Villa Description
Bubión is a classic example of a Berber mountain village, spectacularly situated on the steep slopes of the Poqueira Gorge.
Before the road came in the 1920's the only access to the village was by way of a mule track which zig-zags its way up the hillside from neighbouring Pampaneira.
Here, at the foot of the village is its original heart, with the Church and the main plaza (village square) prominent.
These days "Barrio Bajo" remains quiet and traffic free, most modern-day developments having taken place at the top of the village, along the main road. A handful of cars park around the village square but that's it, the end of the road, there's nowhere to go from here except back to the top of the village.
This small house is tucked away, around the corner, just below the church and the traditional village washhouse.
Built entirely in stone by the Berbers who settled these villages long ago, it is at least six hundred years old. It's an authentic example of their work - with chestnut beams, slate ceilings, terracotta-flagged floors and whitewashed walls. Now a protected building it is a house of genuine character.
Although very much part of the village, you nevertheless feel hidden away from the rest of the world here.
The south-facing views down the Poqueira Valley are fabulous, encompassing the rural bliss of the surrounding mountains, sweeping across a shimmering Mediterranean Sea to Morocco beyond.
The house, unpretentious and simply decorated, is on two floors.
One enters from a little walkway (where a passion flower vine climbs the wall) to a dining area neatly divided off from the kitchen. A cosy living room with open fireplace leads off.
The main feature of the house is a timbered gallery reached via a wooden staircase. Up here is the double bedroom, from where the gallery leads round to a small furnished bay opening onto a railed balcony.
The advantages of being at the bottom of the village are immediately evident - no traffic, countryside all around and uninterrupted views of the beautiful Poqueira Ravine which extend to the Mediterranean Sea.
As the afternoon rays pour in, it's easy to day-dream of days past when this was the very last stronghold of the once great Kingdom of the Moors.
Bubión is one of the high villages of Las Alpujarras, situated on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, Spain's highest mountain range.
Sitting proudly in the midst of the incredibly beautiful Poqueira Ravine, it is the middle one of the three traditional Moorish villages located here (Capileira and Pampaneira are the others). At an altitude of 1,350 metres above sea level (approximately 4,430 feet), it's a wonderfully dramatic position.
Places don't come much more beautiful than this.
The views in every direction are quite exceptional. To the north, the highest mountains on the Spanish mainland, Veleta and Mulhacén, rise up dramatically to the skyline (for much of the year covered by a thick blanket of snow).
To the south, the Mediterranean Sea glistens beyond the coastal mountain ranges of Lújar and the Contraviersa.
All around is glorious nature: chestnut, walnut, and oak trees, cherry and mulberry too. Here and there you will come across the locals tending their "huertos" (little vegetable gardens), perhaps leading a small flock of goats or sheep to new pastures or returning home from a day's toil in the fields along with their mules.
The Mediterranean coast is an hour away and Órgiva, the main market town of Las Alpujarras, is less than half an hour away. Granada is little more than a one hour drive.
At the top of the village there are a handful of bars and restaurants catering both for locals and the tourists who have found their way up into the mountains. These offer good wholesome food at affordable prices, washed down by local vinos and still-generously poured spirits. A couple have free WiFi connection.
Being in the high mountains it can be cold in winter - and snow does occasionally fall - although it has a special, magical beauty at this time of year too.
But in Spring, summer and autumn the climate is just perfect. The air is crisp and clean, hardly ever humid, and summer temperatures are always a few degrees lower than elsewhere in Southern Spain because of the altitude. But, plenty warm and pleasant enough!
Wonderfully rustic, this is a lovely place for a couple - or a single person - who wants a break from the helter skelter modern world, time to re-charge batteries and enjoy real peace and nature's harmony.
