Villa Description

Serene and majestic

Views are spectacular, down to the Mediterranean and the Rock of Gibraltar. Beyond, the peaks of Africa and Europe merge under a deep blue sky.

This is a beautiful house, from top to bottom, inside and out. One befitting its fabulous location, just five minutes drive (about half an hours walk) from Gaucín, one of Spain's prettiest pueblos blancos.

As peaceful a spot as it's possible to find, a huge panorama of magnificent mountain glory spreads out in front of your eyes. High above the Rio Genal valley, views are spectacular, down to the Mediterranean and the Rock of Gibraltar. Beyond, the peaks of Africa and Europe merge under a deep blue sky. It's absolutely wonderful.

The vast, craggy outcrop of the Crestellina Ridge rises up beyond the valley; on the other side, the mountains rise up again, thickly wooded with olive, almond, carob, fig and oak.

If you want to wake up to tranquil and very beautiful nature and a view that will always inspire, there's no better place. It's peaceful, serene - and majestic.

It gets better and better!

A work of art, this is a real country home which perfectly blends comfort, elegance and rustic charm.

Accessed along a farm track (an easy, one kilometre drive) from the country road which winds up from the coast to Gaucín, a driveway leads through six acres of private grounds to the villa which stands alone on its lofty hillside position.

Glistening white and bright in the sunshine under its beautifully weathered old roof tiles, there is a wide parking area immediately outside surrounded by blue flowering plumbago.

Even before you have got out of the car, you just know you have arrived somewhere very special.

Enormous, antique wooden double doors (more than 200 years old) open to a wide and delightfully cobbled, planted courtyard with a fountain at the rear of the house.

It's a very impressive entrance but, we promise you, once inside it gets better and better!

Creative design

The whole of the ground floor has been completely opened up to create a vast and really wonderful living space, beautifully furnished from end to end.

Previously owned by a very accomplished interior designer, the house is a classic example of her work - an unmistakable blend of comfort and very elegant, rustic charm. Add to this the exemplary good taste and beautiful furnishings of its current English owners and you have one of the most pleasing properties anywhere in Andalucía.

The whole of the ground floor has been completely opened up to create a vast and really wonderful living space, more than 70 feet long, 20 feet wide. A series of double doors all the way along one side of the room open to the south facing terrace - and those glorious views.

Light filters in, gently bathing this beautiful space in soft, golden hues; from end to end there are handsome furnishings, many of them exquisite antique pieces, an impressive collection of paintings collected on travels around the globe, plump sofas and easy chairs, colourful cushions and woven rugs, books galore and carefully chosen artefacts. It's fabulous and totally in keeping with the inherently Spanish ambience created by its gorgeous terracotta floor tiles and high, timber-beamed ceilings.

Delightfully relaxing

Beamed ceilings and terracotta floors merge perfectly with elegant antiques, original paintings, colourful fabrics and fascinating decorative pieces.

Absolutely everything is of the highest quality. But its no museum, it's all delightfully relaxing, homely and comfortable. A really charming home, one to be enjoyed.

Although it's one huge room, it subtly divides into distinct areas. The "cosy / TV" area with the kitchen alongside is at one end of the room. Here a sofa and easy chairs are gathered around the fireplace, a flat screen satellite TV in one corner (which has Freeview as well as iPod connectivity and there's a DVD).

The kitchen is to the side, so one can prepare meals and keep an eye on the cooking without missing out on any of the family banter! It's pretty too, with its soft blue and white theme as well as practical. Around its granite work-surfaces there's everything one could need - an electric oven with ceramic hob, microwave, fridge/freezer and dishwasher as well as all the usual kitchen bits and pieces.

Behind the kitchen there is a utility room which houses the washing machine and a tumble dryer.

Next along in the main room is the dining area with its magnificent mahogany dining table (which comfortably seats 10) taking centre stage. A traditional welsh dresser alongside displays a fine collection of china tableware.

The middle of the room is, in effect, the entrance hall of the house with lovely antique wooden doors opening to the courtyard behind and access to everywhere, upstairs and down.

As tasteful and charmingly furnished as everywhere else, extra interest is added here because it opens right to the top of the house (with a balcony view over it from the upstairs landing). It's an inspired and very pleasing bit of designing which adds significantly to the creative impact of this wonderful house.

Pretty and attractive

The bedrooms are, like the rest of the house, cosy and comfortable. Wooden floors and ceilings give them a lovely, soft and gentle feel.

Beyond, at the opposite end of the room, is a another beautifully relaxing living space. Perfect for the evening perhaps, or just somewhere to retreat to on your own, to read a book, away from the family hubbub going on down the other end!

Three white sofas are gathered around the fireplace at this end of the room surrounded by exquisite furnishings, table lamps and original, classic paintings. It has a splendid feeling of calm, cool spaciousness.

There is also a guest cloakroom on this floor, two steps up the wide, polished wooden staircase which takes one up (from the entrance area) to the bedrooms upstairs. This floor divides into two distinct parts either side of the landing which looks down over the entrance hall below.

Another of the lovely features of the house is that floors upstairs are not tiled (as they are downstairs); instead they have been beautifully laid in wood which gives the bedrooms a lovely, soft and gentle feel.

The great outdoors

The wisteria and jasmine covered terrace offers plenty of space to enjoy the breathtaking views and countryside joy all around.

To the right is a really delightful master bedroom suite ... one could be tempted to stay in bed all day!

Immaculately furnished in classic country style under a gorgeous wood-beamed ceiling, it has a chaise longue, antique dressing table, built in wardrobes and pretty floor kilms as well as its big, comfortable, top-quality double bed.

There are windows and balconies on three sides of the room. On one side it looks down over the swimming pool and the forested hillsides beyond. To the front your gaze takes you across the sea to Africa!

The huge en-suite wood-panelled bathroom is every bit as lovely with both a large walk-in shower and a free standing bath. There are, of course, more fabulous southerly views.

At the other end of the first floor there are two more en-suite bedrooms. One has twin beds pushed together, the other is a twin. They don't have the vast spaciousness of the master suite but are pretty rooms nonetheless. Both have balconies which look down the valley, the views far and wide.

Absolutely fabulous!

The pristine pool glistens gloriously blue in the sunshine and one can only marvel at the breathtaking view in front of you. Birdsong fills the air and there's not a lot wrong in the world ...

The fourth bedroom is located just off the cobbled courtyard (so 10 metres from the front door of the main house). Perfect for a couple who want a little extra independence it is double bedded with a fine antique wardrobe and walk-in shower room.

The series of french doors in the main living space all open to a wisteria and jasmine covered terrace which runs the whole length of the house. There's plenty of space here to enjoy the breathtaking views and countryside joy all around.

An attractive, covered dining area on one side offers very pleasant al-fresco dining (there is a gas fired barbecue); at the other end comfortable wicker sofas invite casual relaxation in the sunshine. Between the two, a gnarled old olive tree stands guard.

Lovely Gaucin village

Just five minutes away, Gaucín still retains its old-world Spanish charm, a delightful tangle of narrow, twisting streets and spectacular views.

This terrace leads around to the fabulous swimming pool which is at the far end of the house. A good size, 10.5 m x 5 m with a saltwater filtration system (no nasty chlorine here) it glistens gloriously blue in the sunshine and one can only marvel at the breathtaking view which opens up in front of you. Quality teak wood sunbeds line the wide bathing terrace, birdsong fills the air and there's not a lot wrong in the world ...

You just know that this is where you are going to spend a good part of your holiday. There's an all-weather ping pong table too, so, if you can't beat the kids at waterpolo, you can always try your luck at table tennis!

Gaucín, two kilometres away, is one of the classic white villages of Andalucía, as pretty as a postcard. Its narrow winding streets, hidden alleyways and spectacular views have long been an inspiration for painters and photographers. For a village of its size it has an excellent selection of restaurants and tapas bars.

Being just a couple of kilometres from the house it's perfectly possible to walk to and from the village. A very pleasant one, too. But please bear in mind that it's all uphill so, whilst the return leg couldn't be easier, the less fit of us might find it a little bit of a struggle on the way there.

There's plenty to do around and about. Whether you want to explore the wonderful nature, breathtaking vistas and first class hiking of the Serranía de Ronda, discover the culture and traditions of historic Ronda, or enjoy the beaches and golf courses of the Costa del Sol, there's something for everyone.

If you have a taste for lovely things you will be enchanted by this house, a beautifully designed and furnished home of the highest quality, comfort and charm. Here you will enjoy peace, tranquility and a quality of life that only the Andalusian countryside can offer.

Around and About

This is an excellent base from which to explore this delightful and very beautiful part of Andalucía.

Excursions

  • La Costa del Sol with its wealth of sandy beaches, sun, fun and nightlife is just 30 minutes away. Resort towns include Estepona (45 minutes) and glitzy, glamorous Marbella (under an hour).
  • Gibraltar, steeped in history, VAT free shops … and plenty of fish & chips is 1¼ hours away.
  • Tarifa on the southernmost point of Spain is 1½ hours from here. Looking directly across the Straits of Gibraltar to Morocco, Africa is so close you feel that you can almost touch it!
  • Beyond lie mile upon mile of magnificent white beaches on Spain's Atlantic coast, La Costa de la Luz.
  • A taste of Morocco perhaps? The fast boat from Tarifa to Tangiers takes 35 minutes, so you can be exploring the local souks in just a few hours. Fascinating and colourful, it really is a different world.
  • Spain's unique sherry wine region (Jerez and Sanlúcar), is well worth a visit, enhanced no doubt by stopping at one or two of the famous bodegas along the way! Jerez de la Frontera is 2 hours.
  • Cádiz (2¼ hours) continues to evoke the romance, intrigue and mystery of centuries of trade (some legal, some not so) between Europe, Africa and the Americas.
  • One of Europe's most important wetland reserves and bird sanctuaries, the Doñana National Park, is a popular attraction for nature lovers (4 hours). Its enormous variety of bird species include everything from flamingos to imperial eagles.
  • A beautiful road winds over the spectacular mountains to Ronda (45 minutes), with its spectacular gorge and Spain's oldest bullring, Hemmingway’s favourite town in all of Spain.
  • Sevilla takes 2½ hours. It is impossible not to be captivated by its exuberant atmosphere: stylish, confident, ancient and proud, yet also convivial, intimate and fun-loving. If you don't know what alegría means, Sevilla is the place to learn!
  • The fantastic railway between Algeciras on the coast and Ronda, to the north, stops at the little pueblo of Colmenar (20 minutes away). One of Europe’s great short railway journeys, running through landscapes which offer constantly plunging and spectacular views, this is a remarkable and wonderful way to see some of Andalucía's best and most dramatic countryside.
  • There are a plethora of beautiful white villages and hilltop towns to explore and enjoy in the magnificent countryside of the Serranía de Ronda – Jimena de la Frontera, Casares and Genalguacil to name but a few.
  • Nearby National Parks include the fabulous Los Alcornocales Natural Park and the Grazalema National Park, one of the most beautiful tracks of mountain anywhere in Europe. Jagged peaks, gorges, chasms, faults and caves, underground rivers and deep canyons are interspersed, here and there, by some of the prettiest villages in Spain, Grazalema, Zahara, Setenil and the other famous "pueblos blancos".
  • Córdoba and Granada are both 3 hours drive from here
