Villa Description
This unpretentious little house is situated in a quiet street on the edge of Mecina, one of the smallest white villages of the ancient Moorish district of La Tahá in the high Alpujarras. Life goes on in an unhurried and peaceful way here.
The house is on two floors. On the ground floor a cosy living room opens through wide doors to a secluded garden dominated by a lovely willow tree. The first floor has two nice little terraces with views to the mountains and over the typical, flat roofs of the village.
Although mostly new it includes many of the attractive features of traditional architecture of the area, Andalusian handcrafted tiles, terracotta floors and heavy wooden beams. Decoration and furniture are simple but tasteful.
Notwithstanding that the owner (a charming and unobtrusive Spanish woman) lives in an adjoining part of the property, it is nevertheless an excellent choice for a quiet and comfortable holiday retreat in the mountains.
All around, there are the spectacular mountains, valleys and gorges of La Alpujarra to explore, as well as its many charming little villages. Right in the centre of the High Alpujarras, many of the best walks pass through or near by. It's superb walking country, whether you want to embark on challenging, high mountain routes or just a stroll through the leafy greenery along the path to the next village.
There are lots of locally run courses and activities, too, from painting and pottery to flamenco and horse riding.
Nearby Pitres (three kilometres away) has several bars and restaurants, a small hotel and a decent supermarket. There is a bank, a clinic and a pharmacy along with a few other shops.
Friday morning is market day in the plaza where fresh produce, clothes and crafts can be bought.
Just outside Pitres there is a small camping site with a gorgeous public swimming pool, a fun place to be in the summer. If you prefer a little more night time action, more touristy villages such as Bubión and Capileira are a short drive away.
Further afield, the city of Granada with the Alhambra Palace and its old Moorish streets is little more than an hour away by car. It takes a little less to get to the Costa Tropical with its beaches, bars and seafood restaurants.
