Review Icon"As one of a few very lovely places, this has to be one of the loveliest - fabulous for relaxation and recreation. This outstripped our expectations, even with the great description. All facilities are kept very clean and fresh. It is very peaceful and the setting and elegant buildings have been lovingly and tastefully designed affording almost total privacy and unenforced encounters with other guest (very limited numbers) so that you feel that you have free run of the pool, gardens. there is also easy mountain walking with fabulous views. We all enjoyed it as an adult family of four and without being disturbed by younger families or other, single guests. ZA37 is easily reached, nestling in its own valley and water sources and providing an excellent base to visit villages nearby, cultural sites as well as beaches. It would be hard to recommend this place more highly. "

Villa Description

The farmhouse estate

"Exceptionally peaceful, surrounded by mountians and far reaching views. Spectacular walks to waterfalls and much more, all on your doorstep. If you like peace and quiet and hiking in the mountains, this is the place to be".

This magnificent farmhouse, four kilometres from the pretty village of Pitres, is situated high in the mountains (1,450 metres above sea level) at the end of a forestry track.

Set in a 17 acre estate, completely on its own with nothing but gorgeous mountain terrain all around, the vast views which opens up in front of you are fantastic, over the southern Sierras to the Mediterranean Sea beyond.

Designed by a renowned expert on classical Moorish work, the cortijo (farmhouse) is built in traditional style entirely from mountain stone. It is surrounded by very attractive gardens which include a 10 metre diameter circular swimming pool (2.6 m deep all round) and bathing terrace.

It's a delightfully quiet place. Hidden courtyards and patios provide sanctuaries of shade and greenery, others offer privacy in the sun. The gentle murmur of a spring or fountain never seems far away.

Fantastic, amazing!

"This mountain retreat was all we had hoped for and more. Our accommodation was very well thought out, very comfortable and private. We absolutely loved it and will definitely stay there again".

There are five apartments, each of them quite separate and private.

They are a little different in design and in facilities offered but all have been decorated and furnished to the same high standard, with handcrafted cupboards, finely detailed woodwork and Arabic tile work. WiFi internet and satellite TV come as standard.

Four have one bedroom (some also have a double sofabed); the fifth has two bedrooms (one double and one twin).

This apartment, "El Tinado", is described in more detail below.

The owner, a master carpenter and who built this magnificent place from scratch over the past 18 years, has an apartment here too. Clients are nothing but fulsome in their praise of his friendly hospitality, advice and local knowledge. As one guest said, "he was always on hand to offer advice on the local area, but was never intrusive - a perfect balance."

What a wonderful experience

"So peaceful. A perfect spot in the middle of the Sierra Nevada. The owner was so helpful, the apartment was cleaner then my mother's house, hard to do! The property was beautiful, the views just breathtaking".

The gardens are beautiful and so, too, are the views, down to the Sierras de Lújar and Contraviesa with the Mediterranean Sea beyond. On a clear day it's possible to see Morocco, far away across the sea.

To the north, the peaks of Mulhacen and Veleta, snow-capped for much of the year, dominate the rugged mountain scene.

The pool area is situated on one side of the farmhouse, where it cannot disturb any of the guests. Although shared with the other guests, it's both intimate and inviting, large enough for all. Note that it's deep, 2.6m - there's no shallow end! Sunloungers and sun shades are set around the pool terrace and the southerly views are fabulous.

Although there are solar panels that begin to warm the water from early spring, because of the altitude here swimming in April and May is only for the brave hearted. But from June onwards it's a real treat, and very refreshing too in the hot, strong summer sun.

Behind the pool, a short track connects to the famed European GR7 footpath which crosses the Alpujarras before continuing all the way to, we are told, Greece ... There are, of course, any number of rather shorter walks in the mountains here, all of them truly wonderful.

Here you are in authentic, high mountain Spain, with hundreds of square miles of magnificent, wild and brooding scenery to revel in. It's incredibly beautiful.

Just birdsong and the distant clinking of goat bells to keep you company, the scents of lavender and rosemary pervading the crystal-clear mountain air.

At night a million stars shine like diamonds from a pollution free, pure sky. It's a brilliant spectacle, a spectacular show which has to be seen to be believed. Once seen, it's one you will never forget.

El Tinado

"We were looking for some peace and quiet and were not disappointed at all. The house is really beautiful; there are flowers everywhere, the views are amazing and the swimming pool is simply delightful".

1 bedroom; sleeps 2

A ground floor garden apartment, traditional in style, it makes maximum use of its 50 m².

It doesn't have a terrace as such but entrance is from the gardens under a typical Alpujarran tinao, or porch, where wicker chairs and a low table are placed for drinks or light meals, or simply to relax in the sun.

And there is a lawned area alongside which it can call its own (as good as private), furnished with sunbeds.

Inside three distinct areas are divided by archways: from the lounge, through a dining area, to the decently equipped little kitchen.

The bedroom has two individual beds (which can be pushed together if preferred). The bathroom has a full-size bath tub with shower over.

The apartment has under-floor central heating.

Stunning!

"There are lovely walks to do in the immediate area, and the villages of Bubion, Capileira and Pampaneira are all within easy reach. We can only say positive things and will definitely return!"

Nearby Pitres (four kilometres away, a 20 minute walk - although 45 minutes back as it's uphill) has a few bars and restaurants, a small hotel, a decent supermarket and a good health food shop. There is a bank, a clinic and a pharmacy along with a few other shops. Friday morning is market day in the attractive plaza where fresh produce, clothes and crafts can be bought.

Five kilometres away, Capileira is the second highest village in Spain, moulded onto the mountainscape 1,435 metres above sea level. Its old streets - happily too narrow for cars - entwine and criss-cross their way a full hundred metres down the side of the gorge.

It's an enchanting maze of ancient dwellings, their cats and geraniums, hens and goats, nooks and crannies, fountains and sudden, dramatic views - both down the valley to Capileira's attractive sisters, Bubión and Pampaneira, and up to the mountain backdrop of Sierra Nevada, where blue skies meet pure white snow cresting the peaks.

And, for something just as rewarding but completely different, you can spend a day out in Granada, one of Spain's great cities, or even take a jaunt down to the Med.

And what better after a day out exploring the hills and dales than to return here, to quality accommodation which combines originality and style with comfort and convenience.

Around and About

This is an excellent base from which to explore this delightful and very beautiful part of Andalucía.

Excursions

  • Here you are high in the mountains, it's walking and horse riding countryside (difficult to beat anywhere in Europe).
  • There are, of course, lovely high mountain Moorish villages to visit, Capileira, Bubión (a couple of kilometres further down the valley) and Pampaneira to name but a few.
  • As well as being very beautiful Moorish villages, all are geared for catering for the walkers and high mountain nature lovers who frequent them; there are bars, restaurants and little shops a plenty.
  • Further down the valley, 40 minutes away, Órgiva is an interesting - many would call it unique - mix of modern Spanish, more traditional Alpujarran characteristics and seekers of an alternative lifestyle. It's an eclectic mix and all the more interesting for it.
  • Here there's everything from supermarkets and pizzerias, banks and building suppliers, camp sites and petrol stations. The weekly (Thursday morning) market is well worth visiting.
  • The Costa Tropical is 1¼ hours away. The closest beaches are at Salobreña. Further along the coast, there's bigger Almuñecar, the beautiful bay of La Herradura and then the much more "international" resort of Nerja at the start of the Costa del Sol. With a strong British presence (you can have a curry here ... ) it boasts 16 kilometres of beaches with powdery sand and sparkling clear water.
  • On this stretch of coast you can choose between fairly isolated, beautiful coves or any one of the different sized resort towns. Cheerful, peaceful, laid back places in the best tradition of the Spanish seaside, a relaxed lunch at one of the beach bars is highly recommended - even in winter if the sun is shining!
  • 1½ hours away, Granada is, of course, a must-see city. Soaring high above is the spectacular back drop of the snow-covered Sierra Nevada mountains. And what a city lies below, a city of classical beauty, the jewel in the Spanish Crown.
  • The mesmerising Alhambra Palace and its exquisite gardens, one of the world's greatest wonders; the narrow, cobbled streets and beautiful walled gardens of the ancient Arab quarter, El Albaicín; the magnificent Cathedral, just one of many superb examples of Renaissance architecture; the caves of Sacramonte, nostalgic legacy of the gypsies.
  • A city which inspired García Lorca, Andalucía's finest poet, it is, above all, a people's city, full of life and colour, energy and fun.
  • On the northern slopes of Sierra Nevada, top class skiing is 1¾ hours drive away. This can be excellent but avoid weekends, when the Granadinos swarm up from the city.
  • If wonderful mountain scenery is your thing, then stay right here in Las Alpujarras! Between the highest mountains in Spain and the Mediterranean Sea, this is a joyous land of sunshine, snowy mountains and some of the most splendid scenery imaginable. From the snows to the sea, there are panoramic views in every direction, from the peaks of Veleta and Mulhacén to the southern sierras and the Mediterranean beyond.
  • The high mountains have their own special beauty: wild and brooding in winter, they come alive in early summer with the scents of wild herbs and the spectacle of tiny, brilliantly coloured flowers, many of them unique to Sierra Nevada.
  • Altitude and sun have combined to evolve more endemic botanical species in Las Alpujarras than in all the rest of Europe. Mountain goats, wild boar, foxes, eagles, goshawks and partridge inhabit the sierras. Mules and donkeys still labour in the fields, sheep and goats graze the hillsides. Trout fill the rivers.
  • The Moors took refuge in these hills and resisted here, maintaining their customs and way of life for well over a hundred years after they were expelled from Granada in 1492 by their Christian conquerors. Las Alpujarras was their final battlefield in Spain.
  • Their legacy is to be seen everywhere: in the distinctive architecture of the mountain villages and in the intricate system of irrigation waterways which they built and which still keep the landscape green and fertile, fed by the snows melting high in the sierras above.
  • The architecture of the little mountain villages is unique in Europe and is identical to Berber originals in the Atlas mountains of Northern Africa. With dwellings characterised by flat roofs and prominent chimney pots, the villages were built by the Berber settlers whose creation imitated and followed the half-natural, half-man made designs of their own mountain lands.
  • Beautiful in their simplicity, the villages appear to tumble haphazardly down the steep hillsides, connected by a labyrinth of narrow, winding cobbled streets. A picture to behold, glistening white in the sun, roses and geraniums spilling from every nook and cranny.

Activities

  • Las Alpujarras offers some of the finest mountain walking, horse riding and cycling anywhere in Europe. There are fabulous riding stables with excellent horses just a kilometre away from the house.
  • And, of course, here you are reasonably well placed to travel to the ski resort high in La Sierra Nevada.
  • On the Costa Tropical, activities on offer include scuba, cavern and technical diving, as well as horse riding and tennis, paragliding, climbing, and abseiling.
