Review Icon"We took the late flight out to Malaga which meant we arrived at ZX15 at 2am and successfully manoeuvred the country lane in the dead of night. It wasn't until the next morning that we were able to take in the amazing scenery of vast wide vistas with Mount Maroma rising behind. The property is spacious, clean and very well equipped comfortable bedrooms (with firm beds) and everything you'd need in the kitchen. The gardens are delightful. As other guests have commented, on a clear night the starry sky is beautiful. "

Review Icon"The villa is situated in an idillic location with stunning views. The exterior has a wonderful pool, driveway for 2 cars and is incredibly neat and tidy. The interior is very clean and modern with a Spanish feel, spacious and homely. The sun rests on the property all day with the opportunity to watch it set behind a nearby mountain by the pool. We would highly recommend this property to anyone, couples, families etc would love it here. We can't wait to book for next year!"

Villa Description

Up in the hills

Lake Viñuela is just visible in the valley far below, the views extending far and wide over the coastal hills to the Mediterranean Sea.

A very pretty 20 minute drive up into the hills from the Costa Tropical resort of Torre del Mar will bring you to Canillas de Aceituno, a classic Andaluz white village in a spectacular location overlooking a wide vista of mountain scenery.

Lake Viñuela is just visible in the valley far below, the views extending far and wide over the coastal hills to the Mediterranean Sea.

From here a three kilometre track (which has a few drops here and there but is mostly tarmac and in good condition, easily negotiated in an ordinary car) will take you to the little cluster of properties on a hillside which includes this one.

Contemporary and very pleasing, it is a villa which has been designed, constructed and furnished throughout to a high standard.

There are neighbouring properties dotted about on the hillsides, one of them on the bank above the rental home. No one lives there but the owner does come from time to time to tend his vegetables. So, not totally isolated, but it's still easy to feel completely at peace with the world here.

Really attractive

Flowering shrubs and palm trees, pretty night lighting and the twinkling stars above create a lovely ambience on the wide pool terrace.

From the wide pool terrace which extends along the length of the villa, the views are fantastic, over a broad sweep of some of Andalucia's best countryside, from the mountains which rise up behind and all the way down to the sea.

This outdoor space is really attractive. The quality wooden dining table (which comfortably seats eight) is under shade, with the gas barbecue close at hand on its marble surround.

Pretty night lighting (and more often than not, the twinkling stars as well) creates a lovely ambience.

No doubt you will wile away many an idle hour here, looking over the blue waters of the swimming pool to the flowering shrubs and palm trees which have been planted in a series of circular and semi-circular flower beds which extends around the whole terrace. It's a design clearly inspired by the great Gaudi himself!

Pleasing on the eye

Inside the light and sunny theme is continued, its modern design and colourful furnishings always bright and cheerful.

Australian sails have been cleverly used to create more shaded areas at the other end of the terrace and there's still plenty of space left to lounge in full sunshine around the pool.

Thoughtful touches include a little herb garden and, of course, a lemon tree to add a little sparkle to your gin and tonics!

Inside, this light and sunny theme is continued, with both the design and the furnishings always bright and cheerful. White predominates with colourful fabrics offering attractive contrast. It's thoroughly modern and very pleasing on the eye.

Glass doors open from the dining terrace to the living room, where comfortable sofas and an armchair are neatly gathered in front of a wood burning stove.

Well equipped

Central heating and air conditioning throughout ensure year round comfort. There's freeview TV, WiFi internet connection and excellent kitchen space.

Just open those glass terrace doors and indoor and outdoor living will be seamlessly blended.

The inside dining table also comfortably seats eight. Alongside, the very well equipped kitchen has marble work surfaces, a breakfast bar (with stools) and a huge American style fridge/freezer - so there's no shortage of ice to top up those gin and tonics!

A short corridor leads through to a bathroom and to three of the bedrooms, two doubles and one twin bedded room.

Both the master bedroom and the second double bedroom have en-suite bathrooms and both have double glass doors opening to the pool and terrace.

The master bedroom also has its own furnished patio space.

Shoot your best pool

The attractive games room upstairs on the mezzanine floor houses a championship standard pool table and a darts board.

Upstairs is a mezzanine floor (it looks onto the living room below) which has been neatly and cleverly divided into a twin bedroom on one side and an attractive games room on the other.

The latter houses a championship standard pool table, a darts board and some casual seating. Apart from the quality of the pool table, you will also appreciate the space its been given, so you can shoot your best pool without being cramped up in a corner.

Everything has been designed to provide a proper family holiday environment. Central heating and air conditioning throughout ensure year round comfort. There's freeview TV (so all UK terrestrial channels are available) and there's WiFi internet.

The house manager lives nearby and is on hand for meeting and greeting, local information etc.

Fun for all the family

Mediterranean resorts such as Nerja and Torre del Mar are little more than half an hour away, small towns with lovely beaches and plenty of charm.

There's lots to do nearby: pretty villages to explore with their authentic Andalusian character, the timeless countryside of La Axarquía with it's beautiful lake, La Viñuela as it's centrepiece, and the dramatic mountain terrain of the Montes de Málaga.

Scuba diving and horse riding are both available locally. The historic city of Granada is an easy day trip. If you like walking, there's no need to take your car to town. A pleasant, but uphill walk of around thirty minutes, it is not for everyone, but if you fancy stretching your legs then what better way to pick up a few groceries and some fresh bread!

And from here its so easy to get down to the coast. Mediterranean resorts such as Nerja and Torre del Mar are little more than half an hour away, small towns with lovely beaches and far more charm and style than anything you could find on the more renown parts of the Costa del Sol.

Many of our clients are happy to stay right here. As one said, "it suited our fortnight of doing absolutely nothing, perfectly. We only left the villa twice - to get food. We really enjoyed it!"

Around and About

This is an excellent base from which to explore this delightful and very beautiful part of Andalucía.

Excursions

  • Nearby Canillas de Aceituno is a small town with a population of some 2,500. Set at the foot of the Sierra de Tejeda (crowned by the peak of La Maroma at 2,080 meters, the highest in the province), it is a natural balcony.
  • A town of narrow streets, whitewashed houses, Moorish arches and corners festooned with flowers, views to the sea and Lake Viñuela are spectacular. The town's origins are Moorish and it retains its typically Andaluz lifestyle.
  • Nearby, the spectacular canyon of the River Almachares and the Cave of La Fajara are worth visiting.
  • Lake Vinuela is a man-made lake but none the less spectacular and picturesque for this. Its azure-blue waters are surrounded by rolling hills and a number of delightful villages including Canillas de Aceituno, Alcaucin, Periana and Riogordo. Close by, the villages of Comares, Competa and Benamargosa are equally charming.
  • Pretty beaches make this the ideal place for a family outing, away from the nearby, busy coastline. Pine trees add to the sense of tranquillity and the feeling of being at one with nature, while they provide the perfect habitat for many different species of birds.
  • Picnic areas have been set out, complete with barbeque facilities, offering splendid views across the placid waters. They are only occasionally disturbed by small boats, which add a fitting splash of colour to the surroundings. All of this set against the majestic backdrop of the nearby mountains.
  • Torre del Mar is the closest seaside resort and boasts one of the longest, and certainly one of the widest, beaches on the coast. Running parallel to its 4 kilometres of sandy beach is a splendid promenade with a wide walking area, cycle lane, grassy areas, play areas for children and, of course, numerous restaurants (including some excellent fresh fish and seafood), chiringuitos (beach bars) and other watering holes. It is very Spanish in character although, as with most places these days, you will find quite an eclectic mix of bars and restaurants. For the young at heart, there's plenty of night-long, night life too.
  • The esplanade extends all the way to the fishing port and marina at La Caleta de Velez. This area has not yet been developed and it remains very much a working port.
  • Nerja is a little further east along the coast. Much more "international" with a strong British presence (you can have a curry here ... ) it boasts 16 kilometres of beaches with powdery sand and sparkling clear water.
  • Flanked by a dramatic mountain range, Sierra Almijara, to the east, the town has managed to avoid being blighted by the concrete high-rise scenario and tourist boom in some Costa del Sol resorts. The old quarter of the town is still virtually unchanged from its sleepy fishing village days of old with narrow, winding streets, its whitewashed houses overflowing with geraniums.
  • The heart of Nerja is its spectacular Balcón de Europa, a magnificent promenade along the edge of a towering cliff, with sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the small coves and beaches below, against an awesome backdrop of hazy blue mountains.
  • However, Nerja's most spectacular attraction is undoubtedly its magnificent caves - a series of huge caverns stretching for almost five kilometres and home to the world’s largest stalagmite, a 32 metre high column measuring 13 metres by 7 metres at its base. Located three kilometres out of town there are archaeological treasures galore including paintings over 20,000 years old and other pre-historic remains.
  • One of the enormous natural caverns has been transformed into a concert hall, where many fabulous performances (classical and flamenco) are staged during the summer. The International Festival of Music and Dance takes place in mid July each year.
  • Just inland from Torre del Mar is Vélez-Málaga, capital of La Axarquía. It is the centre of an agricultural region known for its strawberries and vineyards, which produce the muscatel grapes from which the famous Málaga wines are made.
  • If you are here on a Thursday, take time to wander around its weekly market, always an enjoyable experience. The 13th Century Moorish castle and the lovely old town are also worth visiting.
  • A prestigious guitar competition takes place annually in July with free concerts taking place on the patio of the Palacio del Marqués de Beniel. More controversially, Vélez also holds legalised cock-fighting every Sunday when crowds of aficionados arrive to place their bets.
  • Further a field, Granada is, of course, a must-see city. Soaring high above is the spectacular back drop of the snow-covered Sierra Nevada mountains. And what a city lies below, a city of classical beauty, the jewel in the Spanish Crown.
  • The mesmerising Alhambra Palace and its exquisite gardens, one of the world's greatest wonders; the narrow, cobbled streets and beautiful walled gardens of the ancient Arab quarter, El Albaicín; the magnificent Cathedral, just one of many superb examples of Renaissance architecture; the caves of Sacramonte, nostalgic legacy of the gypsies.
  • A city which inspired García Lorca, Andalucía's finest poet, it is, above all, a people's city, full of life and colour, energy and fun.

Activities

  • There are many sporting activities on offer around the shores of Lake Viñuela, including horse riding, golf, hang gliding and walking. In the main these activities are offered by enterprising Brit's and other Europeans who have settled in the area.
  • La Sierra de Tejeda which rises up above 2,000 metres, offers a wealth of wonderful nature and walking possibilities.
  • Sailing and a variety of other watersports are available at the fishing port and marina, La Caleta de Velez. All major water sports are also available in Nerja including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing.
  • For golf enthusiasts, there are several excellent golf courses to choose from. Many speak highly of the course at Antequera (1½ hours away) although there are plenty of others closer by.
