ZC11(3) Holiday cottages for couples – Casa Trasmontana

Cádiz, Western Costa del Sol, Pelayo

Africa is so close you feel you can almost touch it!

Three little self-catering holiday cottages for couples, they share pretty gardens and a view to die for, across the Straits of Gibraltar to Morocco ...

The view from here, across the Straits of Gibraltar to Africa is one of the most sensational in the whole of Spain.

It’s three kilometres from the road, a long track, but when you arrive here it’s more than worth that minor inconvenience. The view from here, across the Straits of Gibraltar to Africa is one of the most sensational in the whole of Spain.

Africa is so close you feel that if you reached out you could almost touch it!

Ships pass through the Straits of Gibraltar, moving silently across your line of vision – which takes in a huge panoramic sweep of the Moroccan coast, the street lights of Ceuta and Tangiers twinkling clearly beneath the huge rocky crags of the Rif mountains.

It’s a magical little corner of our world, quiet and attractive countryside all around, long-horned red Retinto cattle ambling contentedly between the trees, flocks of migrating birds circling overhead. The Rif Mountains on one side of the Straits, the Rock of Gibraltar equally prominent on the other.

The green hills of Tarifa

Forests of cork oak and wild olive, long-horned cattle ambling contentedly between the trees ... this is the backdrop to the stunning, panoramic views.

rental cottage Tarifa views Africa

You are still in Europe yet just about as close as it’s possible to be to Africa (it’s just 14 kilometres away).

Set in the green hills of Tarifa, within the Alcornocales Natural Park, forests of cork oak, wild olive trees, creeping clematis and wild roses are the backdrop to this stunning, panoramic view across the sea to Morocco’s wild coastline.

Nothing will disturb your idle revelry except, perhaps, some birdsong, a fox barking in the distance or the ships’ horns blowing as they sail along the Straits on their way to the open ocean.

For those seeking a little more action, there are plenty of countryside pursuits to be enjoyed, walking, birdwatching and horse riding – as well as the more obvious beach and seaside pursuits.

Perfect for couples

All three cottages have just one bedroom and children are not accepted here, making it a perfect retreat for couples.

The whole property comprises the owner’s house, a small rental cottage alongside and, just below, two more, adjoining rental cottages.

All three cottages have just one bedroom and children are not accepted here, so it really is a perfect retreat for couples.

ZC11(1) Casa Luna and ZC11(2) Casa Sol

These two adjoining cottages look out over the lawn and flower gardens to the swimming pool and beyond, of course, to that magnificent vista.

Each has it’s own shaded terrace area at the side planted with mature shrubs. Wisteria clambers attractively over the terrace pergola.

Decoration and furnishings are simple but cheerful. All on one floor and quite compact, each has a living room with lots of big windows looking out to the view, a little kitchen corner at one end. The double bedroom and bathroom to the rear. They are equipped with satellite TV, radio-CD players and heating.

Pretty gardens

The country gardens and extensive lawn sweep down to the infinity swimming pool ... and that magical view across the sea.

ZC11(3) Trasmontana

This is the most recent of the three, built above “Luna” and “Sol”. It is more spacious, attractively fitted out and finished.

There is no special view to speak of from inside the cottage but exterior steps go up to a little roof terrace, a marvellous place to sit and survey Africa, the sea and the passing ships heading both to Morocco and out into the vast ocean.

Light pours into the stone-floored living room, which is partly wood-panelled. Wood has also been effectively used in furnishing the decent-sized kitchen alongside.

The sitting area is divided off from the bedroom (with en-suite bathroom) by a glass-paned wall of checkered opaque and transparent design.

Guests staying here also share the gardens and pool with guests at “Casa Luna” and “Casa Sol”.

Here you look out to a panoramic sweep of the Moroccan coast beneath the huge rocky crags of the Rif mountains. You feel you can almost touch it.

Beyond the cottages, the pretty country gardens and extensive lawn sweep down to the infinity swimming pool (shared by all guests) and that indescribable view across the sea.

At some time during your stay you will surely be tempted to walk past the pool and carry on down the slopes below the property (it’s a two kilometre path, a bit tricky in places) to the small, rocky but picturesque bay where you can swim or fish, or just carry on marvelling at the view of Africa.

There’s lots to do and see close at hand: Tarifa (20 minutes from here) is the surfing capital of the South Atlantic and lots of fun. Immediately beyond are the long stretches of white sandy Atlantic beaches on the Costa de la Luz, there’s Gibraltar ‘around the corner’, the white villages of inland Cádiz to explore, windsurfing, golf, riding et al.

And there’s always the option of a day trip to Morocco … fast ferries leave regularly from both Algeciras and Tarifa, it’s a wonderful trip (especially the longer, three hour trip from Algeciras to Tangier), the ships often accompanied through the Straits by dolphins and even whales. For those in a hurry, the fast ferry from Tarifa takes just 35 minutes. When you step ashore, you will certainly know that you are in a different world …

Or you can stay right here – at the base of the Pillars of Hercules, the meeting points of Europe and Africa, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea – watching the ships passing silently across the deep blue sea, the massive peaks of the Atlas Mountains rising up dramatically beyond.

Where one continent ends and another begins … there are worse places in the world to re-charge your batteries!
