This was once a humble little village house where the old muleteer lived with his wife and 10 children! Amazingly they all seemed to have slept downstairs (sometimes three or four to a bed) as the upstairs was used to store animal feed for the mules and pigs they kept. As you would imagine, the house looks quite different now!
However, the new owners have retained as much as the could, such as the original terracotta floor tiles and the old roof beams. The ceilings have been raised and the windows enlarged creating a feeling of space and light, especially in the large upstairs bedroom.
Downstairs is an open-plan kitchen / dining room with a washing machine and a good sized fridge. This leads to a comfortable sitting room with two sofas, lots of games and a wood burner for chilly winter evenings. Beyond the living room there is a downstairs bedroom for children, and beyond that a bathroom with a shower. You can also enjoy secluded al fresco dining in the plant-filled back patio.
Upstairs is the beautiful master bedroom with a lovely king size bed, where you can lie and look out over the church spire and the terracotta roof tops of Cortes de la Frontera. There is also a large en-suite bathroom with a bath. Leading off the bedroom is a big sun terrace with fabulous panoramic views of the whole valley.
Cortes de la Frontera is an attractive little town set into the powerful range of limestone hills which look out over gently sloping valleys of olive groves, pasture and oak trees. With roughly 1,500 inhabitants, Cortes has bars, restaurants and supermarkets, plus a covered market selling fresh produce every day of the week. The village makes an ideal base from which to explore the Ronda Mountains, as well as Grazalema and Los Alcornocales National Parks, vast areas of beautiful protected nature.
