Property Description
Just below the classic pueblo blanco of Gaucín, this south-facing and very privately situated villa is hidden away in mature olive and pine woods. It enjoys one of the most fabulous views in southern Europe, stretching across the Genal Valley far below to the straits of Gibraltar, the Mediterranean Sea and the Rif mountains of Africa.
All around, the majestic scenery of the Serranía de Ronda provides brilliant brush strokes of colour and contrast.
Painted a pleasing rosy-pink outside, the villa is secluded from view by its leafy surrounds. A ½ kilometre farm track leads off from the country road (which winds up from the coast to Gaucín), to the property's 3,000 m2 woodland estate and to the graveled parking area to one side of the house (with space for three cars).
Inside the style of the villa is a mix of traditional Spanish rustic with a contemporary twist. Antique ceiling beams and terracotta floor tiles combine with modern, minimalistic decor. It has been designed to take full advantage of the wonderful countryside all around and the spectacular views beyond.
The ground floor offers a huge, open-plan living space on different levels, steps between the rooms adding interest architecturally to the the layout. Each of the rooms - the kitchen at one end, the dining room in the middle and the living room beyond - open through glass doors to a south-facing terrace which runs along the full length of the property. Wherever you are in the house, the natural splendour of its setting is always with you.
A clever feature is the two sliding glass doors in the living room which simply disappear into the wall-space, making the room completely open on both sides. Perfect for spring, summer and autumn, these open to the front terrace on one side, and to the gorgeous swimming pool at the side of the house.
Here, three comfy, white sofas are gathered around an open fireplace and the satellite TV and DVD. There is central heating throughout most of the house, too.
At the opposite end, the kitchen is thoroughly modern with all mod-cons (double oven, five-ring gas hob, American style fridge / freezer, dishwasher et al), The colour scheme here is black and white. The kitchen also has French windows which open to the southern terrace so it doesn't miss out on the views down the valley either!
The dining area in between features a huge wooden dining table which will comfortably seat ten and a wood burning stove under its lovely, old wooden beamed ceiling.
The ground floor is completed by a utility room at the back (which houses the washing machine and clothes dryer) and a guest W.C / shower room which is also easily accessed from the pool terrace.
From the dining area, stairs lead up to the bedroom suites. To the right is the master double bedroom suite, its ample space gloriously flooded with light from its two retractable glass sliding doors (just like those in the living room below it).
To the south these open to a private, railed balcony / terrace which has the very best views of all; to the side they look out over the pool to the wooded hillsides beyond.
There is a walk-in dressing room and a lovely, blue and white tiled en-suite bathroom (with a shower over the bath tub). As elsewhere in the villa, vivid modern art and bright fabrics add bold splashes of colour against the predominantly white decor.
To the left, the stairs lead up to two smaller bedrooms (one double bedded, the other a twin). Neat and pretty, both have double shuttered doors which open to the southern views. The twin bedroom has its own small terrace. Both have en-suite bathrooms (with power showers over bath tubs).
The front terrace runs the entire length of the villa with a shaded dining area as well as lots of sunbathing space.
To the side of the house is the equally expansive terrace which wraps around the beautiful, 12 m x 4 m pool (with night lighting). A cane awning provides a shady spot from which to keep an eye on proceedings.
The mountainside all around is richly planted with mature fig, olive, pine and fruit trees. Here you can pluck a lemon for your gin and tonic or a grapefruit for breakfast … birdsong fills the air, the pool glistens gloriously blue in the sunshine and you are surrounded by nothing other than Andalusian countryside peace and harmony. Well, almost … it is just possible to hear the traffic which passes by, from time to time, on the country road down below the villa, but this didn't unduly disturb the idyllic scene when we were there.
The hillside on which the property is built is real mountainside so beyond the front terrace the land does fall away quite dramatically down to the road below; there is plenty of protection from shrubs and trees but it would not be wise for a determined youngster to decide to explore beyond them.
It is easily possible to walk from the villa to the village - and it's mostly downhill on your way home! Gaucín is one of the classic white village of Andalucía, as pretty as a postcard. Its narrow winding streets, hidden alleyways and spectacular views have long been an inspiration for painters and photographers. For a village of its size it has an excellent selection of little shops, restaurants and tapas bars.
There's plenty to do around and about. The mountain countryside of the Natural Parks which surround Gaucín is ideal for walkers, birdwatchers and nature lovers; there are lots of fascinating little villages and hilltop towns to explore.
A drive north over the spectacular mountain road will quickly bring you to Ronda with its spectacular gorge and Spain's oldest bullring. The Mediterranean's Costa del Sol is just 30 minutes away, the beautiful beaches of La Costa de la Luz a little further, a 90-minute drive from here.
Perhaps you will be tempted to try a taste of Morocco - the fast boat from Tarifa to Tangiers takes just 40 minutes. Great fun, something totally different … but maybe you will prefer just to watch Africa from afar, from right here at this secluded and very comfortable villa.
