Property Description
This is a really lovely 19th Century farmhouse, all its history and time-honoured style and tradition still very much intact, yet furnished and equipped in a delightfully comfortable, bright and cheerful way. It's great!
The location is fabulous too, very easy to get to (just a few minutes drive from Arcos de la Frontera), yet deep in the glorious countryside surrounds of its own 18 acre private estate.
The panoramic views are tremendous, in one direction across the patchwork of fields and little rural settlements to the distant town which rises imperiously out of the plains on its dramatic, rocky outcrop; other views from this hilltop vantage point extend across the rolling hillsides of the Sierra de Cádiz to the high peaks of the Grazalema mountains which stretch across the horizon.
Sunsets have to be seen to be believed. Whatever the time of day, a more private, tranquil and pastoral setting is difficult to imagine.
To the front of the farmhouse there are huge, extensive gardens - partly landscaped, partly lawned - with a wonderful variety of flowering shrubs and exotic tropical trees as well as many indigenous varieties too. A tremendous amount of care and attention has been put into nurturing and maintaining these lovely and very mature gardens. It shows …
The rest of the estate has its own attractions with woodland areas, orchards, olive groves and natural pools to discover. The Gardener will be pleased to supply you with seasonal fruits and vegetables from the orchard gardens - just ask!
The gardens lead down the gentle slopes to a good-sized, almost square, swimming pool (8.5 m x 8 m), glistening blue within its green and grassy surrounds. Immediately beyond is the even larger water deposit (used, of course, to irrigate the land and gardens) with views across to delightful Arcos in the distance.
A glorious spot, care should be taken with young children as the pool isn't fenced. It's more than 100 metres from the house and cannot be seen from there.
In keeping with proper Spanish tradition, the farmhouse is dominated by a huge, ancient palm tree which towers high above. Pathways lead through serene and shady garden terraces directly in front of the house to a variety of outdoor spaces where you can sit and relax or eat al fresco. Whatever your mood, there are plenty of sunny spots and other hideaway corners to choose from.
When you venture inside you will soon discover that everything has been renovated, decorated and furnished with excellent good taste and quality. Tradition and modern comfort have been combined together in a really pleasing way.
The result is a holiday villa with both charm and imagination. Lovely details ensure that its traditional character has been preserved whilst providing lots of comfort, colour and convenience in its tastefully furnished rooms.
Most of the ground floor is taken up by a long, double living room which is open-plan but with each area enjoying its own distinctive style and character. The first part is delightfully traditional with its wood beamed ceiling and carved, antique furniture colourfully set off by a joyful carpet. Double doors open to the wide terrace and gardens beyond.
Two steps up, the second living space is more modern in style with a plump and comfy corner sofa and an armchair gathered around a glass coffee table in front of the TV. It's another very tastefully furnished space with lots of cheerful colour provided by rugs, cushions and original art. Double doors also open from here to the gardens and terrace.
As elsewhere throughout the property there are all mod-cons too. Windows and doors are double glazed, there's central heating throughout, bathrooms have heated towel rails. Ceiling fans and thick, well insulated walls keep everything cool in summer. There's an audio system (with CD player, radio and tape deck) and DVD as well as the TV (Spanish programmes only).
At the far end of the ground floor is one of the bedrooms - a tasteful and very spacious twin room which also opens to the gardens. Its attractive en-suite bathroom is alongside (shower over bath tub). Beds are pushed together but can easily be separated (if preferred) as there's plenty of room.
From the "traditional" end of the living room, a short flight of steps lead up to the dining room and kitchen on the floor above. In keeping with styles elsewhere, the dining room is light, bright and colourful. This leads on to a thoroughly modern kitchen with plenty of space and equipment. Both the oven and the microwave are conveniently placed at eye-height level.
At the far end of the kitchen, a utility room leads off which houses the washing machine and a W.C.
Between the two living spaces the main stairway leads up (via a landing with a splendid art-deco window) to the other two bedrooms, one off to the right, one off to the left. Both are double bedded, both have fantastic views over the gardens to Arcos de la Frontera, both have attractive en-suite full bathrooms (with showers over bath tubs).
There is also an entrance hall and another exit at the back on this higher level. A few metres away from the property is a big parking area with space for four or five cars. This is partly shaded, something which is much appreciated in high summer.
Some 60 metres beyond there is a second house of more recent vintage. This is always closed when the farmhouse is rented out on its own, so the entire estate is always completely private for guests. But, for larger groups, this second house (with two bedrooms) can also be rented (in conjunction with the main farmhouse). Click here for more details of renting both properties.
Please note that in high season (mid July to the end of August) the two properties must be rented together.
The low, rolling hillsides of the National Park of Los Alcornocales, one of the world's largest forests of cork oak, forms a delightful backdrop with the magnificent mountains of the Sierra de Grazalema rising up behind.
Located less than a kilometre from Arcos' 18-hole golf club, it's no more than 10 minutes drive into town from here. A really attractive, historic little town, many consider it to be Spain's premier pueblo blanco.
Excursions to the other, delightfully pretty pueblos blancos and the gorgeous countryside which surround them are easy from here. A wonderful road climbs right up into the mountains, winding its way through unimaginably beautiful scenery, and on to Grazalema, probably the most delightful of them all.
It's a journey - and a destination - that will gladden your heart. Beyond lies Ronda, entirely different, but equally magical.
And fabulous places as diverse as the golden beaches of the Costa de la Luz (45 km), enchanting, mysterious Cádiz (50 km) and the glittering splendour of Sevilla (90 km) are all quick and easy journeys.
Jerez de la Frontera is just 25 kilometres. And from here, a really beautiful new motorway cuts through the heart of the National Park on its way south to Gibraltar, the Mediterranean - and Morocco beyond.
