Property Description
Situated just outside the little market town of Órgiva, this country property is an oasis of tranquility and seclusion. Set in half an acre of gardens and orchards in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains with wonderful views of the Sierra Lujar, it's a lovely place to be.
Surrounded by glorious nature it's a haven for those wishing to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
But it's also very handy for getting into town. An easy, 20 minute stroll will take you to Órgiva, a bustling little market town with an eclectic, cosmopolitan ambience all its very own. Relaxing at one of the tapas bars in the main plaza, watching the world go by, is always an enjoyable conclusion to a shopping trip. All the more so on Thursday's when the thriving morning market is the excuse for many locals to go into town to meet up with friends.
If you prefer to spend your time doing very little, dipping in and out of the pool, perhaps enjoying a well earned siesta … this rural property is equally ideal.
Located just off a farm track which runs along the side of a tiny river (usually dry in summer) here you are deep in the Alpujarran countryside. It's a delightful spot, its lush garden a real delight, bursting with colour and the heavy scent of orange trees. The owners (an English couple) live here for much of the year and they are both keen gardeners. You will enjoy the result of their labours!
Beyond the garden (with the swimming pool centre stage) and barbecue area there are very attractive orchards too, perfect places to relax for an hour or two, enjoying the countryside peace and tranquility under the shade of your chosen tree, no doubt with a good book to hand.
Practically designed and cheerfully furnished, the house has everything you will need for your holiday. There's private parking immediately inside the property gates with space for a couple of cars. The main accommodation is all on one floor, a compact space which comprises three bedrooms, a bathroom, living room and kitchen leading off from a short corridor.
The living room opens through French windows to a sun terrace which runs the length of the property, overlooking the garden and pool below. Views over the countryside from here are fabulous.
There is more (shaded) terrace space on the floor below, in front of the pool (7m x 4m) and the landscaped gardens, perfect for eating al fresco whilst escaping the strong Spanish sun.
There is also an extensive BBQ area to the side of the house with a wooden dining table and chairs.
Comfortably and cheerfully furnished throughout, there's satellite TV (Freeview, so you will receive the main terrestrial British stations, BBC, ITV etc), DVD and WiFi internet connection. The recently refurbished kitchen isn't big but nevertheless is decently equipped with an electric oven, 4-ring gas hob, microwave, fridge/freezer and washing machine as well as all the usual bits and pieces. The bathroom has a shower over the bath tub.
For larger groups (eight guests) we also offer the self-contained apartment on the floor below (this will be closed for smaller groups).
It has a light and airy, open-plan kitchen/sitting room (with french doors which lead out to the shady pool terrace).
Also with two sofas and rustic wood furniture, a TV and DVD, it opens through to an American style kitchen area (equipped with an electric oven, gas hob, fridge, kettle, juicer, toaster and microwave). A tiled en-suite shower room leads off from the twin bedroom, which also has access straight onto the terrace so, if you wish, you can just roll out of your bed and head straight for the pool!
If you get tired of simply relaxing, there is so much to enjoy in the surrounding area that you certainly won't have time to see it all. Órgiva, set in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada in the wide valley of the Rio Guadalfeo, is effectively "the capital" of Las Alpujarras.
Views are superb, with the often snow capped peaks of Sierra Nevada to the north and the graceful curves of Sierra Lújar dominating the horizon to the south.
It's an excellent base for discovering the essence of Las Alpujarras. The countryside all around, in the fertile Vale de Órgiva, is beautiful. Swathes of orange and lemon trees, olives and pomegranates, bougainvillea, morning glory and jasmine bring joy to a sunny land. Surrounded by mountains, it's a rural paradise.
It's also a natural crossroads : four roads depart from here, one linking Las Alpujarras with Salobreña and the Costa Tropical to the south; another heads west, through Lanjarón, leading on to Granada.
A third one, through Torvizcón, takes one through the foothills of the Contraviesa into the remoter villages of the Eastern Alpujarras; the fourth winds up into the Sierra Nevada, ascending to Pampaneira, Bubión, Capileira, Trevélez and the other classical Moorish villages in the high mountains.
A day trip up the mountains to the high Alpujarran white villages is a must. Just 25 minutes away by car it feels like you have stepped back in time. The Moorish architecture with its flat roofs and charming, protruding chimney pots (which look like old men wearing jaunty hats) characterise the buildings in this area.
Whether your passion is walking, climbing, horse riding, bird watching or just simply enjoying the fabulous views which stretch all the way to the sea, here you can do them all.
A little further afield, the beach resorts of Salobrena, Almunecar and La Herradura on the Costa Tropical are no more than half an hour's drive away. The golden, sandy beaches of Nerja are just a little further on.
In the other direction, passing through the spa resort village of Lanjarón, the country road will quickly take you on to the motorway which will speed you on to majestic Granada, just 40 minutes away by car.
If home cooking is not for you there are several restaurants in and around Órgiva and a plethora of authentic ventas and bars serving local fare within five minutes drive of the villa.
You can ski in the Sierra Nevada (90 minutes away) under the bluest of sky's you will ever see. There's horse riding and a thousand wonderful walking trails.
Or, if you prefer, just relax under your favourite olive tree or take a long snooze between dips in the pool. Pick a lemon from a tree for your gin and tonic, an essential accompaniment for later as you watch the sun go down over the mountains.
