Property Description
This lovely rustic cottage nestles at the foot of the Moorish village of Bubión, with uninterrupted views down the whole sweep of the magnificent Poqueira Valley.
This is the oldest part of the little mountain 'pueblo' and, with its narrow cobbled streets, stone walls and traditional architecture one is transported back to the Spain of days long gone by.
Although alongside another house, it nevertheless enjoys a great sense of privacy with the beauty and tranquility of the Alpujarran countryside all around. Surrounded by a vegetable garden, a little stream and the ancient path that winds its way down to Pampaneira, this is a magical place.
The house is now a protected building, an excellent example of the traditional architecture of La Alpujarra. Built entirely in stone by the Berbers who settled these villages long ago, it is at least six hundred years old and stands on a natural foundation of rock. The floors are laid with handmade mud tiles and the ceilings are chestnut beamed in the typical Alpujaran way.
It's ideal for outdoor living, too, with several stone terraces (one of them 20 m2) on different levels, all of them offering great countryside views. An old fig tree not only bears delicious fruit but also forms a natural canopy of shade in summer months.
The advantages of being at the bottom of the village are immediately evident - no traffic, countryside all around and uninterrupted views of the beautiful Poqueira Ravine which extend to the Mediterranean Sea.
The only disadvantage is that it's a bit of a climb up to the top of the village where the shops, bars and restaurants are located. Mind you, because you can usually park by the village square, just a hundred metres from the house, you can drive up if you are feeling lazy!
It's cosy in winter, with an open fireplace and a wood burning stove to augment the central heating. On clear days in the colder months one can see the Rif mountains of Morocco rising up across the shimmering Mediterranean Sea.
A real home, it's a wonderfully rustic and comfortable abode. A couple who stayed here wrote "just wanted to say many thanks for a wonderful holiday. The cottage was perfect for us, the walking was fabulous and we totally fell in love with Las Alpujarras".
