Property Description
Gaucín is a picture-postcard village full of superb, beautifully renovated properties. This fabulous house is the best of them all.
Not only is it immaculate and very stylish, it also has bags of charm. History and tradition have been carefully respected in a make-over of genuine quality and exemplary good taste to create a very special home, one which is full of interest and, at the same time, sublimely relaxing. It's wonderful!
In the heart of the village, the house overlooks beautiful countryside with views down to the Mediterranean, the Rock of Gibraltar and the Rif Mountains of Morocco across the sea. There's something quite magical about its location; down a little side passage just a couple of hundred metres from the main village street, unless you have been inside you wouldn't even know it was there.
Not least of its charms is its unconventional layout, rambling here there and everywhere on different levels, everything connected together by little stairways, both inside and out.
Described by one guest as "like a Tardis", just to wander around the property is an adventure in itself, one which reveals delight after delight.
The entrance hall leads through to a spacious 'arcade' (for want of a better word), an unusual but lovely, wide, long hallway which is a room in itself, with comfy seating and an antique wood burner. Its special feature is a series of huge, semi-circular ornate metal and glass doors which run along its entire length and which open to the dining terrace and gardens outside.
At its far end, the spacious kitchen is fully equipped with quality appliances, everything you could possibly need to prepare magnificent gourmet fare.
Stairs go up from the 'arcade' to two of the bedrooms, both absolutely beautiful double bedrooms with exquisite en-suite, walk-in shower rooms. The beds are real quality and furnishings are classic antiques. There is a strong Moorish influence in the decoration too, as indeed there is throughout the house, exemplified here by the lovely archways which open to the classy, marbled bathrooms.
One has a king-sized double bed, the other has a queen-sized four poster. It's difficult to choose between them because they are both so gorgeous! Both have French window balcony views over the gardens to the village with its castle (lit up at night) high above.
Back down to the 'arcade' and, at the opposite end from the kitchen, a flight of steps takes you down to a really splendid living room (it can also be accessed from the pool and from the gardens). A huge room, it's light and airy with double balcony windows running its entire length and at the far end. Views are pretty good from here, too.
Full of colour, it's a delightful room with plump white armchairs and sofas set off against Moroccan rugs, intricate fabrics and wall hangings, colourful artwork, pretty cushions and classic furniture pieces. An enormous, antique, wood-carved day bed offers alternative comfort.
At one end, the attractive dining table comfortably seats eight; at the other end there's an LCD satellite TV, DVD and a quality music system to enjoy, plus lots of CD's, cassettes and DVD's to choose from.
A few steps lead up from the living room, under an Arabic ceiling to a cosy nook of the house where there's the third bedroom, a single, and a Moroccan style, walk-in shower room alongside.
Next to the living room there is also a small kitchen (it's the orginal kitchen and still functions perfectly OK), although it's usually surplus to requirements these days since the new kitchen was installed.
Returning again to the 'arcade', stairs go up on this side of the house to the fourth, master bedroom - another very pretty room with its queen-sized double bed, quality Moroccan artifacts and antique furnishings. The en-suite bathroom has a shower over a bath tub. Views from this bedroom extend beyond the dramatic Crestellina Ridge to the Mediterranean.
Also on this first floor (which can also accessed by steps up from the garden dining terrace), immediately above the living room is an equally huge room which has been converted into a stunning yoga and relaxation studio. It's difficult to say which is the most impressive, its beautiful, polished oak floor or its lovely beamed ceiling!
Sliding glass doors right across the far end of the room open to a delightful railed, furnished terrace. Views from here are far and wide.
Outside is every bit as good as inside. The long dining terrace has a table for ten and is a great place to eat al fresco at any time of day or night. There is casual seating too, further along this terrace with its lovely weathered terracotta tiles and lush greenery all around.
It overlooks the gardens below and to the side, richly planted with flowering shrubs and lots of mature trees - citrus, bougainvillea, jasmine, plumbago, palm, avocado and olive - which create a beautiful haven of green, shady tranquility.
It's amazing how private it all feels: despite being in the centre of the village, it's more like being in the middle of the countryside.
With different areas and different levels, it's a garden that simply invites you to disappear into it. You will discover a hammock casually slung in the trees here, an ornate fountain there, a leafy barbecue area at the bottom of the garden.
A path leads around, past the living room, to the azure blue waters of the swimming pool (9.5 m x 4.5 m. with a salt filtration system) and its terrace surround. This is a real suntrap, enjoying sunshine from dawn until dusk, and also offers fabulous views, both across to the village and down to the coast. A surrounding wall gives privacy.
Not least of the attractions here is that you are right in the heart of one of Andalucía's classic white villages. Its narrow winding streets, hidden alleyways, spectacular views and fabulous light have long been an inspiration for painters and photographers. For a village of its size it has an excellent selection of restaurants and tapas bars.
There's been many a holidaymaker who has intended to travel around Andalucía only to find that staying put in Gaucín is all they ever wanted to do! And it's great for older children who can just wander out and explore the village safely on their own.
There's plenty to do a little further afield: wonderful mountain scenery all around, breathtaking views and fabulous walking, scenic drives to pretty villages and old fortress towns, including a wonderful drive over the moors and mountains to historic Ronda. Just half an hour away, to the south, lie the beaches and golf courses on the Costa del Sol.
Much more than just a rental property, this is a very special and unique home. As one client said, "we enjoyed every single minute of it. It is a stunning house decorated with exquisite taste. A jewel. The whole family loved it!"
