Property Description

This rambling old house, right in the heart of picturesque Gaucín village, has been renovated with flair and imagination. A house of great character and real, rustic charm, it is warm and welcoming, full of interest and pleasant surprises.

roof terrace

On three floors there are lots of stairs which take you in, out and all over the place! Not least of it's fascinations is that it takes a good half hour to work out exactly where you are!

This is no conventional "two up, two down" property; stairways (some internal, some external) and passageways interconnect the floors and rooms in a way that, although initially mystifying, is a large part of its special charm. Rustic decoration and furnishings (with a strong Moorish influence) enhance its casually comfortable authenticity.

kitchen detail

Because of its many steps and terraces, we don't consider the property suitable for young children or anyone with wobbly legs. Babies are welcome but it's not the right choice for toddlers or youngsters. There are three bedrooms (one double, one twin and one single) but the house is best suited, we think, for a maximum of four guests.

pool and garden

Let's start on the top floor … this is where the spacious living room is. Light and airy, it's cosy and colourful, a room made to relax in. Double doors open to a roof terrace with stunning views over the village rooftops, across unspoiled countryside and down to the Med. On a clear day the Rif Mountains of North Africa can be seen across the shimmering sea! The terrace has teak patio furniture and a cane awning for shade.

dining room

The master (double) bedroom, with en-suite bathroom (bathtub only, no shower) is also on this floor.

roof terrace

The second bedroom, a pretty twin (the beds are pushed together) is on the floor below. Its en-suite bathroom features an enormous, Moroccan-style bath tub. With windows on both sides, it looks out over the garden and pool from its balcony.

master bedroom

A hallway leads through to a well equipped galley kitchen (electric oven, five ring hob, microwave, dishwasher etc) with room for a small breakfast table in front of a glass fronted wood burner. Doors open to steps which descend down through an internal patio, full of lovely plants, to the garden and pool. It's all very "Andaluz".

views from the roof terrace

Along from the kitchen, passing a cloakroom / shower room (decorated in Moorish style), the hallway leads to the reception / dining room at the front of the house. Another comfortable and spacious room with a wood-burning stove and large refectory dining table, it's at ground floor level on this side of the house.

hallway detail

At the back of the house there's a lower floor at garden level. A third (single) bedroom is on this floor, tucked away behind the pool alcove, which can be accessed by the external patio steps from the kitchen above, or directly from the garden alcove. There's a wash basin in the room but please note that there's no bathroom on this floor.

garden terrace

The high walled garden is a delight! Despite being in the centre of the village its not overlooked, an attractive and very private space where you can sunbathe, dine al fresco, or read under the shaded alcove. There's a barbecue and fridge, wooden garden furniture, plenty of plants and greenery, and a welcoming little pool (5 m x 2.5 m) with roman steps.

A gate opens to the traffic-free side street alongside the house.

kitchen

From here, of course, it's just a short stroll to Gaucín's many excellent bars and restaurants. One of the classic white villages of Andalucía, it is spectacularly situated in the mountains behind the Costa del Sol in the Serrania de Ronda. There are fabulous views at every turn. Its narrow streets house four little grocery shops and a traditional butcher, an organic food shop, banks (cashpoints) and a pharmacy. For a village of its size, it has an excellent selection of small restaurants and tapas bars.

third bedroom

And there's plenty to do around and about. The mountain countryside of the Natural Parks which surround Gaucín is ideal for walkers, bird watchers and nature lovers; there are lots of fascinating little villages and hilltop towns to explore.

A drive north over the spectacular mountain road will quickly bring you to Ronda with its spectacular gorge and Spain's oldest bullring. The Mediterranean's Costa del Sol is just 30 minutes away, the beautiful beaches of La Costa de la Luz a little further, a 90-minute drive from here.
