Review Icon"I just wanted to say thanks to yourselves at Rustic Blue and to Manuel, the owner of our rental holiday villa. It was absolutely lovely. Spotlessly clean, everything in good working order, the pool man came every morning so the pool was always lovely to swim in. The villa was gorgeous and the pool and garden had lovely mountain views. The air conditioning in the bedrooms was hardly needed because the evenings were cool and there was always a breeze. The location was great as we could walk in to the beautiful village of Gaucin for groceries and restaurants. We had a wonderful holiday in beautiful Andalucia. We would love to return and will book with Rustic Blue again."

Villa Description

Original features add to the charm

What was once a small farm cottage is now a light, bright holiday home.

Just up a track from Gaucín's main road is this pretty cortijo cottage, sympathetically renovated to be a family holiday home. The dirt track to the cottage is less than a kilometre long and safe to walk, although at night you'll probably need a little torch as it's a country lane. All rooms in this property are on the ground floor.

The cottage was originally a lot smaller and the owners have extended it whilst at the same time keeping many rustic features. For example, the stone wall of the living room, seen here, was the old exterior wall. The kitchen and one double bedroom are part of the original cottage. Renovations were finished in 2006, the end result being the living room, the two bedrooms leading from it and of course, the swimming pool. The mix of old and new works very well and combines comfort with rural style.

What a delightful place to spend the day!

The garden and it's sparkling pool are just made for lazing around in. With the barbecue, even making meals is fun.

The living room is a wonderful space to rest in, it's high ceilings and tall windows create an airy, calm atmosphere. But if you prefer to relax outdoors, then by the pool, on a sunlounger, is the place to be.

At the pool side of the house is a brick built barbecue with a sink and tiled food preparation area. A circular table seating four with a sunshade is close by. The garden overlooks a quiet wooded area and a little lane, ideal for taking a stroll through the trees.

There is plenty of room for parking on the property. Outside and in front of the cottage is a night-lit pergola for al fresco dining with a table seating six and a canopied swing-seat. The house has a private entrance for guests direct to the property, there is another side entrance which goes to the owner's adjacent stables that house his seven horses and an indoor riding arena. A track from the cottage goes past an organic vegetable garden to the stables. Guests are welcome to go and visit the horses.

Cool in summer, warm in winter

The cottage comes with air conditioning and gas central heating, so you'll be comfortable whatever the season.

The kitchen/diner is in a typically rustic Andalucían style with its corner open fireplace, exposed ceiling beams and traditional curtains on the kitchen units. The kitchen facilities are modern though with an electric hob and oven, twin bowl sink, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and microwave. The dining table seats six.

The two main bedrooms are located off the living room. One bedroom has a small, fold-away bed which would be suitable for a child. Both of these bedrooms have en suite bathroom facilities as well as air-conditioning. One room has views to the garden, the other looks out onto the front of the house. The wrought iron bedheads are from a traditional gypsy's forge in Córdoba.

The house has wifi internet and for winter rentals, gas central heating throughout .

An easy stroll to the village

Gaucín has more than it's fair share of good restaurants and cafés. Leave the car at home and sample their hospitality.

The third (and original) cottage bedroom is located off the kitchen and has air conditioning as well as a walk-in shower, bidet and basin. This bedroom is a double, although the antique, brass bedstead may, for modern-day guests' dimensions, feel a little small. It would be ideally suited for two older children, or perhaps one full-sized adult.

Gaucín is one of the prettiest pueblos blancos of Andalucía. High inland from the Costa del Sol in the Serranía de Ronda, it really lives up to its name Balcon de Serranía the 'balcony' of this mountain range. Looking out towards the Mediterranean and North Africa, it has the most marvellous views, no wonder the Romans and the Moors wanted this settlement as a vantage point. The ruined 'Eagle's Castle' at the top of the village was built by these civilizations and it's worth the steep climb to pay it a visit.

More modern and useful amenities in the village include banks (with cash machines), pharmacies and supermarkets, as well as a good choice of eateries, including a delicatessen with regional products. For local colour there is a weekly market as well as the annual fiestas which take place in the first week of August and September.

But there's not only Gaucín to explore. There are plenty of other Spanish sights to enjoy ... Ronda is only 40 minutes' drive away, as are the beaches of the Costa del Sol in the opposite direction.

This cottage is perfect for those who want to spend their days relaxing by the pool and be able to walk home after an evening out in the delightful village of Gaucín.

  • Gibraltar, steeped in history, VAT free shops … and plenty of fish & chips is 1¼ hours away.
  • Tarifa on the southernmost point of Spain is 1½ hours from here. Looking directly across the Straits of Gibraltar to Morocco, Africa is so close you feel that you can almost touch it!
  • Beyond lie mile upon mile of magnificent white beaches on Spain's Atlantic coast, La Costa de la Luz.
  • A taste of Morocco perhaps? The fast boat from Tarifa to Tangiers takes 35 minutes, so you can be exploring the local souks in just a few hours. Fascinating and colourful, it really is a different world.
  • Spain's unique sherry wine region (Jerez and Sanlúcar), is well worth a visit, enhanced no doubt by stopping at one or two of the famous bodegas along the way! Jerez de la Frontera is 2 hours.
  • Cádiz (2¼ hours) continues to evoke the romance, intrigue and mystery of centuries of trade (some legal, some not so) between Europe, Africa and the Americas.
  • One of Europe's most important wetland reserves and bird sanctuaries, the Doñana National Park, is a popular attraction for nature lovers (4 hours). Its enormous variety of bird species include everything from flamingos to imperial eagles.
  • A beautiful road winds over the spectacular mountains to Ronda (45 minutes), with its spectacular gorge and Spain's oldest bullring, Hemmingway’s favourite town in all of Spain.
  • Sevilla takes 2½ hours. It is impossible not to be captivated by its exuberant atmosphere: stylish, confident, ancient and proud, yet also convivial, intimate and fun-loving. If you don't know what alegría means, Sevilla is the place to learn!
  • The fantastic railway between Algeciras on the coast and Ronda, to the north, stops at the little pueblo of Colmenar (20 minutes away). One of Europe’s great short railway journeys, running through landscapes which offer constantly plunging and spectacular views, this is a remarkable and wonderful way to see some of Andalucía's best and most dramatic countryside.
  • There are a plethora of beautiful white villages and hilltop towns to explore and enjoy in the magnificent countryside of the Serranía de Ronda – Jimena de la Frontera, Casares and Genalguacil to name but a few.
  • Nearby National Parks include the fabulous Los Alcornocales Natural Park and the Grazalema National Park, one of the most beautiful tracks of mountain anywhere in Europe. Jagged peaks, gorges, chasms, faults and caves, underground rivers and deep canyons are interspersed, here and there, by some of the prettiest villages in Spain, Grazalema, Zahara, Setenil and the other famous "pueblos blancos".
  • Córdoba and Granada are both 3 hours drive from here
