Review Icon"We had a fantastic stay at ZC91. Just sitting for breakfast at the porch every morning looking at the green hills was worth the time there. We had no idea the place was so close to the coast and at the same time so lush and green. It is the perfect place to breathe peace and tranquility and disconnect from your daily life. Both the garden and home are incredibly comfortable, with enough privacy for each sleeping area to make it perfect to come as a group. The pool and the garden were also perfect for our children. We went back home feeling refreshed and well rested. We will for sure come back at some point in the future."

Review Icon"We stayed at ZC91 during a long weekend with friends late February. Although I had seen the pictures beforehand my first impression was surprising, I had not accounted for the immense beauty of the surroundings; lush green countryside speckled with an array of tropical plants, not what one would expect from the commonly dry Andalusian region. As soon as I stood in front of the gates I understood this place was something special. The house arranges itself around a central courtyard paved with Arabic style brickwork which gives it a aura reminiscent of an other era. The inside however is very spacious and decorated with an exquisite modern taste; steel cables anchoring the structure, vintage furniture, first class utilities and gadgetry. The exterior and the views are spectacular; enormous swimMing pool overlooking the valley with the mountains as a backdrop. This place is a real gift for anyone who appreciates design, a first class experience in an unbeatable setting."

Villa Description

Subtle and imaginative

It's a nice quality house which is both comfortable and compellingly romantic.

This restored farmhouse has real style. The owner is an accomplished designer with exemplary good taste and creative flair; here he has combined traditional with contemporary.

The result is fabulous.

The longer you stay here, the better it gets. The attention to detail, imaginative colour schemes, subtle lighting, beautiful views … it all adds up to a house of nice quality which is both comfortable and compellingly romantic.

It is delightfully situated too, just off a little country lane, a few kilometres from the lovely hilltop town of Jimena de la Frontera. Views extend over rolling hillsides of gentle farmland to a backdrop of distant mountains.

It's a classic and peaceful pastoral scene. Well, peaceful most of the time anyway, as animal farming still takes place in and around the area.

A pastoral scene

Only 20 minutes inland from the Costa del Sol, views extend over rolling hillsides of gentle farmland to a backdrop of distant mountains.

Deep in the countryside, yet it's very easy to get around and about. The house is only 25 minutes by car to Sotogrande and the beaches of the Costa del Sol.

Tarifa on the Costa de la Luz is less than an hour away. Inland, pretty Gaucín is a 20 minute drive with historic Ronda another 40 minutes beyond.

You come up through the estate's short driveway, which climbs up a hillside lined with olive trees and colourful flower beds to the villa's entrance gates. Here there's shaded parking (for two cars) alongside a giant mulberry tree.

Lawns run down the gentle slopes to meadow lands below, rustically fenced off from the gardens.

Classical Andaluz

The villa wraps around a delightful central patio replete with lemon trees and a trickling Moroccan fountain.

One enters to a splendid Andaluz patio, with the villa, gleaming white under its lovely, weathered old terracotta roof tiles, extending around it on three sides.

Planted with fragrant lemon and palm trees, this is a lovely space with intricate tiling, a dining table and chairs, night lighting and a quietly trickling, mosaic glass fountain at its centre.

Ornately carved antique wooden doors welcome you into the villa.

A cool, serene entrance hall under its traditional, beamed ceiling leads through to a practical and modern kitchen, boasting a complete set of appliances. These include a coffee machine, steam oven, regular oven, huge electric hob, dishwasher and fridge/freezer/icemaker.

Even a celebrity chef will be happy creating something special here!

Full of interest

An artistic mix of antiques and modern functionality.

Beyond the kitchen is the living / dining room … a huge and wonderful room full of interest under its splendid, high beamed ceiling. This room is big enough to be home to a full sized pool table!

Here you will find sofas are gathered around a huge log fireplace and other armchairs are casually placed here and there, offering both colour and contrast. This combined with the soft and subtle lighting, makes for a great spot to relax.

Sweet dreams

Romantic bedrooms feature comfortable king-sized beds, subtle lighting and gorgeous en-suite bathrooms.

At the far end of the living room a short corridor leads to two of the bedrooms. The first is a pretty double (the bed is queen-sized), with a lovely en-suite walk-in shower room which features handmade mosaic flooring and Moroccan-style polished plaster walls, all in delightful shades of turquoise.

Next comes the master bedroom and this one is even bigger and just as delightful!

White is the theme colour here, offset by occasional splashes of bright colour, augmented by romantic lighting. There's a fireplace in the corner and doors out to the garden but what will probably take your eye first is the hand carved, freestanding marble bath which sits in a corner by the fireplace. It's gorgeous!

Attention to detail

The bathrooms are of a fine standard, water pressure is strong and there's no shortage of hot and cold water.

This bedroom also features a king-sized double bed and an en-suite mosaic bathroom with walk-in shower. The polished plaster walls in this one are painted a beautiful blue. There are fitted wardrobes and, in the corridor just outside, plenty of extra storage space.

Returning to the entrance hall, on its other side there is another, equally attractive shower room / W.C. (this one with polished plaster walls of bottle green). As elsewhere in the property, power showers are standard and the water pressure is excellent. The pleasant bathrooms are complemented by underfloor heating for your comfort.

Alongside is a small but very sweet single bedroom.

A short flight of steps lead up to the only part of the house which is not at ground floor level, the original bell tower which has two single beds, a wardrobe and desk, and has lovely elevated views over the pool from its balcony windows.

Country living

It's perfectly designed to enjoy all that's wonderful about rural Spain - lounging around in the sunshine, outdoor dining, playing and partying.

The other side of the villa is all about out-door-living, carefully designed to enjoy the very best that rural Andalucía has to offer.

A wide and comfortably covered terrace runs along the length of the property. This opens to the large area of lawn which winds all the way around the property, a perfect place for children to play.

Views, of course, extend from here over the hills on the other side of the valley to the mountains. It's very pretty.

Beyond the wide lawn, All there along the patio wall surrounding the house, there are chives, lemons, mint, rosemary, sage, thyme. Guests can help themselves.

Bird watchers will enjoy seeing all sorts of migratory birds - hoopoes, swallows, eagles, vultures - and in spring the meadows are full of wild flowers.

Oh, what a beauty!

Lawns and beautiful, mature trees provide a delightful backdrop to the magnificent and utterly irresistible swimming pool.

And then there's the swimming pool … oh, what a beauty! It's massive, 10 m x 10 m, with steps in at the shallow end, 2.5 m deep at the other. It has a salt filtration system, there is a pool shower to the side and its cobalt blue waters are utterly irresistible! A wide sun terrace alongside is protected from any breeze by a high wall and is furnished with loungers.

Lying under the Spanish sun is, as we all know, hard and thirsty work but just a few short steps will take you to the chiringuito (the pool bar and barbecue) which has the hard work covered with a dishwasher, and a fridge for those all important cool refreshments! There is night lighting and a music system (with iPod connection) for the terrace and barbecue area. The pool lights up at night too.

The pool is fenced and gated on this, lower side. Behind, more lawns and lots of mature trees - olive, fig, almond, pomegranate, eucalyptus and citrus among them - climb up the estate grounds.

Access to the pool from this side isn't gated and whilst it would be quite a trip for a youngster to get around to here, it is worth being aware that access is possible.

The right wing of the building has been converted into a lovely, large self contained "Guest Wing" - Accessed directly from the courtyard into a large room that acts as a playroom, dayroom, livingroom with a big fire place for cooler winter nights - The high, wooden sloped celings, white walls and terracotta floors are all in style and keeping with the standard of the rest of the house. This room has cozy sofas, colourful rugs, toys and lots of light...It also has 2 sets of bunk beds - All the children in the family can be gathered together in this spacious room, spending many happy hours playing, there is even a tent for their enjoyment.

This "wing" comes complete with a fully equipped kitchen and a full bathroom.

Around and About

This is an excellent base from which to explore this delightful and very beautiful part of Andalucía.

Excursions

  • There are a plethora of beautiful white villages and hilltop towns to explore and enjoy in the magnificent countryside all around – starting, of course, with nearby Jimena de la Frontera. One of the most charming of Andalucia's small towns, its Moorish castle presides over a village well known for its traditional houses, narrow winding streets, bars and restaurants. It's charming.
  • Others include Gaucín, Casares, Genalguacil and lovely old Ronda, all surrounded by the majestic mountain scenery of the Serranía de Ronda and the fabulous Los Alcornocales Natural Park which starts immediately on the other side of Jimena. It's a paradise for walkers, riders, bird watchers, nature lovers and anyone looking for calm and relaxation.
  • To the south there's Sotogrande (25 minutes away), a a completely different world of indulgent opulence and immaculately manicured golf courses and polo fields. Immediately beyond lie the sandy beaches, sun, fun and marinas of the Med. Resort towns include Estepona (55 minutes) and glitzy, glamorous Marbella (an hour and a bit).
  • From here you are equally well placed to head for the Atlantic beaches on the Costa de la Luz. Gibraltar, steeped in history, VAT free shops … and fish & chips, is less than an hour away, but perhaps of more interest is Tarifa on the southernmost point of Spain, an hour from here. Looking directly across the Straits of Gibraltar to Morocco, Africa is so close you feel that you can almost touch it!
  • Beyond lie mile upon mile of magnificent white beaches.
  • A taste of Morocco perhaps? The fast boat from Tarifa to Tangiers takes 35 minutes, so you can be exploring the local souks in just a few hours. Fascinating and colourful, it really is a different world.
  • Spain's unique sherry wine region (Jerez and Sanlúcar), is well worth a visit, enhanced no doubt by stopping at one or two of the famous bodegas along the way! Jerez de la Frontera is a 90 minute drive.
  • Cádiz (1¾ hours) continues to evoke the romance, intrigue and mystery of centuries of trade (some legal, some not so) between Europe, Africa and the Americas.
  • One of Europe's most important wetland reserves and bird sanctuaries, the Doñana National Park, is a popular attraction for nature lovers (4 hours). Its enormous variety of bird species include everything from flamingos to imperial eagles.
  • From Gaucín (20 minutes away) a beautiful road winds over the spectacular mountains to Ronda (45 minutes from Gaucín), with its spectacular gorge and Spain's oldest bullring, Hemmingway’s favourite town in all of Spain.
  • Sevilla takes 2½ hours. It is impossible not to be captivated by its exuberant atmosphere: stylish, confident, ancient and proud, yet also convivial, intimate and fun-loving. If you don't know what alegría means, Sevilla is the place to learn!
  • The fantastic railway between Algeciras on the coast and Ronda, to the north, stops at nearby Jimena. One of Europe’s great short railway journeys, running through landscapes which offer constantly plunging and spectacular views, this is a remarkable and wonderful way to see some of Andalucía's best and most dramatic countryside.
  • Córdoba and Granada are both 3 hours drive from here

Activities

  • Here you are in the heart of the "Costa del Golf" with at least 25 top quality golf courses (including Finca Cortesin, Valderrama, Sotogrande, and San Roque) all within half an hour's drive.
  • On the coast (both the Costa del Sol and the Costa de la Luz) there’s every beach pursuit imaginable, from sailing and windsurfing, diving and snorkelling to whale and dolphin watching.
  • Jimena de la Fontera has a decent municipal pool and there's excellent swimming in the pools of the nearby Hozgarganta river.
  • The surrounding Los Alcornocales Natural Park is heaven-made for great walking. A bird watchers paradise too, no doubt you will be accompanied by ravens, golden orioles or huge buzzards soaring high overhead.
