We love Andalucia and have visited many times but this has been our favourite place to stay by far! The perfect mix of exploring and relaxing, table tennis and the trampoline were a real hit and the barbecue was fired up most nights as we ate outside admiring the fabulous views. The house itself was large and rambling which provided plenty of space for us all and the reviews are right - very comfy beds. We all loved it! The owner was the perfect hostess - just there when you needed her. Thank you so much for such a lovely holiday."

The children have plenty of things to keep them occupied, chickens, walks, trampoline, tree house, table tennis along with the requisite pool and sunshine! A real home from home and extremely comfortable and a bonus, good quality cotton sheets! I really am transfixed with the views each time we have stayed and the gorgeous countryside. Although located in the countryside, waving to the goat herder each evening and watching the sunrise over the mountains, the village is not too far away.The owner was very helpful which made our stay even more enjoyable. With five adults, 3 children and 1 infant their is plenty to do and fun to be had. The kids loved the pool and playing table tennis for hours plus adventuring amongst the olive trees. An excellent and handy location with stunning views. We had the best time and our host was friendly and helpful. Villa Description

Character and comfort

"We were amazed by the views, so relaxing and the children never stopped swimming. the play area was definitely a bonus. Great holiday".

This is a lovely old farmhouse, high in the hills with spectacular scenery as far as the eye can see. Overlooking the valley below, across white-washed villages in the distance, the joyous scenery stretches to the Tejeda mountain range on the horizon.

It's a very relaxing, completely rural spot, a place where you will feel totally at peace with the rest of the world.

The farmhouse has been a family home for many years and has been lovingly restored with its original features carefully retained. Most rooms have traditional beamed ceilings, many with terracotta floor tiles, open fireplaces or wood-burning stoves, decorative wrought iron lights and beautiful wooden doors.

'Modern' and 'comfort' have been carefully introduced too. Tradition has been beautifully augmented by quality furnishings and matching decorations.

Ideally situated

"A superb location indeed, the house had everything we needed, pure relaxation and Old Malaga was delightful. The village festival was fabulous too".

It all adds up to a really lovely place to stay, a real home-from-home in an outstandingly beautiful part of Andalucía.

Five minutes drive from the pretty white village of Colmenar, through olive and almond covered hillsides brings us to the farmhouse which is accessed by a 300 metre track (in excellent condition) which winds down the hillside to the villa, gleaming white and bright in the Andalusian sunshine, as pretty as a picture in its blissful countryside location.

There is extensive private parking at the front of the property. Wrought iron gates from the entrance terrace open on to a spacious, partially covered patio. Bordered by colourful flowers and plants, it is a delightful spot to sit and relax, contemplating the fantastic views which spread out all around.

Here, a traditional wooden door opens to the terrace which wraps right around the farmhouse.

Stunning views

"We have really enjoyed our stay, just what we needed, plenty of sunshine, relaxing, very peaceful and what great views!"

One enters to a fully equipped country kitchen, with a big wooden table and chairs at its centre. It's a lovely room, beautifully decorated, with some very attractive features which include a fantastic, antique cast-iron wood burner which will keep everything warm and toasty in the middle of winter. There's a flat screen TV too.

Doors at each end of the room open to the pretty, flower-filled patios and terraces outside. A bathroom leads off, with a shower over the bath tub.

The kitchen also interconnects with the other living areas: a huge lounge with a cast iron wood burner, two Oakland Fairfax sprung edged sofas, a recliner, air conditioning and four metres of picture windows which make the very best of the magnificent countryside views, as well as a second comfy and relaxing sitting room with an antique wood burner and air conditioning.

There is a stereo system, a 42" flat screen satellite TV (Free-to-view) and DVD plus a good selection of books, board games and DVD's to choose from. There is Playstaion 2 and direct internet access as well as WiFi.

The sitting room leads through to a very attractive dining room. Here quality antique furnishings and beautifully polished wood predominates. As elsewhere in the house, there are original paintings, photos and prints on the walls.

At the far end of this ground floor is one of the bedrooms (Nº 4), twin bedded, which enjoys a fabulous view of the mountain scenery all around, the little village of Periana glinting white in the distance. Built under the eaves of the house, this is a really cool room so no air conditioning is necessary here. Note however that there's no bathroom in its immediate vicinity; the nearest one is on the other side of the kitchen.

A large staircase leads up to the three other bedrooms (all with air conditioning / heating units).

A twin bedroom (Nº 2, with balcony views through double doors to the olive covered hillsides) and a double bedroom (Nº 3, with views over the pool terrace, 22" flat screen TV and DVD), share a shower room between them.

The master double bedroom (Nº 1) also makes the best of the wonderful views with windows on two sides of the room. This big, spacious bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom with a shower over the bath tub as well as a walk-in shower.

A laundry room (accessed from outside) houses two washing machines and a tumble drier. These are shared with two other holiday cottages nearby, one built on the terrace below the farmhouse, the other sixty metres further up the lane. Neither of them overlooks this one and there's plenty of room for all!

Serene beauty

"We still talk about the goats passing in the evenings, the beautiful skies at night, the view of those tiny villages, amazing".

Doors lead out from various parts of the farmhouse to the rear and side patios and also to the gorgeous suntrap which is the pool area.

A vast and varied profusion of flowers add more joy and colour: roses, marguerites, honeysuckle, jasmine, hibiscus, lavender, geranium, orchids and bougainvillea (to name but a few) spill out from under trees of willow, orange, lemon, plum, almond, olive, palm, pomegranate, fig and yucca.

There is both welcome shade and plenty of room to sunbathe too, by the inviting swimming pool (7 m x 3.5 m), which also offers unrivalled views across the valleys.

A barbecue and a covered dining terrace are the perfect complements to enable you to enjoy a relaxing meal amidst all this greenery and serene natural beauty.

A lovely home

The character of a previous era blends gracefully with modern comforts. Beautiful views and an unchanging peace will be your constant companions.

Lastly, but not least, there is a large play area for children between the parking area and the small chicken coop. This includes a tree house (with a slide) under a large holm oak tree, a bouncy trampoline (with a protective netting surround), swings, a basket ball net and table tennis. This area should be used under adult supervision at all times. A large toy box can also be provided on request for younger children.

Locally, outdoor activities include birdwatching (especially in spring), cycling, horse riding and walking. Málaga is just three quarters of an hour away and other Mediterranean resorts such as Nerja and Torre del Mar are even closer with their marinas, restaurants and beautiful beaches. Exclusive golf clubs are also within easy reach.

Inland there are pretty villages to explore with their authentic Andalusian character, the timeless countryside of La Axarquía - with it's beautiful lake, La Viñuela as it's centrepiece - and the dramatic mountain terrain of the Montes de Málaga. It is also ideally situated to explore many of Andalucia's great historic and cultural centres, including Ronda, Granada and Córdoba.

Wherever you go, you will be happy to return here, where the character and atmosphere of a previous era blends gracefully with the comfort of modern conveniences. Beautiful views and an unchanging peace will be your constant companions.

Weather permitting, the swimming pool will be open throughout the year (although, because it's not heated, the normal swimming season is from late April to September, inclusive)

Rentals for this property normally run from Saturday to Saturday in high season

The property and grounds are not all on one level so would not be suitable for a wheel chair or for the very elderly. There are small steps connecting some rooms and one or two low door frames

A weekly change of linen and towels is included for rentals of more than one week

Starter packs can be provided (on request) for your arrival eg. milk, local cheese and wines, bread etc (payable locally)

A large toy box can be provided (on request for younger children)

Around and About

This is an excellent base from which to explore this delightful and very beautiful part of Andalucía.


  • The local village of Colmenar is only 4½ km from the cottage. With a population of just over 3,000 it is largely untouched by the commercial tourism of the coast and continues a traditional rural way of life where the olive, almond and grape harvests are an important part of the social calendar.
  • That said, Colmenar can be a lively place at times (when the local fiestas are in full swing) and there is a good range of bars, shops and restaurants all of which are very welcoming.
  • Immediately beyond Colmenar, take the wonderful road through Las Montes de Málaga which winds through the forested hillsides down to the coast. Remote and peaceful, it's a gentle, hilly area criss-crossed by streams which have carved small valleys, extensively planted with pine trees and ancient Mediterranean species too, holm oak, corks and carib trees, making it an ideal habitat for the chameleons and other protected species of wildlife and birds of prey which reside here. The lovely scenery, and some great views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea below, can also be enjoyed on any one of numerous walking routes through the Park.
  • You are also well placed to visit the dramatic Sierra de Torcal (to the south of Antequera), a massive, Mars-like mountain of heavily eroded rock formations. The imagination plays tricks as giants, monsters and castles seem to appear before your eyes.
  • Lake Vinuela is a man-made lake but none the less spectacular and picturesque for this. Its azure-blue waters are surrounded by rolling hills and a number of delightful villages including Canillas de Aceituno, Alcaucin, Periana and Riogordo. Close by, the villages of Comares, Competa and Benamargosa are equally charming.
  • Torre del Mar is the closest seaside resort and boasts one of the longest, and certainly one of the widest, beaches on the coast. It is very Spanish in character although, as with most places these days, you will find quite an eclectic mix of bars and restaurants. There is excellent fresh fish and seafood to be enjoyed, chiringuitos (beach bars) and other watering holes. For the young at heart, there's plenty of night-long, night life too.
  • Nerja is a little further east along the coast. Much more "international" with a strong British presence (you can have a curry here ... ) it boasts 16 kilometres of beaches with powdery sand and sparkling clear water.
  • The heart of Nerja is its spectacular Balcón de Europa, a magnificent promenade along the edge of a towering cliff, with sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the small coves and beaches below, against an awesome backdrop of hazy blue mountains.
  • However, Nerja's most spectacular attraction is undoubtedly its magnificent caves - a series of huge caverns stretching for almost five kilometres and home to the world’s largest stalagmite, a 32 metre high column measuring 13 metres by 7 metres at its base. Located three kilometres out of town there are archaeological treasures galore including paintings over 20,000 years old and other pre-historic remains.
  • One of the enormous natural caverns has been transformed into a concert hall, where many fabulous performances (classical and flamenco) are staged during the summer. The International Festival of Music and Dance takes place in mid July each year.
  • Just inland from Torre del Mar is Vélez-Málaga, capital of La Axarquía. It is the centre of an agricultural region known for its strawberries and vineyards, which produce the muscatel grapes from which the famous Málaga wines are made.
  • If you are here on a Thursday, take time to wander around its weekly market, always an enjoyable experience. The 13th Century Moorish castle and the lovely old town are also worth visiting.
  • A great day out and a favourite with many of our guests is the Water Park at Velez Malaga.
  • Granada is, of course, a must-see city. Soaring high above is the spectacular back drop of the snow-covered Sierra Nevada mountains. And what a city lies below, a city of classical beauty, the jewel in the Spanish Crown.
  • The mesmerising Alhambra Palace and its exquisite gardens, one of the world's greatest wonders; the narrow, cobbled streets and beautiful walled gardens of the ancient Arab quarter, El Albaicín; the magnificent Cathedral, just one of many superb examples of Renaissance architecture; the caves of Sacramonte, nostalgic legacy of the gypsies.
  • A city which inspired García Lorca, Andalucía's finest poet, it is, above all, a people's city, full of life and colour, energy and fun.
  • Antequera and, further a field, both Sevilla and Córdoba are accessable too. From Colmenar it's only a short 10 minute drive to the motorway network which links all the great cities of Andalucía.


  • There are many sporting activities on offer including horse riding, golf, hang gliding and walking. In the main these activities are offered by enterprising Brit's and other Europeans who have settled in the area.
  • Both Las Montes de Málaga and, to the east, La Sierra de Tejeda (which rises up above 2,000 metres), offer a wealth of wonderful nature and walking possibilities. Superb hiking country, the numerous steep crags of Tejeda also make it ideal for aspiring rock climbers.
  • Sailing and a variety of other watersports are available at the fishing port and marina, La Caleta de Velez. All major water sports are also available in Nerja including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing.
  • For golf enthusiasts, there are several excellent golf courses to choose from. Many speak highly of the course at Antequera (an hour away).
