Villa Description
Owned by a family from Gaucin, this working Finca has been converted into their family summer house. Now the children have grown the house has been made available for rental during the summer months, it’s not luxury, but it's bright and cheerful with a genuinely Spanish country atmosphere. The house is pleasantly unpretentious and welcoming, although the setting must be one of the most privileged rural settings in Andalucia.
Neat and attractive inside, it's outside that's the place to be!
Just half an hours drive from the coast and 10 minutes drive from the charming whitewashed village of Gaucin, this Finca guards a panorama that sweeps over a landscape of oak, cork trees, craggy peaks, valleys and meadows to the faraway sea with Gibraltar usually visible in the distance.
The property is reached by a narrow country track, just 5 minutes drive from the Gaucin to Manilva road, through large metal gates and into a farmland of grape vines, orange, lemon, almond, fig and many other fruit bearing trees.
Sunny, warm and open to the wide blue sky, the perfect place for anyone who want to relax in peace and harmony – far away from the rush of the modern world yet still within easy driving distance of interesting towns and villages for a day or an evening out.
At the front of the house the entrance porch, generous with an eye-catching tile-topped table, large enough to seat all the family and more. A fine spot to enjoy any meal of the day or just to sit back and enjoy the scenery.
Although the house does have a "grand" main entrance through a typical Spanish courtyard and into the living room, I think you will be using the porch entrance, entering directly into a large inviting kitchen. A well equipped kitchen with all you will need to whip up some delicious summer meals.
From the kitchen a door leads through to the master double bedroom with an ensuite shower room.
The other door from the kitchen leads into the living room, the walls built in exposed stone and brick, large sofas arranged around the fire place, this is the place to spend the cooler winter evenings.
Views encompass the wonderful mountain beauty all around extending down to Gibraltar and the Rif Mountains of Morocco beyond.
From the living room a short passage leads to the other two downstairs bedroom - one double and one twin. The second bathroom is also reached from this passageway.
Stairs lead up to a spacious attic room, ideal for the larger children of the family (the stairs have no railing) - This room has two singles and a small double bed. From here a door opens onto a furnished roof terrace, with the most wonderful, ever-changing views, sweeping across the Genal Valley, towards Sierra Crestellina to the east and south to Gibraltar, the Mediterranean and North Africa beyond....
Stratigically placed, just along side the house, offering complete privacy, the pool itself is not enormous but certainly large enough for all the family to dip, refresh and enjoy the delights of long summer days by the pool –
The pool area is kept in true Andaluz style, surrounded by many bright couloured potted geraniums, palm leaves rustling in the breeze, parasols, sun loungers….and if you want to enjoy a snack out of the sun, there’s a covered bar area, complete with bar stools, a double sink, a drinks fridge... It's the perfect place for a refreshing drink, or preparing a snack, while children play in the pool. There’s also a large stone barbecue and an annex building with a washing machine and sink.
In the midst of all this glorious, peaceful countryside, this is one of the most beautiful settings in Andalucía. You will probably be reluctant to venture out, but when you do, you will be delighted by the wealth of things to see and do around and about.
The Mediterranean coast is an easy 30 minutes drive from the villa. The beaches of the western reaches of the Costa del Sol, the nearest to the villa, are much less "touristy" and less congested than those further east. It is still possible to find swathes of empty golden sand here.
Estepona is the nearest of the resort towns on the coast, a little more than fifteen minutes away. Marbella, with all its glitz and glamour, and Gibraltar, take 45 minutes.
Heading inland, the timeless beauty of some of Spain's most impressive Natural Parks awaits you, with lots of other charming towns and villages to discover along the way. Gaucín, just 10 minutes drive, Jimena de la Frontera, Genalguacil and, further to the north, delightful old Ronda and the mountain village of Grazalema are all attractive, lovely places, well worth visiting.
If you are energetic, it's a 3 km walk into Gaucín village, one of the prettiest in all Spain. It still retains its old-world Spanish charm, a delightful tangle of narrow, twisting streets filled with flowers. Add a sophisticated touch here and there (including some excellent little restaurants), close proximity to some of Andalucía's best attractions and its enduringly spectacular views and you have one of the great Spanish rural holiday destinations. Standing high above the village are the remains of its old Moorish castle, Castillo del Aguila (the Eagle's Castle).
The country lane, heading north-west from Gaucin will take you deep down into the valley and to the little pueblo of Colmenar which also has a couple of more-than-decent restaurants.
It is also known as Estación de Gaucín because the fantastic railway between Algeciras on the coast and Ronda, to the north, stops here. Built by the British in the 1890's to enable Gibraltar's garrison officers to escape into the countryside from the coastline's summer heat, it is one of Europe’s great short railway journeys, running through landscapes which offer constantly plunging and spectacular views. Well worth a day out!
Perhaps you will be tempted to try a taste of Morocco - the fast boat from Tarifa to Tangiers takes just 40 minutes. Great fun and a completely different world …
