Situated in a large and leafy church square towards the top of Jimena village, it's an old, timber-beamed house full of character, built on two floors, looking out onto the plaza at the front and to a garden and views over the rolling hills behind. Nicely sunny, light filtering through from both sides, it's a peaceful place.
From an entrance hall (there's a downstairs WC) one passes to a relaxing sitting room, graced by a Norwegian wood burner, and then through an archway to a spacious open-plan living / dining room, painted in lighter and darker lemon tones. An open fireplace makes the room cosy in winter months.
In fact the house is an excellent choice for out-of-season rentals : the open fireplace and wood-burning stove keep everything warm and snug. Moreover, firewood is included in the rental price.
It's just two steps down from the dining area to a well-equipped kitchen and breakfast room. Both from here and from the living room there is access to the walled, paved garden planted with flowering shrubs and a palm tree.
There is an excellent view of the surrounding countryside, distant mountains rising up behind to provide a beautiful backdrop. Five steps take one down to the blue mosaic swimming pool, where one can enjoy complete privacy while sunbathing. There are also two very good outdoor public pools in Jimena, as well as excellent swimming in the wonderful, deep pools of the Hozgarganta river.
The upper floor of the house, all timber-beamed and terracotta tiled, comprises two en-suite bedrooms and a terrace. A double bedroom faces the square and a twin-bedded room has a balcony that continues to the covered terrace at the rear of the building. A day bed is placed here in the shade, ideal for languid afternoons. The views are terrific. For those who need a complete rest, maid service can be arranged.
Jimena de la Frontera is one of the most charming of Andalucia's small towns, its castle presiding over a village well known for its tapas bars and restaurants.
With natural parkland all around, there is plenty of scope for great walking and horse riding, while Sevilla, Ronda and the beaches and water sports at Sotogrande and Tarifa are popular choices for day trips.
One great day out not to be missed is on the narrow gauge railway from Jimena to Ronda. The little train stops at the little white villages along the way and passes through fabulous landscapes; it's air-conditioned and you can buy drinks on board!
The nearest golf courses are located in Sotogrande, on the Mediterranean coast, the most famous of which is Valderama which has held many of the famous Ryder Cup events. Sotogrande is approximately 25 minutes drive from the village, and has four other golf courses.
