Property Description

A lovely, rustic old house with splendid gardens (which enclose an irresistible, oval-shaped swimming pool), it is superbly situated too, in glorious open countryside between the two high mountain villages of Bubión and Capileira.

the villa

Views from here are far and wide, extending along the beautiful Poqueria Valley, to the southern mountain ranges beyond and finally to the distant Mediterranean Sea.

The lawned garden, behind the house, where the pool is located, nestles below a steep bank, richly planted with trees and roses. Another house is just visible, on high at the top of this bank, so it's not completely private here, but the neighbours are quite a distance away and do not really disturb the tranquility of the blissful scene below.

living room

Just fifty or so metres below the country road which winds up the mountain between the two villages, a short driveway leads down to a large graveled parking area at the front of the house.

So, getting around and about couldn't be easier. And with two of the most picturesque and charming of the old Moorish villages of La Alpujarra close at hand, when you wish to pop out for a bit of shopping, or go to a restaurant or tapas bar, you can just as easily walk if you prefer. Bubión is downhill, Capileira uphill; either way it's a lovely stroll.

pool and gardens

The main entrance to the house is to the side, through an attractive, beamed and olive-covered porch area, plenty wide enough to sit out and enjoy an al fresco meal, shaded from the mid-day sun.

Here, again, it's not completely private as another house now occupies the terrace below. Recently built, this is rented out occasionally but is otherwise unoccupied. More importantly, it does not look over the pool and gardens. Only its chimney pots are visible from here.

bedroom

Inside, all is rustic, with chestnut beamed ceilings and lovely old terracotta floor tiles so characteristic of the area, throughout the house.

It has everything you will need for a comfortable holiday. On two floors, the entrance lobby leads left to a large, country-style kitchen and this, in turn, leads through to the pool, its terraced surround and the gardens. To the right is the comfy living room with its sofas gathered around the open fireplace, a satellite TV in the corner (BBC free-to-air system), just in case you want to catch up with the World News …

front porch

There is a full bathroom on this floor too, along with the third bedroom which is neat enough but only has a very small window.

Upstairs there is another full bathroom on the mezzanine landing, with a few more steps leading up on either side to the two main bedrooms. These have plenty of light, enjoy the lovely views, and one has doors to a small balcony. One has a queen-sized double plus bunk beds, the other has a queen-sized double and an extra single for a child.

kitchen

Back downstairs, the kitchen is ideally placed to make up a few iced cocktails, or whatever grabs your fancy, and take them through to the pool. A shaded terrace area immediately outside is another lovely place to hide a little from the sun, watching your companions splashing around in the pool. Oval shaped, approximately 12 metres x 8 metres, it's as good as a pool can get! Not for beginners though, the shallowest part is 1.5 metres deep. The lawned surrounds offer plenty of space to improve your tan or for the youngsters to run around.

bedroom

Once here you will probably take some shifting, but all around and about you have the most beautiful part of La Alpujarra to explore, including Spain's highest mountains which rise up above Capileira.

pool and gardens

Ideal walking country, whether you are looking for a serious hike or just a pleasant stroll down to the river and back, here the weather in summer is just about as perfect as can be: warm, dry and sunny. At an altitude of 1,400 metres, there's none of the humidity of the coast, nor the oppressive heat of Andalucia's cities.

All in all, a comfortable and characterful house in a great holiday location.
