Property Description
The small town of Órgiva turns into countryside just a lemon's throw from the market square. Here, albeit close to town, this little cottage and its lovely gardens are private and tranquil, hidden away behind trees down a short, gravel drive.
Built in traditional style with tiled floors and beamed ceilings inside, and very neatly and comfortably furnished, it also has an attractive porch and terrace outside as well as the lawned and colourfully planted garden and pool. Flanking, and belonging to the property, is an olive grove with trees of tremendous age.
The cottage is sunny and modern, a simple but comfortable, pretty holiday home. Enjoying Órgiva's delightful microclimate, it is especially inviting to spend days and evenings outdoors, lounging by and taking dips in the lovely, good-sized swimming pool.
All on one floor, there is a comfortable lounge / diner which opens through glass doors to the shaded terrace and gardens beyond. It is separated from the kitchen by a bar counter. The two bedrooms and the bathroom (shower over bath tub) lead off. The living room and the double bedroom have air conditioning; and there's WiFi internet connection.
Being on the edge of town it enjoys the best of both world's, in the countryside yet just a few minutes walk to tapas bars, shops and restaurants. It's very handy for Órgiva's Thursday morning market too, a thriving affair and an excuse for many locals to go into town to meet up with friends. Definitely worth a visit.
Located on the southern slopes of the Natural Park of Sierra Nevada, in the wide valley of the Rio Guadalfeo, it is effectively "the capital" of Las Alpujarras. Views are superb, with the often snow capped peaks of Sierra Nevada to the north and the graceful curves of Sierra Lújar dominating the horizon to the south.
It's an excellent base for discovering the essence of Las Alpujarras. The countryside all around, in the fertile Vale de Órgiva, is beautiful. Swathes of orange and lemon trees, olives and pomegranates, bougainvillea, morning glory and jasmine bring joy to a sunny land. Surrounded by mountains, it's a rural paradise.
It's also a natural crossroads : four roads depart from here, one linking Las Alpujarras with Salobreña and the Costa Tropical to the south; another heads west, through Lanjarón, leading on to Granada.
A third one, through Torvizcón, takes one through the foothills of the Contraviesa into the remoter villages of the Eastern Alpujarras; the fourth winds up into the Sierra Nevada, ascending to Pampaneira, Bubión, Capileira, Trevélez and the other classical Moorish villages in the high mountains.
Both the magical city of Granada and the beaches of the Costa Tropical are within easy driving distance for day trips, both less than 45 minutes away.
Or stay within the wonderful mountain world of Las Alpujarras and discover the eight centuries of Moorish heritage in the traditional, white-washed mountain villages and their flourishing local craftwork (hand woven carpets, textiles and wicker-work), not to mention the regions' cuisine and excellent food products such as the mountain-cured Trevélez ham.
For the energetic there's wonderful hiking in the mountains, year-round cycling, downhill skiing in winter (Órgiva is 1½ hour's drive from the ski slopes) and horse riding, as well as water-sports and golf on the coast.
Or just spend your time doing very little, dipping in and out of the pool, perhaps enjoying a well earned siesta … isn't that what a holiday is all about!
This has long been a favourite with our clients. Comments such as "We had the best of holidays. We loved the privacy, peace and quiet and the closeness to town", and "we had a brilliant holiday and the villa was lovely" are typical.
The house now has a younger sister, a recently built cottage next door, this one just for a couple (also with its own private pool). For more information, click here.
