Property Description
This beautiful country house resides in complete privacy on a wooded hillside of wild olives and Spanish oaks, seven kilometres south of Gaucín village. It's a quite magnificent location, set within its own five acre estate (itself part of a farm of over 500 acres), with stunning views over some of the most pleasing countryside anywhere in Andalucía.
The hills and dales of Los Alcornocales Natural Park roll unceasingly across the horizon in one of the most seductively peaceful settings imaginable. To the south, a little country road winds gently down to Jimena de la Frontera, another delightful Spanish pueblo with Gibraltar, the Mediterranean Sea and Morocco not far beyond. To the north it takes a stunning route over the mountains to Ronda, passing pretty Gaucín on the way.
The villa enjoys the best of both worlds, beautifully quiet and secluded, idyllic countryside all around, yet conveniently close to civilisation.
The property is available for rental during the summer (from mid July through to mid September) and possibly at other times too. The owners, who live here for most of the year, love to travel the world and are often happy to make arrangements to be away if guests want to stay here.
Spacious and airy with high beamed ceilings, the house itself is every bit as wonderful as its location. It has been featured in Country Living magazine and in many Spanish magazines including Casa y Campo and La Casa de Maria Claire.
Built more than 20 years ago using the very best of traditional materials and craftsmanship, it feels like its been here for centuries yet has all modern amenities too. It's a country house of outstanding class and classical beauty.
On the ground floor, to the right of the entrance hall and the cloakroom, one enters to a beautifully furnished drawing room with high ceilings and a minstrel's gallery. Two sets of double doors lead to a shaded terrace and the gardens beyond.
There are splendid works of art and fabulous antique furniture pieces everywhere, as there are throughout the house. Yet it's so, so comfortable too; a real, lived-in house, joyfully full of life and timeless charm.
At the far end of the drawing room is a very pretty double bedroom (with a king-sized bed), with double doors opening to the rear terraces and gardens. This can be made up as a twin bedroom if preferred. It has its own en-suite bathroom (bath tub and walk-in shower).
To the left of the entrance hall is the open-plan kitchen / dining room, a room of great character under its wood-beamed ceiling, with double doors opening to the large, covered dining terrace outside with a long table which comfortably seats ten for meals al fresco, as well as a smaller table with seating for more casual outdoor relaxing.
The owners are both keen cooks and the kitchen is equipped with absolutely everything.
At the far end of the kitchen, beyond the utility room (housing the washing machine, an extra fridge and the freezer), a short hallway leads to two more bedrooms, a lovely double and an attractive twin.
The double (with a queen-sized bed) has its own sitting area with an arabic archway leading through to its en-suite, walk-in shower room. Double doors open to the gardens outside. The pretty twin room has views to the swimming pool terrace and is next door to another bathroom.
The master bedroom suite is upstairs with its magnificent, ornately and intricately carved wooden double bed. This bedroom has its own private sitting room / studio and its own private terrace too.
The huge dressing room / en-suite bathroom has both a walk-in shower and bath tub. Needless to say, the views are fabulous and far and wide, enjoyed from the double balcony windows which flood the bedroom with light and from the terrace alongside.
Outside is just as delightful as inside, with different shaded, furnished terrace areas to choose from, all of them enjoying the fabulous views.
At different times of day and in different seasons, each comes into its own: one enjoys the best of the summer breezes, another is the best place to watch the fabulous sunsets over distant mountains, Gibraltar and the sea. There are lawned areas too and and hundreds of flowering shrubs and mature trees growing among huge mountain rocks. It's really lovely.
A little path leads around to the fantastic swimming pool (11 m x 5 m) at the side of the house. Natural rock forms are the very special feature of this swimming pool area, rising up vertically and very dramatically immediately alongside the pool.
Verdant vegetation and trees clamber up and over the almost sheer rock face. It's an absolutely wonderful and very unique natural setting. Please note that the pool area isn't fenced so, although children are of course welcome, parents shouldn't let their young children play in the gardens unattended.
A tennis court nearby is shared with a few neighbouring villas in the vicinity.
This is an excellent base from which to explore this delightful part of Andalucia. Excursions can be made to Ronda, famous for the oldest bullring in Spain, the wind-surfing beaches at Tarifa, across the Straits of Gibraltar to Tangier in Morocco, or to the many golf courses on the coast including Valderrama at Sotogrande. This is great walking country and there's horse riding available locally too.
The local villages and little towns - Gaucín and Jimena de la Frontera in particular - are very pretty and well worth visiting, not least because they have an excellent selection of bars and restaurants.
There is a very good restaurant in little San Pablo de Buceite as well, actually on the railway station platform (a trip on the narrow gauge railway shouldn't be missed either, it's an amazing jouney through really dramatic countryside and runs between Ronda and the coast).
If you want to eat in but don't want to bother with cooking, Paco (the gardener) and his wife make a fantastic paella and other delightful meals (always very popular with guests). They leave a menu in the house for you to choose from and deliver the meals to your door at a time which suits you.
Just one of many fabulous little details in this beautiful house of tremendous character, quality and class; one which will make you very happy to be here!
