Property Description
Gaucín is arguably the prettiest white village in Málaga Province (many would claim that it's the most attractive of all Spain's pueblos blancos). It's certainly a classic, stunningly good looking and with an incredible vantage point from its perch on top of a mountain ridge, 629 meters above sea level.
Just half an hour inland from the Mediterranean Sea, it enjoys sweeping views over the beautiful countryside of the Genil valley below, to Gibraltar beyond and the Rif mountains of North Africa across the shimmering sea.
Situated down a little lane which leads away from the village, yet just two minutes walk from the centre, this modern house enjoys the best of both worlds, close to Gaucín's shops, bars and restaurants yet right on the boundary between village and countryside (see the photo on the top of this page which was taken from close to the middle of the village).
So, it's a quiet and peaceful location which makes the most of the truly wonderful views down the valley to the Sierra de Cristelina, the Rock of Gibraltar, the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa. In the immediate foreground, sheep and horses graze peacefully; the countryside is a joyous carpet of flowers in springtime.
There are a few neighbouring houses but none impede the marvelous southern views.
The house also has a great view up to the village itself, a lovely panorama of whitewashed buildings and terracotta rooftops climbing up the hillside, capped by the remains of Gaucín's old Moorish castle, Castillo del Aguila (the Eagle's Castle) on its rocky outcrop high above.
The house is made available for rental in May, June, July and August each year.
The rental accommodation comprises a very spacious and comfortably appointed open-plan studio apartment with a neat little kitchen corner, dining and sitting area, a sleeping area (twin beds pushed together) and a bathroom (walk-in shower, no bath tub).
The apartment comprises the whole of the first floor of the property and has its own private entrance. In addition to the shaded terrace which runs the length of this floor, guests also have exclusive use of the terrace (partly shaded by a cane awning) on the floor below and exclusive use of the wonderful swimming pool and its sunny terrace surround a few steps further down.
So, there's plenty of room both inside and out, with three different terrace spaces to choose from. The ever-changing views are wonderful wherever you are! Please note that because of the different levels and the number of steps (up and down) to them, we don't think the property suitable for toddlers or anyone who is wobbly on their legs.
White, bright and airy throughout, bold splashes of colour from lovely Moroccan wall hangings, pretty fabrics and wooden furnishings make this a very pleasing place to be.
The gorgeous infinity swimming pool (approx. 8 m x 4 m) is situated at the foot of the house, where you will enjoy wonderful views to Africa as you swim. Adjacent is a sunbathing area and the covered pool house.
Exploring the twisty, narrow streets of Gaucín is always a delight. Its narrow winding streets, hidden alleyways and spectacular views have long been an inspiration for painters and photographers.
It will reveal several restaurants, ranging from excellent international cooking to a handful of simpler establishments offering traditional Andalusian tapas. Local grocery stores stock basic provisions.
There's plenty to do around and about. The mountain countryside of the Natural Parks which surround Gaucín is ideal for walkers, birdwatchers and nature lovers; there are lots of fascinating little villages and hilltop towns to explore.
A drive north over the spectacular mountain road will quickly bring you to Ronda with its spectacular gorge and Spain's oldest bullring. A lovely town, Hemingway's favourite in all Spain, it's brimming with history and interest.
Other excellent day-trip destinations include the historic towns Jerez de la Frontera and Cádiz, both offering good shopping and fine restaurants as well as lots of history and architecture of great beauty. There's Jimena de la Frontera, Casares, Tarifa … and Marbella too. Each has its own unique atmosphere. The magnificent city of Sevilla, one of Europe's great destinations, is little more than a couple of hours from here.
The Mediterranean's Costa del Sol is just 30 minutes away to the south, not to mention a whole plethora of first class golf courses on what is sometimes called the Costa del Golf. The beautiful Atlantic beaches of La Costa de la Luz are a little further, a 90-minute drive from here.
Beautifully situated, this is a very enjoyable place to stay.
