ZA67 Traditional old Moorish house in Bubión

Granada, Las Alpujarras, Bubión

Tradition and tranquillity in Las Alpujarras

Just below the church, in the oldest part of this classic Moorish mountain village, here one is transported back to the Spain of days long gone by ...

With its huge chestnut beamed ceilings, terracotta floor tiles and wobbly walls it's a classic example of traditional Alpujarran architecture

The high mountain villages of Las Alpujarras clamber down the steep mountain sides with little cobbled streets running through a maze of little houses which have been built on successive levels.

Bubión is no exception and at the very bottom, just below the church and the village plaza, is the oldest and most traditional quarter of the village, “Barrio Bajo”.

It is here, that you will find this lovely old Moorish house which has been restored and extended to create a spacious home on three floors. The historical style has been retained, with its huge chestnut beamed ceilings, terracotta floor tiles and white-washed walls, but now enhanced by modern comfort and facilities.

The house is now a protected building, an excellent example of the traditional architecture of Las Alpujarras.

From the snows to the sea

The south-facing views take in the broad sweep of surrounding mountain majesty, the shimmering Mediterranean and Morocco far beyond.

Built entirely in stone by the Berbers who settled these villages long ago, it is at least six hundred years old and stands on a natural foundation of rock.

The advantages of being at the bottom of the village are immediately evident – no traffic, countryside all around and uninterrupted views of the beautiful Poqueira Ravine which extend to the Mediterranean Sea.

The only disadvantage is that it’s a bit of a climb up to the top of the village where the shops, bars and restaurants are located. Mind you, you can drive up if you are feeling lazy!

With two terraces (one a huge roof terrace) there is no excuse for not indulging in this magnificent Alpujarran setting. Inside there is plenty of space too, with two large bedrooms and a generous sized open-plan living room / kitchen / dining room.

We loved it

"We loved the house in Bubión and the whole atmosphere and friendliness of the village. I could quite easily have never come back to England!"

Although very much part of the village, you nevertheless feel hidden away from the rest of the world here in this wonderfully rustic abode.

One is transported back to the Spain of days long gone by. All around is glorious nature: chestnut, walnut, and oak trees, cherry and mulberry too. Here and there you will come across the locals tending their “huertos” (little vegetable gardens), perhaps leading a small flock of goats or sheep to new pastures or returning home from a day’s toil in the fields along with their mules.

The scenery is majestic, the air crisp and clean and summer temperatures are always a few degrees lower than elsewhere in Southern Spain because of the altitude.

In other words, it’s just perfect!

The south-facing views down the Poqueira Valley are fabulous, encompassing the rural bliss of the surrounding mountains which sweep down to the shimmering Mediterranean with Morocco beyond.

The walk down to Pampaneira which starts from the Church is one of the (many) great walks of the Alpujarras. We doubt you will want to leave. But if you wish to explore further afield, the Mediterranean coast is an hour away and Granada only a little more.

A typical comment from clients, “we loved the house in Bubión and the whole atmosphere and friendliness of the village. I could quite easily have never come back to England!”
