Villa Description
Just a couple of kilometres from one of Spain's prettiest pueblos blancos, this lovely old farmhouse enjoys a splendid vantage point high above the Rio Genal valley. Views are spectacular, down to the Mediterranean Sea, the Rock of Gibraltar and across to the Rif Mountains of Morocco beyond.
All around, the majestic scenery of the Serranía de Ronda provides brilliant brush strokes of colour and contrast. It's a glorious pastoral scene, a view which can be enjoyed for ever.
Accessed along a farm track (an easy ½ kilometre's drive) from the country road which winds up from the coast to Gaucín, gates open to its ten acre hillside estate of olive, almond, eucalyptus and fruit trees.
The first thing that strikes you is just how peaceful and serene everything is. Completely private, birdsong fills the air, the pool glistens gloriously blue in the sunshine and one marvels at the breathtaking view which opens up in front of you. It's one of the most seductively peaceful and relaxing settings imaginable.
The gorgeous walk-in pool (9 m x 6 m) enjoys day-long sunshine on the wide terrace below the farmhouse.
Comfy loungers beckon - you just know that this is where you are going to spend much of the holiday! To the left of the pool there is a covered shaded area with seating. There is plenty of space for sunbathing on the terrace surround, and bench seating too.
Steps take one up to an extensive sitting terrace directly in front of the house, its surrounds attractively planted with colourful shrubs and trees. With comfortable cane seats gathered around a Moroccan table, this is another lovely place to wile away pleasant hours.
Low level fencing around the perimeter of this terrace (with a gate at the top of the stairway) will stop little ones running down to the pool area unsupervised. The steps leading down to the pool can be lit at night.
A covered dining terrace is furnished with a large wooden table which will easily accommodate eight and doesn't miss out on the magnificent countryside views either!
This terrace extends around to the side of the house as well, where there is more occasional seating and more wonderful countryside to enjoy. On this side of the house part of the garden has been lawned and fenced off to make an attractive and safe place for young children to play.
Gleaming bright and white under its beautifully weathered old roof tiles, the farmhouse has genuine character. Tastefully refurbished over the years, it provides all the comforts of home yet remains what it has always been, an authentic farmhouse full of rustic charm. Furnishings and decoration reflects the owners' appreciation of its inherent traditional style.
Voted one of the top 5 villas in Europe, it has featured in The Sunday Times, The Indpendent, Conde Nast Traveller Magazine, and The London Evening Standard.
Double doors open to the terrace from a large living / dining room with the kitchen at its far end. A log fire, old floor tiles and beamed ceiling give it a pleasingly rustic feel.
The kitchen area is well equipped with two ovens (gas and electric), gas hob, microwave and dishwasher, and the dining table has seating for ten. Beyond the kitchen there's a laundry room.
The comfy lounge is equally relaxed, calmly decorated in white and eggshell blue. Sofas are gathered around a coffee table in front of the log fire, doors opening on two sides to the shaded dining terrace outside. Plenty of mod-cons here too, with a flat screen TV (Freeview satellite), an extensive collection of DVD's and internet connection.
The main house has central heating throughout and air conditioning in two of the bedrooms.
A downstairs cloakroom and a pretty, twin bedroom (with en-suite shower room) completes the distribution on the ground floor. Wooden French doors open to the terrace and make the best of the splendid views.
The other two bedrooms are upstairs. The master, double bedroom with en-suite bathroom (featuring a huge bath with shower over, and marble work tops) has its own private terrace with steps down to the gardens below. From its balcony the views extend over the pool and down to the coast.
A second double bedroom is a few stairs further up, also with an en-suite bathroom (walk in shower). With three windows in this room, it's light and spacious with wonderful views.
The two upstairs bedrooms have air conditioning, all three are pretty and attractively furnished. Towels and linen are top quality.
150 metres from the farmhouse, there's a separate cottage almost hidden under the greenery all around.
Fully self-contained (with flatscreen TV, CD and radio) it has a double bedroom (with en-suite shower room) and a large living / dining room with kitchen facilities.
Doors open to a little private sun terrace and to the gardens beyond. Ideal for grandparents, perhaps, the cottage is only available to guests staying in the main house. If it isn't required, it will be closed.
The gardens all around are delightful, well tended and full of a profusion of colourful plants and mature trees.
Below the cottage, just beyond the car parking area, part of the garden surrounds have been leveled and lawned to create a badminton or croquet area. Hoops and badminton equipment are available on request.
Gaucín, two kilometres away, is one of the classic white villages of Andalucía, as pretty as a postcard. Its narrow winding streets, hidden alleyways and spectacular views have long been an inspiration for painters and photographers. For a village of its size it has an excellent selection of restaurants and tapas bars.
Being just a couple of kilometres from the house it's perfectly possible to walk to and from the village. A very pleasant one, too. But please bear in mind that it's all uphill so, whilst the return leg couldn't be easier, the less fit of us might find it a little bit of a struggle on the way there.
There's plenty to do around and about. Whether you want to explore the wonderful nature, breathtaking vistas and first class hiking of the Serranía de Ronda (guided walks, bird watching and horse riding can be arranged), discover the culture and traditions of historic Ronda, or enjoy the beaches and golf courses of the Costa del Sol, there's something for everyone.
And what better, at the end of a lovely day, than to return here to your own little piece of Andalucía's rural paradise. Wonderful views, the peace and quiet of the countryside, genuine charm … this property is a gem!
And don't just take our word for it. One of our clients wrote, "I was unfamiliar with this part of Spain but there are truly stunning views, a very beautiful place. The house has all the facilities you could ever need. As a keen chef myself I have to say the kitchen is a pleasure to cook in. My personal highlight was watching an eagle sweep across the valley and dive. This is a real home."
