Property Description
This attractively converted farmhouse has a fabulous setting in a great location. In the midst of some of Andalucía's most glorious countryside, situated on the ancient trading route between Antequera and Ronda, it is an easy, 40 minute drive from here to Málaga airport.
On its own 30 acre hillside estate, it looks out to sweeping views over lush valleys to the magnificent mountain scenery beyond, the peaks of La Sierra de las Nieves spreading across the horizon as far as the eye can see. It's as serene and perfectly peaceful as a place can be.
Accessed by a farm track (in pretty good condition) which winds through the beautiful countryside, it passes through the farmyard of your nearest neighbour, some ¾ km away, before climbing the gentle slope up to the villa.
Here you are just 10 minutes drive from the whitewashed village of Casarabonela. Beyond, a fabulous road climbs high up and over the mountains before descending to Ronda, one of the most picturesque routes in Spain. It's just a 50 minute drive away as are, heading south, coastal hotspots like Marbella and the sandy beaches of the Costa del Sol. Even closer to hand is Andalucía's very own Lake District, an area of outstanding beauty, dramatic gorges and turquoise blue lakes.
With acres of space, privacy and beauty all around, the villa also offers a high level of comfort, delightful gardens and a gorgeous swimming pool. It's a perfect year-round escape. Rebuilt by its British owners about five years ago, here you will enjoy the best of both worlds … real rural charm and proper modern comforts.
From the large parking area on one side of the villa, an extensive and well kept lawn sweeps around the front, dotted here and there with old olive trees, a big palm tree, a lemon tree, yuccas and flowering shrubs. Flower beds add joyful colour to what is already a wonderful scene. There's nothing but beautiful hills and countryside all around.
The lawn extends on beyond the house, leading to steps which take you down to the pool and its wide terrace surround. This is a magnificent spot, the big pool (10 m x 6 m) at its centrepiece, the views far and wide. There's a cane-covered al fresco dining area with night lighting at one end, the barbecue handily placed alongside. If you wish, it's easy to take the fridge from the apartment and plug it in here, to keep your poolside drinks deliciously cool.
On the grass surround beyond the pool, a giant trampoline offers a bit of fun for more agile family members. The less energetic will no doubt simply wile away happy hour after happy hour taking the sun on one of the quality sunbeds, drinking in the views beyond the flower-festooned, landscaped rock gardens that clamber up to the side. The pool has wide entry steps at the shallow end; at the other end it's deep, 2.5 metres. There is a pool shower.
At the side of the villa there's another terrace area, this one shaded by a mature grape vine. Here there is a table tennis table. Other things for the children to enjoy include, perhaps, a visit to the neighbouring farm to see their animals and there are also lots of children's games, books and DVD's indoors too. For those who prefer more sedate activities there is a boules pitch.
A wide, covered verandah runs along the front of the villa providing plenty of space for outdoor eating (there's a large wooden dining table seating 12 at one end) and there's another barbecue. Further along comfy wicker and wooden chairs offer another relaxing area. Great weather, amazing views, sunsets, shooting stars …
Inside is every bit as good as outdoors. The huge, double height living / dining room / kitchen is casual, comfortable and has a great feeling of space. A busy, bustling kitchen area at one end has all mod-cons including an American style fridge freezer with drinks dispenser, a huge electric oven and a 5 ring gas hob, microwave, dishwasher et al. The utility / laundry room which leads off to the rear has another fridge so you can keep well stocked up.
Next to the kitchen area, the rustic wooden dining table comfortably seats twelve guests, a couple more at a pinch. Beyond, the room opens up into a big living area with comfy sofas and armchairs gathered around the coffee table in front of a massive log burner. Central heating and double glazing throughout the property augment this splendidly efficient stove making the house perfect for winter breaks too.
Light floods in from huge picture windows (3 metres tall) which extend high up the eight metre living room walls, designed to make the best of the amazing views. There is a music system and WiFi internet connection.
Decoration is simple and casual, entirely in keeping with its rural, rustic past and present: cosy and uncluttered yet stylish, with some lovely, eye-catching details which the owners have carefully added to make it a real home from home.
Next to the living room there's a TV / Games room with Freeview satellite TV (BBC, ITV etc), a DVD player and a decent collection of DVD’s, plenty of children’s games and lots of books.
Beyond, a corridor leads through to the six bedrooms (including one which is a self-contained apartment) and four bathrooms. All of the bedrooms have comfortable beds, good bed linen and ceiling fans.
The master bedroom is spacious and makes the best of the fabulous views, its large doors opening to the terrace and gardens at the front of the house. Attractively furnished, it has a king-sized double bed and a smart en-suite bathroom with a large walk-in shower (with huge shower rose) as well as a bath tub.
At the far end, the self-contained apartment is accessed from inside through one of the twin bedrooms but it also has its own external entrance from the side terrace (where the table tennis is). For extra privacy it can be separated from the rest of the house simply by locking the door in-between.
It has a little sitting area with a wood burning stove, a compact kitchenette (with a 4 ring hob, electric oven, fridge and washing machine) alongside, and a double bedroom with en-suite bathroom (shower over the bath tub).
There are four twin bedrooms, each of them a good size, neatly but unpretentiously furnished. Each has its own colour theme. One of them has an en-suite walk-in shower room (with huge shower rose), the other three share a bathroom between them. This has both a walk-in shower (again with a massive shower rose) and a bath tub.
The guest book is full of glowing compliments. Such as, "A wonderful week of luxury, sunshine, great company in a stunning setting - perfection!" and "What a fabulous villa; not to mention the setting. We've had a lovely time just lounging around, made all the more enjoyable knowing this is a family holiday home - it's been a real treat to be here".
Others include "We had a fabulous time. Perfect setting, we've enjoyed barbecuing, swimming in the pool and long walks in the beautiful countryside. It really feels like a family home". And one more: "Thanks for the opportunity to see 'Real Spain', the views from this lovely farmhouse are breathtaking - we kept seeing new things every day! The sound of the bells and the sight of the sheep running down the hill were a wonderful enhancement to this beautiful, spacious, comfortable home - thank you".
There are plenty more!
Around and about there's a wealth of things to see and do. Seven kilometres away, the pretty village of Casarabonela retains its traditional charm but is well served with shops and amenities. It has a population of 2,500.
You will find all your daily needs in the shops there, fresh vegetables, meat, fish, bread, as well as a chemist, a couple of banks and plenty of places to eat tapas and good local food. There is an excellent restaurant even closer, at the end of the track to the farmhouse, Rural Caicune, which serves delicious food.
There is fabulous mountain scenery to explore - as diverse as the lakes of El Chorro, only half an hours drive from here, the moon-like landscapes of El Torcal Natural Park near Antequera (an hour away), the stunning peaks of the Serrania de Ronda, the Sierra de las Nieves and the Grazalema Natural Park. Anyone who enjoys walking, riding, swimming, canoeing or quad biking will be in their element here.
There are a number of golf courses on the coast, two within 40 minutes drive, Lauro Golf and Alhaurin Golf, both near Alhaurin el Grande. The beaches, fish restaurants and nightlife of the Costa del Sol beckon beyond. And don't ignore Málaga itself, particularly the old town. The covered market and the Picasso museum are wonderful.
Wherever you head off to, you will return to a real family home in a perfect and very authentic Andalusian countryside setting. Here peace and happiness are the order of the day.
