrace outside. As elsewhere in the cottage, whitewashed walls and terracotta floor tiles keep everything cool and serene in summer.

As good as it gets

A great place at any time of day, it becomes completely perfect with a cold glass of something refreshing close to hand!

You will wake up to a marvellous panoramic view which extends across afforested mountains and over rolling valleys, down to the Rock of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean beyond. Morocco is often clearly visible across the shimmering sea.

The other two (smaller) bedrooms are in the annexe just a few feet away from the cottage. They are both twin bedded and both have prettily tiled, en-suite shower rooms.

A terrace runs along the entire front of the cottage, part shaded and part open to the sun. Here you can relax in comfort and take in the magnificent south facing views. A great place at any time of day, it becomes completely perfect with a cold glass of something refreshing close to hand!

To the side of the terrace is the little pool, egg-shaped, approx. 4 m x 3 m, 1.5 m deep and its surrounding bathing terrace. The estate grounds beyond are filled with mature trees, marguerites, cape daisies, lavender and honeysuckle. With the Andalusian sun shining brightly overhead, this is as good as it gets!

Peace and tranquillity

Hidden away amid verdant greenery, all around are mature trees, marguerites, cape daisies, lavender and honeysuckle.

Beyond, there are fields and orchards, olive and oak forests to explore. The estate grounds include an all weather tennis court which guests can use (it's shared with a couple of the other properties on the estate).

Gaucín is one of Spain's most beautiful pueblos blancos, spectacularly situated on a mountain ridge, 629 meters above sea level in the mountains behind the Costa del Sol. There are fabulous views at every turn. With a population of 2,000, its narrow streets house four supermarkets and a traditional butcher, an organic food shop, banks (cash points) and a pharmacy. There are a variety of small restaurants and tapas bars.

The mountain countryside of the Natural Parks which surround Gaucín is ideal for walkers, bird watchers and nature lovers and there are lots of fascinating little villages and hilltop towns to explore. A drive north over the spectacular mountain road will quickly bring you to Ronda with its spectacular gorge and Spain's oldest bullring. The Mediterranean's Costa del Sol is just 30 minutes away, the beautiful beaches of La Costa de la Luz a little further, a 90-minute drive from here.

A haven of peace and tranquillity, it is a stunning setting, one of the very best in all Spain.

Around and About

This is an excellent base from which to explore this delightful and very beautiful part of Andalucía.

  • La Costa del Sol with its wealth of sandy beaches, sun, fun and nightlife is just 30 minutes away. Resort towns include Estepona (45 minutes) and glitzy, glamorous Marbella (under an hour).
  • Gibraltar, steeped in history, VAT free shops … and plenty of fish & chips is 1¼ hours away.
  • Tarifa on the southernmost point of Spain is 1½ hours from here. Looking directly across the Straits of Gibraltar to Morocco, Africa is so close you feel that you can almost touch it!
  • Beyond lie mile upon mile of magnificent white beaches on Spain's Atlantic coast, La Costa de la Luz.
  • A taste of Morocco perhaps? The fast boat from Tarifa to Tangiers takes 35 minutes, so you can be exploring the local souks in just a few hours. Fascinating and colourful, it really is a different world.
  • Spain's unique sherry wine region (Jerez and Sanlúcar), is well worth a visit, enhanced no doubt by stopping at one or two of the famous bodegas along the way! Jerez de la Frontera is 2 hours.
  • Cádiz (2¼ hours) continues to evoke the romance, intrigue and mystery of centuries of trade (some legal, some not so) between Europe, Africa and the Americas.
  • One of Europe's most important wetland reserves and bird sanctuaries, the Doñana National Park, is a popular attraction for nature lovers (4 hours). Its enormous variety of bird species include everything from flamingos to imperial eagles.
  • A beautiful road winds over the spectacular mountains to Ronda (45 minutes), with its spectacular gorge and Spain's oldest bullring, Hemmingway’s favourite town in all of Spain.
  • Sevilla takes 2½ hours. It is impossible not to be captivated by its exuberant atmosphere: stylish, confident, ancient and proud, yet also convivial, intimate and fun-loving. If you don't know what alegría means, Sevilla is the place to learn!
  • The fantastic railway between Algeciras on the coast and Ronda, to the north, stops at the little pueblo of Colmenar (20 minutes away). One of Europe’s great short railway journeys, running through landscapes which offer constantly plunging and spectacular views, this is a remarkable and wonderful way to see some of Andalucía's best and most dramatic countryside.
  • There are a plethora of beautiful white villages and hilltop towns to explore and enjoy in the magnificent countryside of the Serranía de Ronda – Jimena de la Frontera, Casares and Genalguacil to name but a few.
  • Nearby National Parks include the fabulous Los Alcornocales Natural Park and the Grazalema National Park, one of the most beautiful tracks of mountain anywhere in Europe. Jagged peaks, gorges, chasms, faults and caves, underground rivers and deep canyons are interspersed, here and there, by some of the prettiest villages in Spain, Grazalema, Zahara, Setenil and the other famous "pueblos blancos".
  • Córdoba and Granada are both 3 hours drive from here

  • Guided and self-guided walking, horse riding, mountain biking and yoga are all available in or around Gaucín.
  • The village has an excellent municipal swimming pool, a tennis court and gymnasium.
  • For golf enthusiasts, there are at least 25 top quality golf courses (including Finca Cortesin, Valderrama, Sotogrande, and San Roque) within 50 minutes drive.
  • On the coast (both the Costa del Sol and the Costa de la Luz) there’s every beach pursuit imaginable, from sailing and windsurfing, diving and snorkelling to whale and dolphin watching.
