Property Description
The high mountain villages of La Alpujarra clamber down the steep mountain sides with little cobbled streets running through the maze of little houses which have been built on successive levels. Bubión is no exception and at the very bottom, just below the church and the village plaza, is the oldest and most traditional quarter of the village, "Barrio Bajo".
It is here, that you will find this lovely old Moorish house which has been restored and extended to create a spacious home on three floors. The historical style has been retained, with its huge chestnut beamed ceilings, terracotta floor tiles and white-washed walls, but now enhanced by modern comfort and facilities.
The advantages of being at the bottom of the village are immediately evident - no traffic, countryside all around and uninterrupted views of the beautiful Poqueira Ravine which extend to the Mediterranean Sea. The only disadvantage is that it's quite a climb up to the top of the village where the shops, bars and restaurants are located. Mind you, you can drive up if you are feeling lazy!
With two terraces (one a huge roof terrace) there is no excuse for not indulging in this magnificent Alpujarran setting. Inside there is plenty of space too, with two large bedrooms and a generous sized open-plan living room / kitchen / dining room.
The house is now a protected building, an excellent example of the traditional architecture of La Alpujarra. Built entirely in stone by the Berbers who settled these villages long ago, it is at least six hundred years old and stands on a natural foundation of rock. The floors are laid with terracotta tiles and the ceilings are chestnut beamed in the typical Alpujaran way.
Here one is transported back to the Spain of days long gone by. On clear days one can see the Rif mountains of Morocco rising up across the shimmering Mediterranean Sea. Although very much part of the village, you nevertheless feel hidden away from the rest of the world here in this wonderfully rustic abode.
The south-facing views down the Poqueira Valley are fabulous, encompassing the rural bliss of the surrounding mountains, sweeping across a shimmering Mediterranean Sea to Morocco beyond. The walk down to Pampaneira which starts from the Church is one of the (many) great walks of the Alpujarras.
A typical comment from clients, "we loved the house in Bubión and the whole atmosphere and friendliness of the village. I could quite easily never come back to England!".
