Villa Description
Although close to the busy market town of Órgiva, this house is in Las Barreras, a small hamlet located on its outskirts. Convenient for all shops, banks, restaurants and bars, you are in the countryside amidst olive groves and vegetable gardens. There is definitely a rural feel on the approach to this cheerful holiday villa.
The road to the house is a tarmacked track, easy for any hire car, but a bit rough in places. On either side of the road are neighbours' cortijos (country houses) growing flowers, fruit trees and olive. You might even see an old mule or two. The villa is at the end of a branch of this road and it's very quiet. There's ample parking for three or four cars at the entrance to the house, on the property itself. Leave your car there and walk through the Mediterranean garden beds to the front patio of your holiday home.
The house was originally a working farm, parts of it are between 150 and 200 years old so it is steeped in character. The property has been restored and decorated with its farmhouse roots in mind: simple and uncluttered. Tiled floors complement the whitewashed walls and original art. The whole effect is spacious and light-filled.
Access to the interior can either be from the front patio area through French windows in to the spacious loung, or through the large, sunny hallway. The hall is a room in itself; it's a suntrap and perfect for settling down with a good book. There is also an extra bed here which can be a comfortable day bed, or the room can be used as another bedroom. To the left of this sunlounge is a double bedroom decorated in a modest, rustic style. Although not en suite, there is a bathroom next door which has a smart, walk-in shower cubicle.
From the South facing patio you can enter the house through french windows and directly into the living room. This is a beautiful room overlooking the pool, full of light and open to the dining area at the far end, this then leads into the open plan kitchen. Unlike the older parts of the house, this room is very modern and has been newly refurbished with large windows and ceiling skylights. One can sit in comfort and watch the children playing by the pool, or at the distant terraces of olive and almond trees. There’s a four-seater sofa, comfy armchairs, a coffee table and large screen TV (with the main UK channels) Internet is available via an ethernet cable and there’s good wifi coverage.
The dining area is at the far end of the living room with a large table seating eight, this is next to the open-plan kitchen. The whole layout makes for very easy mealtimes with ample work surfaces and a breakfast bar with barstools. The kitchen is well equipped with masses of crockery and kitchen utensils, plus a hob, oven, dishwasher, two fridges (a second on the back porch) and washing machine on the back patio.
There are three large bedrooms, together they can accommodate nine people and are flexibly furnished to accommodate mixed groups and families with ease. The two large suites are suitable for couples who are happy to share with their children, or for groups of people who are happy to share. There is also a single bed in the sun lounge which allows for a tenth person, and a travel cot which will fit comfortably into either of the suites as necessary.
THE ROJO SUITE: This large L-shaped bedroom is reached from the hall and also has access to the living room via french windows. It is pretty and feminine, decorated in muted turquoise and white with warm red-toned bedspreads and cushions. This bedroom has en suite facilities with a walk-in overhead shower. The bed is a queen-size double and can be semi-screened off from the two single beds (suitable for two youngish children) by a lacy curtain. It’s an equally great room for a family group, or close friends who know each other well.
THE AZUL SUITE: is also large and L-shaped with three single beds and an en suite bathroom with bathtub. This lovely room is also decorated in blue and white, with blue patterned morrocan fabrics and cushions with splashes of yellow and gold. Two of the singles (option for a king-size bed) can be semi-screened off from the single bed by a lacy curtain. There is a stunning bonus to this room, there are French windows which lead out onto the large back garden, a beautiful more private space with two patios and comfortable garden furniture. This garden has more shade in the morning, a perfect spot for a quiet coffee away from the hubbub around the pool.
The third double room is off the sun lounge (as mentioned earlier) and next to the ‘house’ bathroom which has a walk-in shower. This room is also tastefully decorated and furnished, and has a lockable door which leads to the adjacent Rojo Suite. This door can remain unlocked if guests wish, for example if both rooms are being used by parents and children.
Two other bedrooms are located off the living area: one is a double bedded en suite room with a shower, the other is a twin bedded room with a simple, calm aspect. The twin bedded room does not have en suite facilities.
All the beds are made up with good quality bedlinen. Extra pillows and blankets are provided in the chest in the hall for guests to use if they wish. All rooms have the benefit of fly screens so windows can remain open for the breeze.
The pool terrace is close to the house, down a short flight of stone steps and is surrounded by the garden. With all the flowers and trees it is a lovely place to relax in either sun or shade. And it's not far from the kitchen so drinks and snacks are within easy reach! The good sized pool (9m x 4.5m) has an ionising system so minimal chlorine is used. Sunbeds with cushions, parasols, chairs and convenient small tables are provided. The front patio, facing the pool and next to the living room, has a table and chairs for al fresco dining with views of the stunning mountains. This is a lovely place to sit in the evening with a glass of wine to watch the sun set over the mountains. A truly perfect spot for relaxing and reflecting on another beautiful day in the Alpujarras.
The location of this villa is ideal for all aspects of a Spanish holiday: cuisine, culture, beach life, nature and history.
Let's start with this region's food products. Freshly grown vegetables and fruit are in abundance. The taste of a local tomato is second to none. A bit of salt and olive oil drizzled over the top, is a simple and oh-so-tasty tapas. Add a slice of regional cheese, fresh baked bread, glass of red...Perfection! Of course, there's always the renowned, mountain-cured Trevelez ham which is a 'must try', preferably in the village of Trevelez itself, a short drive away and an interesting day visit.
Other mountain villages to explore are Pampaneira, Capileira and Bubion. These white villages are remnants from the Alpujarra's Moorish past. The picturesque streets with their flowerpots and houses of Berber design are delightful to stroll around and photograph. Handicrafts of wicker work, textiles and hand-woven rugs make original souvenirs.
Half an hour's drive away is the Costa Tropical and its Mediterranean resort towns Salobreña, Almuñecar and Nerja. Different towns offer different beaches, gently shelving shingle, rocky coves, wide sands and smart marinas.
The Costa Tropical offers a variety of eating experiences, from fresh grilled sardines on the beach to more sophisticated restaurant fare. Water sports are catered for: boat trips and scuba diving can be organised.
Other activities which can be arranged are horse riding, mountain biking and hiking. Guided walks are an ideal way to get to know the area. Take a walk with a local guide whose expertise on Alpujarran plant and animal life add another dimension to a day in the country.
For another side of Spanish life, a trip to Granada is less than an hour away. The world-famous Alhambra just cannot be missed. Be sure to book tickets in advance to see the Nasrid Palaces and wonder at the rich civilisation that was Al-Andalus. The Albaicin district is close by the Alhambra, and with its gypsy roots and flamenco connections, even the busking street guitarists are maestros.
The English owners of this house have lived here for many years and love the area. Although on site, they are out of sight, but are more than willing to assist in any way to make your experience of the Alpujarras the best it can be.
