Property Description
This is a quite exceptional property, a genuine Spanish hacienda in the midst of the burnished plains just to the north west of the Grazalema National Park.
Walled gardens full of the vivid colours of roses and bougainvillaea's form a splendid central courtyard around which this splendid farmhouse is built on three sides of the quadrangle.
It's a very substantial villa with eight bedrooms (three doubles, five twin bedded), ideal for a large group who want to enjoy their own piece of rural Andalucía and a genuine taste of old-fashioned Spanish grandeur.
Everything about the place is reminiscent of old-style Spanish opulence, everything that is, except the splendid 10 x 5 metre swimming pool, a more recent addition which looks across the miles of gently undulating farmland and olive groves surrounding the farmhouse.
There's plenty of outdoor furniture and dining space, so it's ideal for those who want to spend much of their time enjoying Andalucía's famed outdoor life and sunshine.
Inside, antique furniture, original paintings and rare old books compete for the eye's attention … along with an abundance of wall-mounted deer antlers and other hunting trophies.
The accommodation divides into three wings, which surround the central, formal gardens.
One wing has its own, spacious Andalus terrace overlooking the swimming pool. This part accommodates six (in one twin bedded and two double bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom). There is a stylish entrance hall, a huge living / dining room and a well equipped kitchen.
The other two wings comprise the larger accommodation which sleeps ten, with four twin bedrooms and one double, four bathrooms, a professionally equipped kitchen, another huge living / dining room and an entrance hall. At the rear this part also has its own private terrace.
Comfortable and spacious, this is a lovely place to stay. One with a real sense of history too: they don't build properties like this anymore - it's classic, old-time Andalucía revelling in all its former glory.
There are no shops or bars nearby, the nearest civilisation is the small town of Villamartín, some six kilometres away. The landscape all around is predominantly open, fertile countryside bedecked with olive and citrus groves, vineyards and fields of sunflowers.
It is an area which is highly regarded for its herds of bullfighting stock and beautiful horses. The low-lying terrain ensures that it enjoys a truly Mediterranean climate, although, be warned, it can be hot in mid-summer.
In the heart of the area known as Los Pueblos Blancos, access to some of the most beautiful and historic towns in Southern Spain is easy from here.
Arcos de la Frontera, considered by many to be Spain's premier "pueblo blanco" is just 25 minutes away, spectacularly perched on top of its dramatic sandstone ridge, Peñña Nueva, and overlooking the meandering Rio Guadelete which flows around it on three sides.
Historically an impregnable fortress town, its location is enhanced by its low white houses and fine sandstone churches, giving the town a similar feel and appearance to Ronda. The old town is fascinating, a labyrinth of narrow streets leading up to the Plaza Cabildo, overlooked by the Gothic Church of Santa María, the old castle (castillo) and by one of Spain's better Paradores on high.
Ronda is a lovely town, Hemingway's favourite in all Spain. Brimming with history and interest, a visit to its famous bridge and bullring, reputedly the oldest in the country, is a must.
Pretty Grazalema is not to be missed either. Not to mention the stunning mountain beauty of the incredible National Park which surrounds it.
Sevilla is an easy day trip from here too, as is Cádiz and the wonderful, sandy beaches of the Costa de la Luz, Spain's Atlantic coastline, mile upon mile of incredible seascape.
There is sun and sand galore, but there are also cliffs and coves, salt mashes, swamps and estuaries. It’s a region which includes the amazing wetlands of the Parque Nacional de Doñana, as well as two of only three towns who are allowed to call their wine “sherry”, Sanlucar de Barrameda and Puerto de Santa María (the other one is Jerez). Inland you will find wild sierras, fertile countryside, pastures of fighting bulls, world renowned vineyards and hidden villages where time passes slowly by.
But first and foremost the Costa de la Luz is about its vast, beautiful beaches; the deep blue ocean rolls in on mile upon mile of fine golden sand, sand dunes and pine forests rise up behind.
So, there's plenty to do and see from here - and a real Spanish hacienda to come home to!
