Property Description
This charming country cottage is set deep in some of the most glorious countryside to be found anywhere in Andalucía. Here you will wake up to a marvelous panoramic view which extends across afforested mountains and over rolling valleys, down to the Rock of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean beyond. Morocco is often clearly visible across the shimmering sea. A haven of peace and tranquility, it is a stunning setting, one of the very best in all Spain.
On a 30 hectare private estate within the superb natural beauty of the Alcornocales National Park, all around are hillsides of wild flowers, oak and olive trees. There are a few other properties on the estate (the main farmhouse and a couple of other little cottages) but nothing disturbs the glorious seclusion of this one. There is plenty of countryside and acres of space for all.
Easily accessible, the cottage is just four kilometres from pretty Gaucín village, less than an hour's drive from Gibraltar Airport and 75 minutes from Málaga Airport. A little country road winds gently down from the village to El Colmenar in the valley below and a short farm track (in excellent condition) leads off from this road and takes you directly to the cottage, which is gated and hidden away behind high whitewashed walls and verdant greenery on a lower terrace. There's private parking to the side.
Inside, its all about comfort and relaxation. One enters through a little courtyard with a fountain at its centre and lots of plants and shrubs. The spacious living room is cosy and restful, with armchairs and a sofa neatly gathered around a splendid old fireplace under its wood-beamed, vaulted ceiling. It's all very tasteful, colourful but calm, with a genuine country cottage feel.
Satellite TV (Freeview), a DVD player and a radio invite relaxation. On one side there's a dining area (the dining table comfortably seats six) with a compact little kitchen beyond. It's small but adequately equipped with an oven, a two ring hob and fridge / freezer.
The master double bedroom (with en-suite shower room) is just a couple of steps down from the living room. It's pretty too, with solid wood furniture, pretty fabrics and well-stocked bookshelves. As elsewhere in the cottage, the whitewashed walls and terracotta floor tiles keep everything cool and serene in summer and there's a ceiling fan for good measure.
The second bedroom is a twin, also with its own en-suite shower room and ceiling fan. This one is accessed across the little patio. Both bathrooms have underfloor heating and the rest of the cottage is warmed by a hot air system which operates from the log fire.
French windows open from the living room to a covered terrace, a delightfully peaceful spot where you can relax in comfort and take in the magnificent south facing view which opens up in front of you. A great place to watch the sun setting over the hills, it becomes completely perfect with a cold glass of something refreshing close to hand!
To the side of the terrace is the divine pool (7 m x 4 m) and bathing terrace with its sun loungers, furniture and parasol. This is just bliss; the gardens beyond are filled with mature trees, marguerites, cape daisies, lavender and honeysuckle. With the Andalusian sun shining brightly overhead, this is as good as it gets!
Beyond, there are fields and orchards, olive and oak forests to explore. The estate grounds include an all weather tennis court which guests can use (it's shared with a couple of the other properties on the estate).
There's plenty to do around and about. The mountain countryside of the Natural Parks which surround Gaucín is ideal for walkers, bird watchers and nature lovers; there are lots of fascinating little villages and hilltop towns to explore. A drive north over the spectacular mountain road will quickly bring you to Ronda with its spectacular gorge and Spain's oldest bullring. The Mediterranean's Costa del Sol is just 30 minutes away, the beautiful beaches of La Costa de la Luz a little further, a 90-minute drive from here.
Perhaps you will be tempted to try a taste of Morocco - the fast boat from Tarifa to Tangiers takes just 40 minutes. Great fun, something totally different … but maybe you prefer to watch Africa from afar, from right here at this traditional and very pretty little cottage in the hills.
