Villa Description
This country estate house is set in its own vineyards, only ten minutes' drive from the famous city of Ronda. The grounds comprise 3.5 hectares, two if which are given to the owner's grapes for his own bodega (not on the estate).
Originally belonging to a much larger estate, the house has been lovingly restored by the owners. Although renovation was completed in 2008, with all the modern conveniences you would expect, the decor is in keeping with the style of a high class country house.
Access to the house is along a dirt track, a bit rough in places, but nothing an ordinary hire car can't handle. Enter the villa through a traditional-style vestibule with a grand iron gate. From the vestibule turn left through the impressive iron and stained-glass front door to the living/dining area, or turn right, to the kitchen entrance.
The living room has two three-seater sofas arranged around an open fireplace and flatscreen TV. The seating for the large dining table is an antique banquette, originally from a convent and the wonderful patterned floor has been reconstructed from original, reclaimed hydraulic tiles.
The exposed beams perfectly suit the three crystal chandeliers.
On one wall are original oil paintings from times past and in the opposite corner is another cosy seating area with two rocking chairs and two armchairs around a circular table. A corner dresser and a dresser with crockery complete the refined picture.
The living areas and bedrooms, with the exception of the kitchen, have air conditioning. There is central heating throughout the house.
From the living room, walk through into the lovely country kitchen.
The kitchen can be accessed either from the living/dining room or by its own door from the entrance vestibule. The style of the kitchen is reminiscent of one from a grand house a century ago, with its twin butler sinks, quarry tiled floor and marble work surfaces. That said, it is completely modern in all its facilities. It comes fully equipped with ceramic hob and electric oven, microwave, dishwasher and fridge/freezer.
A ground floor cloakroom, with toilet and basin, is conveniently placed at the foot of the stairs. The cloakroom is done out in a rich Moroccan style with geometric arabic tiles and brass fittings.
There is also a full bathroom on the ground floor with a bathtub and shower mixer taps, wc and basin.
Nineteen stairs lead you up to the two first-floor bedrooms. The house has five double bedrooms, two of which have double beds (upstairs master bedroom and the one in its own separate ground floor annexe), three have twin beds which are designed to be zipped together to form doubles if required.
Two of the twin bedded rooms have iron bedsteads, built in wardrobes and quarry tiled floors. One has a direct view to the pool terrace, the other looks out onto the cobbled courtyard.
All bedrooms have en suite bathrooms, with the two on the first floor having baths and bidets, one downstairs with bath only and the other two with showers. The bathrooms are decorated differently but in wonderful colours, each with a Moorish flavour.
The outside grounds are a contrast between the formal garden terrace which surrounds the pool, and the open countryside of cultivated olive groves and vineyards.
The inviting pool is set directly in front of the house in a garden of lavender, box hedges, olives, Mediterranean cypress and palms. There is a dining terrace (seating eight) with a built-in barbecue, shaded under a pergola of wisteria.
Both the garden and pool have nightlighting. Although the property borders onto a very distant, fenced train track, there is minimal disturbance as there are only ten trains a day.
Whilst grape picking season is in September, wine tasting courses can be organised all through the year so that you can learn about and sample the local wines. Please ask in advance.
Four mountain bikes are available which guests are welcome to use.
Staying outside, but close to the main house, is the separate bedroom annexe with en suite bathroom facilities.
The door to the annexe is a big studded, wooden one which opens onto a room with a distinctive arabic ambience. The exposed ceiling beams and the windows with dark wooden shutters give this bedroom an exotic and almost mysterious atmosphere. The bathroom is beautifully tiled and has a walk-in shower, wc and Moroccan bowl handbasin.
All the rooms have been furnished and decorated by the owners themselves, often as a result of travel adventures.
One holiday saw the owners caught up in an impromptu bartering scenario with a gypsy who had a sack of crystal beads. He persuaded them that they were a veritable bargain. The owners bought the beads and with a little patience and imagination were able to make the chandeliers now in the living room. A bargain indeed!
Just before finishing, a little more detail about the two upstairs bedrooms ... Both have king-sized double beds (one being a zipped twin), both have en suite bathrooms and both have lovely wooden floors, so comfy and warm for bare feet. The bedrooms have Juliet balconies overlooking the pool terrace and vineyards beyond. The bathrooms have bathtubs with showers over, wc, bidet and brass hand basins.
The ancient city of Ronda has such a rich history that it would be impossible to take in all its sights in just one day, or for that matter, one week. Known as Izna Rand Onda by the Moors, the town was settled by them in the eighth century, close to an earlier Roman settlement. The town's picturesque narrow streets and whitewashed walls are a link to that Islamic past, further enhanced by Renaissance and Baroque styles which followed centuries later.
Ronda is best explored on foot with plenty of stops for cool drinks and tapas along the way.
The 18th century 'Puente Nuevo' bridge linking the old Moorish quarter with the Mercadillo district is the most famous of Ronda's sights. This is a good starting point for any tour of Ronda.
Nearly as famous is the reputation of Ronda as the birthplace of modern bullfighting (although inhabitants of Sevilla would hotly dispute that). A visit to the bullring is an absolute must, whatever your views on this controversial tradition.
For a complete change of scene, the beaches of the Costa del Sol are near enough for a day trip, and even closer is the natural beauty of the Grazalema National Park.
A stay at this house allows you to sample a rare side of Spain, immersed in a traditional style yet with all modern facilities. The villa is in a peaceful and rural location yet within a stone's throw of an iconic Andalucían city for you to explore.
With this villa you have so many choices, all of them good ones.
