In the centre of Gaucín, this is a special property:
a traditional village house, beautifully restored by two men from Madrid, one
of whom is a retired antique and arts dealer.
The basement of this three story building was originally a Lagar, more than
just a place to press grapes into wine, this was an authentic wine factory. Now
the breakfast room, the tables are gathered around the restored wooden mechanism
through one end of which the grapes were introduced, to be pressed barefoot, passing
from the other end as grape juice ready to be fermented into wine.
"La Fructuosa" also has a big terrace, full of fragrant, potted lemon
trees and flowers, another great place to start your day and delight in the views
over the surrounding hills to the Mediterranean and Africa beyond.
The hotel has four large rooms, each with a big sitting area and luxurious bathroom
(including hydro massage tubs) and one, more modest, attic room. All are decorated
with antiques and collectibles, and if you happen to fall in love with any of
the furnishings or decorative objects just settle a price with Luis or Jesús and
take it home with you!
The rooms all have stunning views of the Mediterranean
and Gibraltar. On clear days one can see all the way across the sea to the African
coast and even details of the Moroccan mountain range that fringes its northern
border.
There is a comfortable sitting room, housing more art exhibits and shelves
of books, but in the end, notwithstanding all of La Fructuosa's many charms, the
memory guests might cherish most of all is Luis and Jesús' honest and affectionate
hospitality.
There is another special joy for clients staying at La Frutuosa, the excellent restaurant which is open on Fridays and Saturdays (evenings only). Luis and Jesús are, without doubt, two of the best chefs in all Andalucía and both delightful cuisine and a convivial dining ambience are guaranteed.
