Property Description
This lovely little cottage has a lot going for it. Not only is it situated in sublime countryside, rolling hills of olives dotting the landscape as far as the eye can see, but it's also right in the centre of Andalucía making Granada, Sevilla, Córdoba and the Mediterranean coast all easy day trips.
It's also attractive and well fitted out, a cosy, comfortable, romantic hideaway for a couple who just want to relax and unwind in the Andalusian sunshine.
From Iznájar, itself a fascinating little town, a pretty country lane winds up into the hills, with spectacular views over the azure-blue waters of the lake below at every turn. It takes you deep into the virgin, farming countryside between Fuente de Cesna and Algarinejo. It is here, in this timeless paradise, that you will find this farmhouse gleaming bright and white on a hillside. It is set in three hectares of land.
The owners, a charming English couple who have chosen to retire here, live in a separate part of the farmhouse. They have cleverly and caringly converted the original part of the property into a self contained rental home with its own entrance and lots of privacy. Clients also have exclusive use of the lovely pool (6 m x 3.5 m) and its surrounding gardens.
This is a delightful spot where a furnished gazebo (and barbecue area) offers shade amid graveled gardens with the pool alongside. Views extend far and wide. There are other farmhouses dotted around the hillsides but nothing remotely close, nothing to spoil the joyous countryside peace and tranquility. The sunny pool terrace faces south and west and is completely private.
Just around the corner from the pool, the holiday cottage is accessed through a private terrace, another lovely flower-filled spot where you can enjoy al fresco meals under the shade of its cane awning.
A cheerful blue door opens to the cottage which has been completely restored in an "Al-Andaluz" Moorish style, offering accommodation which is both comfortable and stylish.
The little living room is calm but also colourful: lamps concealed behind alcoves, lots of cushions and a wood burning stove are offset by white walls, a wood beamed ceiling and terracota floor tiles. There is Spanish TV with DVD and radio, and a selection of books, DVD's and board games to keep you entertained. It's all very cosy but also cool in summer; the original stone walls are very thick and keep it well insulated.
Two steps up, two down take you across to the neat and tidy kitchen / diner which is well equipped, an attractive space both to cook and eat in, although we suspect you will be taking most of your meals outside in the clean, fresh mountain air.
The double bedroom (with its comfortable king-sized bed) and an Arabic-style bathroom are upstairs and both are really pretty. Moroccan artifacts, cushions, rugs and lamps add pleasing touches of colour, style and interest in a classic country cottage environment. And just in case you prefer two bathrooms, there is also a walk-in shower in a bathroom located just outside the cottage, on the way to the swimming pool.
Guests staying at the cottage have exclusive use of the attractive outdoor areas around the pool which, like the cottage itself, are not overlooked by the owners house which is at the far end of the property and has its own entrance and parking. The owners are such a friendly couple that you will probably become the best of friends within minutes, but they are equally happy to leave clients to chill out undisturbed.
Here you will enjoy the sun, views and stunning sunsets to the full - it's a great place just to relax and enjoy the countryside. It's equally well located for those who want to explore the treasures of Andalucía, whether it be to visit the Alhambra in Granada, the Mezquita in Córdoba or the Giralda in Sevilla, all easily accessible by car. As are the beaches and golf courses along the Mediterranean coast.
Closer to hand is mile upon mile of gorgeous countryside, great walking and bird watching country interspersed here and there by classic little pueblos like Algarinejo and Iznájar, both fifteen minutes away, where farming still dominates and tradition still rules. There is a fantastic restaurant in Algarinejo, by the way, "Casa Piolas", which is highly recommended. Iznájar is a hilltop town with spectacular views over its 32 kilometre-long "Lake of Andalucia".
Other places of interest and beauty well worth a visit include Ronda, the Sierra Nevada, El Torcal Natural Park (near Antequera), the Alpujarras and Gibraltar, as well as Priego de Córdoba and the other towns and villages of the delightful Subbética Natural Park on your doorstep.
A million things to do, so many places to visit and sights to see; and a lovely little cottage in the sun to come home to!
