Villa Description
Spectacularly situated in the beautiful valley of the Rio Guadalfeo, this attractive holiday home and its wonderful, partly wild 2,500 m2 of gardens are surrounded by terraced orchards of mature olive and fruit trees.
It's a fabulous spot, a secluded bowl of beauty which opens up to reveal the dramatic backdrop of Sierra Lújar rising up in the distance.
Completely private and secluded, it's a cortijo (traditional farmhouse) with a very special and private feeling.
The floodlit gardens (part wooded, part lawned) are landscaped on two levels from the natural countryside, with oranges growing all around the filtered, springwater-filled swimming pool (which also has a small splash pool for children). The pool is fenced and gated.
The lush vegetation also includes avocados and spectacular olive trees, many of them several hundred years old. But it's not all wild, verdant nature - there's a nice bit of lawn to run around in, a playground and a barbecue too.
The house is traditional Alpujarran, recently extended, refurbished and decorated throughout. The owner is constantly improving things, maintaining it as a really enjoyable and very popular holiday home.
The living / dining room and both bedrooms have direct access to a delightful terrace which runs along the front of the house.
Partly covered by an ancient vine, this is an ideal spot for sunbathing or simply relaxing, taking in the fabulous fragrance of the orange blossom (in April) and the ever changing colours of the mountains beyond.
Here you are right in the heart of the evergreen Alpujarras (a legacy of the Moors who built the amazingly intricate system of irrigation waterways which keep the landscape green and fertile, fed by the snows melting high in the sierras above). On the fertile, southern slopes of Sierra Nevada, views in every direction are stunning!
They produce their own organic olive oil here and, just about any time of year there will be delicious fresh fruits ripe for the plucking, straight from the trees. Help yourselves!
Inside, the style is traditional Andaluz-Arabic with many features of local craftsmanship: 'Arabic' tile work, beamed ceilings, and a main bedroom carved into the rock behind the house to give the impression of a cosy cave.
It's rustic but well equipped (including WiFi internet access, satellite TV, books and tourist information) and furnishings are decent, tasteful and comfortable. Decor is tasteful and authentic.
Good insulation (walls are two feet thick) and double glazed windows guarantee comfortable winter nights as well as a pleasurable siesta on a hot summers' afternoon. There's air conditioning / heating in the living room as well.
The owner is a professional and cares deeply that his guests enjoy a completely relaxing and refreshing holiday. His hard work has paid off, as his guest book testifies:
"This is a special place to relax and enjoy, an oasis in a world beset by problems. Take in the sunsets and the changing colours and evening shadows over the Sierra De Lujar. Enjoy".
"We were here for two weeks for our honeymoon and its been a little heaven in the Alpujarras. Sitting on the terrace lapping up the sun after dips in the pool, looking at the Sierra de Lujar has been wonderful. The best bit is the tranquillity, sleeping in the cave, lazing by the pool, enjoying the sun and the fantastic views".
"The sounds of the birds, water, the sight of such hills and the glorious scent of lemon and orange blossom".
It's a pleasant and pretty easy 20 minute walk into Órgiva (slightly uphill on the way there, so ... downhill on the way home).
A busy little place but relaxed and picturesque nonetheless, it is situated in a wide river valley which runs between the rugged Sierra Nevada and the coastal mountains (Lújar and Contraviesa) which rise up only to crash down again into the palm fringed beaches of the Costa Tropical. All around the countryside - with its rivers, ancient olive trees and orange groves - is beautiful.
Views are superb, with the often snow capped peaks of Sierra Nevada to the north and the graceful curves of Sierra Lújar dominating the horizon to the south.
Alongside its numerous street cafes and bars, Órgiva also offers small supermarkets, banks, a post office, a small cinema and a 24 hour emergency medical centre. Its Thursday morning market is a thriving affair.
Órgiva is a natural crossroads : four roads depart from here, one linking Las Alpujarras with Salobreña and the Costa Tropical to the south; another heads west, through Lanjarón, leading on to Granada.
A third one, through Torvizcón, takes one through the foothills of La Contraviesa into the remoter villages of the Eastern Alpujarras; the fourth winds up into the Sierra Nevada, ascending to Pampaneira, Bubión, Capileira, Trevélez and the other classical Moorish villages in the high mountains.
Both the magical city of Granada and the beaches of the Costa Tropical are within easy driving distance for day trips, both less than 40 minutes away. The top-class ski slopes in the high Sierra Nevada are only a little further.
But there's also plenty to enjoy right here in the wonderful mountain world of Las Alpujarras. From the snows to the sea, there are panoramic views in every direction, from the peaks of Veleta and Mulhacén to the southern sierras and the Mediterranean beyond.
For the energetic there's wonderful hiking in the mountains, year-round cycling and fabulous horse riding, as well as water-sports and golf on the coast.
Or just stay put. As another guest said, "What a fantastic two weeks in a lovely house surrounded by fantastic views. A little bit of paradise!"
