Property Description

The Aldea of Zagrilla is a little village situated in divine countryside in the heart of the National Park, Las Sierras de Subbética. An aldea is a hamlet, its houses gathered around a central olive mill, the major source of income here in days gone by.

This particular aldea divides into two, Zagrilla Alta, the higher village, with its lower counterpart, Zagrilla Baja, in the valley below. The house is situated in the higher village, at the end of a short but steep approach road.

the pool and views

A traditional village house, it has been very nicely renovated by its Spanish owner, a local specialist in rural tourism. Furnishings are modern and comfortable, yet nicely rustic in style, and the house is both neat and practical. It's an ideal holiday home for a family who want to enjoy serene village life in the heartland of rural Andalucía.

The house is on two floors, with the kitchen and living / dining room downstairs, the three bedrooms (one double and two twins) and the bathroom upstairs. There is an extra little room upstairs which may be used too, if two single bedrooms are preferred to one of the twins.

bedroom

There is a small walled patio at the back of the house, where children can play safely, with the little swimming pool on a raised level, accessed by steps.

Francisco, the owner, who also speaks good English and French, will tell you absolutely everything you could want to know about the Subbética de Córdoba: from the best walking or riding routes to its best restaurants and museums. Few people are more knowledgeable - or enthusiastic - about the region. He has compiled an impressive house book, full of useful information about the area.

the village of Zagrilla Alta

From the house you can enjoy the view over the Sierra Alcaide; all around the surroundings of pretty Zagrilla are superb and unspoilt. The streets of the hamlet follow the ancient Arabic pattern, irregularly following the contours of the mountain range. Many of the villagers still do their washing at the communal lavadero, an age-old tradition which involves simultaneous scrubbing and chatting over the ever-flowing, crystalline spring waters. In this wonderful landscape, peace is a word which readily comes to mind …

the rear patio

Zagrilla's location could hardly be better, as it is only ten minutes away from the lovely town of Priego de Cordoba, a definite must see. If you are lucky enough to be here during Easter Week or Corpus, you will witness some of the most expressive and impressive religious pageants seen anywhere in Spain.

double bedroom

Apart from the wonderful countryside and delightful villages of the Subbética itself, the great historical cities of Córdoba and Granada are less than an hour and two hours away respectively, and the flamenco-buzzing energy of Sevilla is just another 30 minutes further.

the swimming pool

And after a day out, or just a stroll in the magical hills, what better than to end the day with a nice meal at one of Zagrilla's excellent restaurants? You will be served some delicious local dishes, such as remojó, a most surprising cold salad, made with salted cod, oranges and olive oil, or lomo de orza, cooked pork loin which has been cured in olive oil - to mention just a couple - as well as more classical international dishes should you prefer.

dining area (with the kitchen behind)

Charcuterie is renowned in the area and, among others, you should try the typical chorizo and the delicious morcilla de matanza (home-made black pudding). To finish on a sweet note, the quince jelly made in Zagrilla Baja should do just fine.

So … what are you waiting for?
