Villa Description

Dreams are made of this

"Thank you for the best week's holiday we could have dreamed of. The setting was wonderful and we were all in total awe of the beauty of it all. Many, many thanks again for a wonderful week".

Set deep in the heart of the Spanish hinterland, this jewel of Andalusian architecture dates back to 1492, a superb marquess' mansion which has been beautifully restored and modernised with immaculate care and craftsmanship. All of its original characteristics remained unaltered.

The result is outstanding accommodation of the very highest quality, in a spectacularly beautiful location between Granada and the sea. It's a marvellous residence amidst a sea of countryside tranquillity, one that exudes a wonderful ambience of understated, old-style luxury.

The Palacete can accommodate up to 22 guests in the main house plus another six guests in each of the two courtyard cottages (if required).

A magnificent country property that can accommodate from 16 to 30 guests, it's the perfect place for small groups to get away from it all - whether to relax or to work - in a peaceful and very elegant environment.

Out of this world

"A belated thank you for the most wonderful time. Everyone thought the Palacete was out of this world. The house, the gardens, the views, the chapel, the pool ..."

Ideally suited for mixed family holidays, small business conferences and seminars, or as a base for special interest groups, in low season it is also available for hire on a daily basis, with or without overnight accommodation (prices on application), making it a perfect venue for weddings, baptisms, film shoots, conferences or any other special events.

The property comprises the mansion house itself (where most of the accommodation is located), and (if required) two separate courtyard cottages each with three bedrooms, spacious ornamental gardens, private chapel, swimming pool, tennis court and an outside summer bar /eating area, all accompanied by magnificent views of the surrounding hillsides.

Entrance to the property is electronically controlled, guaranteeing privacy for guests at all times.

We have memories we will treasure for years

"I should like to take this opportunity to tell you how very much we treasured the week. Though our expectations were high, they were exceeded by the beauty of the home and surroundings. It was perfect".

The spacious entrance hall, with its 300 year old wall tiles from Sevilla, opens through to delight after delight: the magnificent main drawing room with its centre column, vaulted ceiling and original stone fireplace, a library (there is Wi-Fi internet connection available), a day room/tv room (with Sky satellite TV, DVD system and VHS) and the timber panelled dining room with seating for up to 24 persons.

The fully equipped country style kitchen has twin ovens, fridges, freezers, dishwasher and a walk-in crockery cupboard.

The ground floor also houses the laundry room and a museum/ games room (with a pool table), an inner patio and one bedroom (No. 10) with twin beds and an en-suite shower room.

The other ten bedrooms are upstairs (see the detailed list on the right hand side of the page). Each bedroom is different, each decorated with individual style, antique furnishings and splendid elegance. All have en-suite bathrooms.

Larger parties can also rent either one - or both - of the self-contained courtyard cottages.

A small vine covered terrace takes one to the front door of Casita del Patio Grande. Inside, the entrance hall leads through to a fully equipped country-style kitchen (with dishwasher, washing machine and fridge freezer) and to a twin bedded room with en-suite bathroom and French windows which open to a terrace with panoramic views over the totally unspoiled valley. The other two twin bedrooms (both with en-suite bathrooms) are upstairs; one overlooking the courtyard, the other with views over the countryside.

Casita del Moro is alongside. The entrance hall leads through to a modern kitchen with fridge, oven, microwave and washing machine. Also on the ground floor is a spacious double-aspect twin bedded room with en-suite shower room. French windows open to to a small but charming courtyard and the delightful views. Two more twin bedrooms (both with en-suite shower rooms and excellent views) are upstairs.

Blown Away

"As soon as we got there I was absolutely blown away with how beautiful the house and grounds are. I would be happy to give any future renters an ear full of how beautiful the Palacete is".

The old olive mill at the back of the premises has been converted into a dining hall, a fully open space which can accommodate up to 100 diners. Perfect for wedding groups, conferences, yoga or fitness groups etc, there is no extra charge to groups staying at the Palacete for using it.

The grounds are every bit as impressive as the mansion. The ornamental Moorish gardens have been painstakingly restored to their former glory offering guests the opportunity to wander or relax in total peace and tranquillity among the centuries-old palm trees, shady borders and colourful, exotic plants.

Everything is meticulously maintained.

Ancient cypress hedges border the lovely swimming pool which is fed by a natural spring. Optional pool heating is now available by separate arrangement (usually only necessary from November through to April).

Magical

"We wanted to say a big thanks for renting the beautiful Palacete for our wedding. We had the most amazing wedding and all our guests fell in love with the Palacete. It was the most magical day and week leading up to it".

The tennis court is located adjacent to the summer bar and terrace. There are several terraces to choose from. The huge main terrace is a superb sun bathing area and enjoys magnificent views over the valley to the village of Otivar on the other side.

Alongside the main house is a beautiful and now fully restored, private chapel. Wedding receptions for up to 100 guests (preceded by an official marriage blessing in the private chapel, if desired) can be arranged.

The old-style atmosphere of the mansion has been very carefully preserved. For this reason, you will not find air conditioning or central heating units, mini bars or telephones in the rooms.

In the winter, electric heating for the bedrooms and open log fires for the lounge areas are, of course, provided. And if guests wish to communicate by telephone, fax or email then they can do so from the library.

So relaxing

"Thank you for a marvellous break and truly entertaining hospitality. Peppa and the girls were wonderful, the food was delicious. We will pass on your secret to a select few".

Views range far and wide over huge chirimoya groves and down to the shimmering Mediterranean. The scenic drive from here to the Moor's Sigh, overlooking the city of Granada, is a must.

This is an excellent base from which to explore the area or undertake organised sporting or cultural activities. For sightseers there is Granada itself, the Sierra Nevada ski resort, the Costa Tropical and the Alpujarra mountains, just a few of the numerous attractions that lie within a short drive of the property.

Those interested in more active pursuits will find a huge choice of local sports, from deep sea diving on the coast to hang-gliding in the mountains.

Wherever you go, whatever you do, you will delight in returning to this historic jewel of Andalusian architecture in its peaceful and exclusive environment. It's a truly outstanding country residence.

Around and About

This is an excellent base from which to explore this delightful and very beautiful part of Andalucía.

Excursions

  • Nearby Otívar is a small village of about 1,000 residents located on the ancient and very scenic mountain road (well worth a trip out) connecting Almuñécar with Granada. The village has a few bars and restaurants, two banks (one with a cash dispenser), small shops and supermarket. Fresh fish is delivered to the village from the coast daily and local bread and delicacies can be bought from the two bakeries.
  • Situated in the Sierra del Chaparral, between the Sierra de Los Guajares and Almijara mountain ranges, Otívar is just 20 minutes inland from Almuñecar on the coast.
  • The Rio Verde of Otivar offers abundant outdoor sporting activities. It boasts many waterfalls and rapids, as well as deep ravines and gorges. One can go trekking, rafting, rock climbing, caving, and mountain climbing here.
  • Almuñécar is the biggest resort town on the Costa Tropical, very popular with Granadinos who pour out of the city every weekend and head off to the sea. It has a popular salt-water aquapark and a fabulous jazz festival each summer (in July).
  • 10 minutes further along ther coast, La Herradura has one of the prettiest bays anywhere on the south coast of Spain. Two huge natural promontories, the Punta de la Mona and Cerro Gordo, protect a 2 km long beach fronted by a procession of restaurants, bars, hostals and shops. Unlike almost anywhere else along the coast, development has been restricted in height and you can still enjoy the contours of its natural setting. The village climbs up the gentle slopes leading up from the beach.
  • Throughout the length of the bay you'll find plenty of chiringuitos (beach bars), and there are a number of watersports clubs. It's a cheerful, peaceful, laid back place in the best tradition of Spanish seaside towns. A relaxed lunch at one of the beach bars is highly recommended - even in winter if the sun is shining!
  • The next resort town along is Nerja. Much more "international" with a strong British presence (you can have a curry here ... ) it boasts 16 kilometres of beaches with powdery sand and sparkling clear water.
  • The heart of Nerja is its spectacular Balcón de Europa, a magnificent promenade along the edge of a towering cliff, with sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the small coves and beaches below, against an awesome backdrop of hazy blue mountains.
  • However, Nerja's most spectacular attraction is undoubtedly its magnificent caves - a series of huge caverns stretching for almost five kilometres and home to the world’s largest stalagmite, a 32 metre high column measuring 13 metres by 7 metres at its base. Located three kilometres out of town there are archaeological treasures galore including paintings over 20,000 years old and other pre-historic remains.
  • One of the enormous natural caverns has been transformed into a concert hall, where many fabulous performances (classical and flamenco) are staged during the summer. The International Festival of Music and Dance takes place in mid July each year.
  • Even closer than Nerja, just on the other side of the huge Cerro Gordo promontory to the west of La Herradura lies a splendid but isolated beach, Playa de Cantarriján. It's a favourite spot for many. Part of the sand and shingle beach has been designated a nudist bathing area, although the western end is normally occupied by conventional sunbathers. There are a couple of good beachbars/ restaurants open throughout the season.
  • Granada is, of course, a must-see city. Soaring high above is the spectacular back drop of the snow-covered Sierra Nevada mountains. And what a city lies below, a city of classical beauty, the jewel in the Spanish Crown.
  • The mesmerising Alhambra Palace and its exquisite gardens, one of the world's greatest wonders; the narrow, cobbled streets and beautiful walled gardens of the ancient Arab quarter, El Albaicín; the magnificent Cathedral, just one of many superb examples of Renaissance architecture; the caves of Sacramonte, nostalgic legacy of the gypsies.
  • A city which inspired García Lorca, Andalucía's finest poet, it is, above all, a people's city, full of life and colour, energy and fun.
  • For something completely different, turn off the motorway (on the way to Granada) for Las Alpujarras. Between the highest mountains in Spain and the Mediterranean Sea, Las Alpujarras is one of the most enchanting and beautiful regions in the world, a joyous land of sunshine, snowy mountains and some of the most splendid scenery imaginable.
  • The Moors took refuge in these hills and resisted here, maintaining their customs and way of life for well over a hundred years after they were expelled from Granada in 1492 by their Christian conquerors. Las Alpujarras was their final battlefield in Spain.
  • Their legacy is to be seen everywhere: in the distinctive architecture of the mountain villages and in the intricate system of irrigation waterways which they built and which still keep the landscape green and fertile, fed by the snows melting high in the sierras above.
  • If you like walking or horse riding, this is the place to be.

Activities

  • As mentioned above, The Rio Verde of Otívar offers wonderful mountain activities. One can go trekking, rafting, rock climbing, caving, and mountain climbing here.
  • On the coast there are a million things to do - scuba, cavern and technical diving, horse riding and tennis, paragliding, climbing, and abseiling. In summer the water on this coast is very clear, with a visibility of up to 25m (80ft), and teeming with fish.
