Situated in the tiny hamlet of Capilerilla, high in the ancient Moorish district of La Taha, this house offers a peaceful retreat in a traditional environment. Walls and original chestnut-beamed ceilings have been painted in the vivid earth colours of the area in contrast to the blue and green handmade tiles in the kitchen.

This is an authentic old, Alpujarran dwelling. Furnishings are quite basic but it's attractive in its rustic way. From the south-facing terrace, covered in an old vine and dripping with plants, there are views over the rural pastures in the valley below and of the mountains beyond.

All on one floor, the house comprises a large living room which opens out to the terrace at one end, with the kitchen area separated off at the other.

The two bedrooms - both doubles which lead off from the living room. The bedrooms don't, unfortunately, enjoy the views: natural light is provided by skylights.

A few minutes walk away is the little Alpujarran 'pueblo' of Pitres with a few bars, a supermarket and a good little market on Friday mornings.

Not least of the attractions in Pitres is a splendid swimming pool, open to the public in July and August (for a small fee), set in an idyllic rural setting with fabulous panoramic views of the mountains in the distance. There are worse places to while away a summer's afternoon or two!

A quiet and authentically rustic Alpujarran home, all around are the magnificent southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains. From here its easy to escape into beautiful nature, following the many paths linking the seven villages of La Tahá to each other through the gorgeous rural countryside.
