Review Icon"Three mature couples chose this country house as a base for exploring the "white town" area of Andalusia, Spain. We were very happy with it-plenty of room both inside and out and a few minutes drive from Gaucin, a lovely unspoilt white town. There are 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms although one bedroom is smallish even though it had a twin bed. There was everything we could want as it was obviously set up as a home. We spent every night outside on the patio for meals. It is our practice to eat out during the day and stay home at night so that we don't have to drive in strange areas. The views were great and we decided to add Gibraltar to our list of places to visit around the areas we could see it from the house. We certainly relaxed a lot at the Finca as well as exploring the area."

Villa Description

A real family home

The owner loves to extend and improve the property as his own family grows. There's plenty of room for all generations.

This high quality home is in green countryside, about ten minutes' drive from the village of Gaucín. The owners built the house in 2004 with their own young family in mind so as well as being elegant and tasteful, facilities have been provided for a lot of fun as well!

The owners of the house are a friendly, Spanish family who live on the coast. The villa is a weekend house for them, so you can expect all the facilities to meet the standards of a proper child-friendly home.

The living room is the first room you come to on entering the house, it has a flatscreen TV, DVD, music system and Wifi internet. The living room leads into a dining area with a table seating six. Behind the dining area there is a small cellar (locked, but the owner is happy to provide you on request a selection of wines payable locally on arrival, please ask).

Poolside fun!

The family like nothing better than to entertain friends outdoors. With poolside fun in mind, there's an outside kitchen-bar, big barbecue and music facilities.

The pool terrace with a magnificent pool (14m x 7m, 1 - 3m deep), is a fantastic area for summer time relaxation and play. From the swimming pool are great views to the sea, with the Rock of Gibraltar on the horizon. The pool is accessed by shallow steps.

The terrace comes complete with its own covered kitchen-bar which has a 5-ring gas hob and hotplate, electric oven, sink, dishwasher and fridge/freezer. A big charcoal barbecue and all crockery and cutlery are provided, everything you need for al fresco dining poolside. There's even an iPod docking station behind the bar for your favourite sounds.

At one end of the pool is an open-sided cabaña summer house with lounging furniture and tv. A bathroom is provided behind the outdoor kitchen with shower, wc and washbasin.

Surrounded by nature

The countryside around this villa is woodland, green and pretty, fed by the waters of the Genal and Guadiaro Rivers.

On arriving at the villa there is ample space for parking (room for four to five cars) at the front of the property. Automatic electric gates open to the driveway which leads directly to the entrance courtyard.

Although the house is just off the main road (the only road!) from the coast to Gaucín, it is the most peaceful spot imaginable. There is no one nearby and privacy is guaranteed. The surrounding area is the green Genal Valley with an abundance of birdlife and tree species: holm oaks, chestnuts, olive, almond and citrus fruit trees. The drive from the coast to the villa takes in some wonderful countryside.

The landscape gradually changes from flat fields with grazing cattle to mountain pastures, home to herds of goats. As the road climbs, huge rocky outcrops define the landscape getting ever more dramatic the higher you go. It's not uncommon to see eagles flying overhead, circling on the air currents above the crags.

Gaucín sits perched up high on the mountain and its location has made it perfect as a 'lookout' spot for centuries. Indeed its name comes from the arabic 'Sair Guazan' meaning 'strong rock'. The ruined castle at its summit is known as the Eagle's Castle and although a fortress in Moorish times, its origins date back even further to a Roman settlement.

Wake up and smell the jasmine

With all sorts of decorative plants and shrubs, the veranda is a cool and restful place to sit of an afternoon.

A roofed veranda runs along the length of the house with a dining table (seating 8) as well as a three seater sofa and two armchairs. The veranda is fenced so little ones can't escape to the pool without supervision.

The house looks out onto a well kept, soft lawn and the veranda is planted with bougainvillea and jasmine. In the early morning and late evening the scent is divine.

The entrance courtyard is a lovely space for outdoor eating too. With its palm trees and Moroccan-style lanterns, you are reminded that north Africa is only just across the water. The courtyard has direct access to the kitchen, so bringing out food is quick and easy. You may want to have a barbecue lunch; that's quick and easy too as a Weber charcoal barbecue is at hand.

The kitchen is well equipped with a range-style cooker and an array of pots and pans. A utility room houses a washing machine, two fridges and the ironing facilities.

Separate casitas for space and privacy

The villa has two annexes set apart from the main house; one for the games room, the other for guest bedrooms.

The house also has a separate games casita with billiards, darts and large flatscreen TV with DVD player.

The casita comes complete with bathroom facilities, a bar and a glass fronted woodburner. The main house has central heating for winter rentals.

Two of the bedrooms are on the ground floor. One is the master bedroom with luxury en suite bathroom facilities. The other double bedroom has use of a bathroom opposite.

The bedroom on the first floor is a double with an en suite bathroom.

The two super-king sized bedded rooms are in the separate guest annexe which overlooks the pool terrace and is accessed by steps. All bedrooms except one in this property have flatscreen TVs and DVD players.

So much to enjoy

There's so much to do on holiday here. Gaucín itself is a beautiful pueblo blanco, the beach is close by and the cities of Andalucía are within easy reach.

Gaucín is only a short drive away - or for the more energetic, a 3 kilometer walk through country lanes - and is worth exploring just for itself. The village has banks, a pharmacy and grocery shops covering all the basic needs for a self-catering holiday. Sights to see are the Eagle's Castle, a short (but steep walk) from the village, the 15th century parish church of San Sebastián and the narrow, whitewashed streets blooming with flowers and fountains. There are some good restaurants and cafés here so eating out is a pleasure.

The villa is set in such quiet countryside that you could be a million miles from the busy and bustling costas. In truth a trip to the seaside is under 40 minutes and offers a completely different face of southern Spain.

The beach provides a variety of entertainment from water parks and themed amusements, to glamorous marinas and fine dining. For simpler pleasures, join in with the local population by taking a paseo (a stroll) with an helado (ice cream) or a plate of fresh sardines cooked in the open air at a chiringuito (beach cafe).

For a lively taste of traditional Spain, the cities of Jerez de la Frontera and Ronda are ideal for a day trip. The heritage of sherry, horses and flamenco in Jerez competes with ancient history, the bullring and Hemingway in Ronda. Neither will fail to delight. Just a little further is Sevilla, the capital city of Andalucía.

Excursions

  • La Costa del Sol with its wealth of sandy beaches, sun, fun and nightlife is just 30 minutes away. Resort towns include Estepona (45 minutes) and glitzy, glamorous Marbella (under an hour).
  • Gibraltar, steeped in history, VAT free shops … and plenty of fish & chips is 1¼ hours away.
  • Tarifa on the southernmost point of Spain is 1½ hours from here. Looking directly across the Straits of Gibraltar to Morocco, Africa is so close you feel that you can almost touch it!
  • Beyond lie mile upon mile of magnificent white beaches on Spain's Atlantic coast, La Costa de la Luz.
  • A taste of Morocco perhaps? The fast boat from Tarifa to Tangiers takes 35 minutes, so you can be exploring the local souks in just a few hours. Fascinating and colourful, it really is a different world.
  • Spain's unique sherry wine region (Jerez and Sanlúcar), is well worth a visit, enhanced no doubt by stopping at one or two of the famous bodegas along the way! Jerez de la Frontera is 2 hours.
  • Cádiz (2¼ hours) continues to evoke the romance, intrigue and mystery of centuries of trade (some legal, some not so) between Europe, Africa and the Americas.
  • One of Europe's most important wetland reserves and bird sanctuaries, the Doñana National Park, is a popular attraction for nature lovers (4 hours). Its enormous variety of bird species include everything from flamingos to imperial eagles.
  • A beautiful road winds over the spectacular mountains to Ronda (45 minutes), with its spectacular gorge and Spain's oldest bullring, Hemmingway’s favourite town in all of Spain.
  • Sevilla takes 2½ hours. It is impossible not to be captivated by its exuberant atmosphere: stylish, confident, ancient and proud, yet also convivial, intimate and fun-loving. If you don't know what alegría means, Sevilla is the place to learn!
  • The fantastic railway between Algeciras on the coast and Ronda, to the north, stops at the little pueblo of Colmenar (20 minutes away). One of Europe’s great short railway journeys, running through landscapes which offer constantly plunging and spectacular views, this is a remarkable and wonderful way to see some of Andalucía's best and most dramatic countryside.
  • There are a plethora of beautiful white villages and hilltop towns to explore and enjoy in the magnificent countryside of the Serranía de Ronda – Jimena de la Frontera, Casares and Genalguacil to name but a few.
  • Nearby National Parks include the fabulous Los Alcornocales Natural Park and the Grazalema National Park, one of the most beautiful tracks of mountain anywhere in Europe. Jagged peaks, gorges, chasms, faults and caves, underground rivers and deep canyons are interspersed, here and there, by some of the prettiest villages in Spain, Grazalema, Zahara, Setenil and the other famous "pueblos blancos".
  • Córdoba and Granada are both 3 hours drive from here
