Villa Description
This secluded villa is a real rural getaway. Surrounded by rolling arable countryside, under a big sky, peace and privacy are assured. The English owners are farmers and it was natural that when they were looking for an Andalucían retreat, they chose to buy seven acres of land in the middle of wonderful countryside. Sadly, the original farmhouse was too much of a ruin to save and a new house had to be put in its place. Despite this, the owners wanted to remain true to the locality and whilst having the modern comfort of a new house, the property has a farmhouse hacienda look, in keeping with its landscape.
The villa has a very comfortable feel to it and because the owners come out when they can, it has a warmth to it that only 'lived in' houses have. The house is decorated throughout with high quality furnishings appropriate to a home from home. The rooms of the house are all on one level with the large basement garage downstairs.
The living room, kitchen and dining area are all in one open space under a pitched ceiling with exposed beams. Two patio doors open out to give direct access to the (gated) pool terrace and three large windows let light flood in. The open plan room is large yet sociable so anyone in the kitchen will feel included in what's going on in the living area. The whole feel is of a farmhouse hub, the heart of the house.
The kitchen has an island food preparation area housing all the pots and pans as well as numerous terracotta pots for use as well as for decoration. The cooker has a three-ring induction ceramic hob and electric oven. All the work tops are stone and there are twin sinks. Basic condiments like oil and vinegar, salt and pepper are left for guests' use. The dining table between the kitchen and living room seats eight, but is long enough to seat more.
The house is easy to find as its track is immediately off a main road to Villanueva de la Concepcíon. The track is 600m long, concrete in places, a bit bumpy in others, but nothing that a normal hire car can't cope with. The house is situated on a hill at the end of this track and commands spectacular views all around. The perimeter is encircled by a rockery which provides a natural-looking border between the house and the surrounding fields. There is plenty of space for parking, a gravel drive runs behind the house.
As is usual for a hacienda, you enter through a cobbled courtyard patio made pretty with giant pots and bougainvillea. There is a table for four and a parasol, ideal to sit with a paper or perhaps take breakfast here, away from the main living area. The only sound will be the birds singing overhead and perhaps a goat's bell or two.
The spacious entrance hall gives you an idea of the tasteful decor that carries on throughout the house. White walls and terracotta tiles are in keeping with the rustic-chic flavour of the property while solid items of furniture, chests and trestle table, remind you of its farming heritage. The entrance hall leads directly into the open plan living area.
The Wifi is in this living area and is very good in the rest of house (apart from, possibly, the twin bedroom furthest away which may have a weaker signal at times).
The living area is an inviting and friendly place to chill out. Three comfy sofas are arranged around a coffee table and two extra armchairs mean there's no shortage of places to sit. For entertainment there is a flatscreen TV, dvd player and books, books and more books on the shelves close by. For cooler months, there is a log burner to keep you cosy.
All four bedrooms lead off from the main entrance hall and all have en suite facilities. The master bedroom suite (pictured here) looks out across the fields and towards the wonderful view of El Torcal. This romantic room has French doors giving direct access to a side terrace where there is a sitting area and dining table seating eight. This terrace is west facing, making it extra special for sunset drinks and meals. The perfect end to a perfect day.
In the bathroom, there won't be any arguments over the facilities as there is a bath tub with a shower over, as well as a separate walk-in shower, twin sinks and twin mirrors.
The other three bedrooms are equally all of a good, large size. Two of the bedrooms are twin bedded with views of the fields. Their bathrooms have walk in showers with large, overhead roses and a hand extension, wc and marble surrounded basins.
The third bedroom is a double bedded room which looks out on the opposite side of the house to the pool area. As with all the other bedrooms, there is plenty of wardrobe space. This room has an overhead walk-in shower, its wc is separate from the shower and basin area.
Although the house does not have air conditioning, all the bedrooms have the benefit of quiet ceiling fans.
The front of the house looks onto the pool terrace and the pool gardens. The terrace has plenty of space for outside dining and relaxing. A gas barbecue is provided as well as a dining table which can be extended to seat eight. The rattan sofa suite means you can supervise pool activity in comfort. As the sun goes down, you'll be treated to the smell of jasmine while enjoying the vibrant sunsets that this region is famous for. The garden is a pleasure, very well maintained with fruit trees, yuccas and succulents, in keeping with the sunny climate.
The pool itself can be reached directly from the gated front terrace or by a gravelled path planted on either side with a variety of fruit trees: plum, apricot, almonds, lemon, pomegranate and olive. Figs are in abundance in June and July and guests are kindly invited to help themselves to these and any fruit which happens to be in season during their holiday. The pool is bordered with terracotta flagstones and fragrant rosemary. There is a convenient poolside shower with sunbeds and parasols for relaxing. Both the gardens and the pool have the benefit of night lighting, a swim under the stars has to be done!
Although the pool itself is not fenced, the terrace facing the pool is gated and the garden surrounding the pool is totally walled-in. If the two doors in this garden wall are closed and the terrace gates shut, the pool will be inaccessible to little ones.
And finally ... from the hall, the stairs go down to the big garage basement where the table tennis table is set up and the pool toys are kept. Guests are welcome to use the lilos; there are also buckets and spades for the little ones. The washing machine and laundry sink are down here, in the utility room.
The house is very quiet and private, the nearest neighbours are a small herd of goats (not too) nearby. You can sometimes hear their bells but it's a gentle sound and adds to the charm of this rural Spanish area.
Interesting sights provided by the natural world are in abundance. Geological features such as El Chorro with its dramatic Gorge of the Gaitanes and of course, El Torcal National Park with its incomparable rock formations, are worth a day visit. All sorts of birdlife can be spotted too. The big raptors: eagles, vultures and buzzards are a common sight. Europe's second largest flamingo population at Laguna Fuente de Piedra (30 kms away) is not to be missed.
The house is only five minutes' drive from the town of Villanueva de la Concepcíon. A typically Spanish working town, it services the agricultural community and is not your typical tourist trap. It has all the amenities you'd need for a villa holiday: banks, post office, pharmacies. You can stock up on groceries here at the local supermarkets. The ancient town of Antequera with more facilities is only further down the road and the city of Malaga is half an hours' drive away.
Antequera lies in the very heart of Andalucía, 46 kilometres inland from the Costa del Sol, just off the motorway network which links Sevilla, Málaga, Granada and Córdoba. With Ronda and Marbella also close at hand it is, truly, the "Crossroads of Andalucía".
