Situated high above the Moorish village of Capileira at
1,600 metres above sea level, on the edge of the Sierra Nevada National Park, this 500 year old farmhouse enjoys stunning
views both north and south.
Carefully restored over the years, the cortijo is
set in 5,000 square metres of land and provides an excellent location for a mountain
holiday. From your door you can wander to the deserted village of Cebidilla or
set off to conquer Mulhacen, the highest peak in mainland Spain. Whether you want
to explore La Alpujarra - by foot, bicycle or on horseback - or simply unwind
and relax, this is a great place to be.
The friendly English owners have created
an independent, self-contained holiday apartment, with its own entrance and small
private terrace.
The views are magnificent, down the gorgeous
Poqueira Valley, to the Sierra de Lújar and the Mediterranean Sea beyond.
On a clear day it's possible to see Morocco, far away across the sea. Looking north, the peaks of Mulhacen
and Veleta, snow-capped for much of the year, dominate the rugged mountain scene.
There is one double and one twin bedroom. Doors lead from the comfortable lounge
to a private terrace (with outdoor furniture and a barbecue). The kitchen leads
through to a small dining room. Winter comfort is ensured by central heating throughout
which augments the cosy woodburner in the lounge.
The owners live in England but visit in the summer holidays and from time to time during the rest of the year. When there, they use the pool too but very discreetly, always giving their guest's priority and plenty of privacy.
It's a good sized pool, 10 x 4½ metres, solar heated, and enjoys the best of the wonderful mountain views which are all around. Birdsong and the distant clinking of goat bells will keep you company, the scents of lavender and rosemary pervading the crystal-clear mountain air.
Within
the extensive wild gardens you will find an abundance of fruit trees and, depending on the season,
you can help yourselves to pears, cherries, mulberries, walnuts and apples.
Mike (who co-owns the property with Lucy) is a professional guitarist and, when they are here, he will be happy to offer lessons to guests who are interested to learn or improve their skills. If you want, just borrow a guitar to serenade your fellow guests on the terrace as the sun sets over the distant sierras …
Mike and Lucy
will also help with arranging guides (for walking, horse riding or mountain biking)
or painting, pottery and yoga workshops.
Pretty Capileira is the nearest village, four kilometres away by road, a
picturesque 25 minutes walk down the mountain paths. The Mediterranean coast is just over an hour away and Órgiva, the main
market town of La Alpujarra, is half an hour away. Granada is a little more than
a one hour drive.
