ZA91 A great little holiday home in Orgiva

Granada, Las Alpujarras, Órgiva

Hidden in its own green and glorious world

A great little holiday home, neat and pretty inside, this really is a place to enjoy its wonderful outdoor spaces ...

"The house with its fantastic gardens and immaculate swimming pool were even better than you described and the owners were perfect hosts".

This recently built house is ideally situated on the edge of the market town of Órgiva, just a couple of minutes walk from the centre but surrounded by the verdant countryside of the Vega.

Views extend far and wide, across to the Contraviesa mountain range which rises up immediately before the Mediterranean Sea.

Through large metal gates one enters into a richly planted hidden world, a secret garden full of centenary olive trees growing among orange, lemon, banana and palm.

Bamboo and other tropical delights add still more shades of green to an already delightful scene.

Centre stage in these magical grounds is the lovely swimming pool (9m x 4.5m), surrounded by grassy banks and, of course, fruit trees. There is a bathing terrace alongside and steps down into the pool for safe and easy access.

Perfect!

"The villa was perfect for us. The garden is beautiful - the photos on your web site don't do it justice. We don't want to go back to work!"

A hammock is an alternative resting place, slung lazily between the trees. At the end of the pool, there’s an attractive barbecue area with a lovely, shaded, furnished terrace alongside.

At the front of the house, a huge palm stands guard in front of the attractive, vine-shaded terrace, another ideal spot for summertime living. This looks out over a traditional water fountain to the gardens.

The wonderful sound of trickling water takes one back to the world of Moorish Spain. On a warm, sunny day (as most are in Andalucía) this is heaven!

Inside, the open-plan living / dining room looks out to the terrace. A breakfast bar separates the living space from a fully equipped kitchen.

All on one floor, both bedrooms and the bathroom lead off from the living room.

"The villa was really pretty and the pool and terrace perfect. The garden was beautiful, a real pleasure to be in".

The house was built and decorated by the owners, a young couple from the town, with great care and pride, using local materials which include wood-beamed ceilings and rustic red tiled floors. Furnishings are tasteful and comfortable.

Neat, pretty and functional inside, what makes this house really special are its wonderful outdoor spaces. Close enough to town to be able to stroll there whenever you feel like it, here you will love the tranquillity of the wonderful gardens and nature all around.

In the heart of the evergreen Alpujarras (a legacy of the Moors who built the amazingly intricate system of irrigation waterways which keep the landscape green and fertile, fed by the snows melting high in the sierras above), the countryside all around, in the fertile Vale de Órgiva, is beautiful.

Swathes of orange and lemon trees, olives and pomegranates, bougainvillea, morning glory and jasmine bring joy to a sunny land.

Market day

Órgiva's Thursday morning market is a thriving affair, always an excuse for folk to meet up in order to catch up with the latest local news and gossip.

If you can be dragged away from this lovely spot, there’s lots to enjoy in and around the area. A short stroll will take you into town.

Órgiva is a busy little place but relaxed and picturesque nonetheless, situated in a wide river valley which runs between the rugged Sierra Nevada and the coastal mountains (Lújar and Contraviesa) which rise up only to crash down again into the palm fringed beaches of the Costa Tropical.

Views are superb, with the often snow capped peaks of Sierra Nevada to the north and the graceful curves of Sierra Lújar dominating the horizon to the south.

Alongside its numerous street cafes and bars, Órgiva also offers small supermarkets, banks, a post office, a small cinema and a 24 hour emergency medical centre. Its Thursday morning market is a thriving affair, always an excuse for country folk to meet up in order to catch up with the latest local news and gossip.

Beyond lies Granada

The mesmerising Alhambra Palace and its exquisite gardens, the ancient Arab quarter ... an inspiring and very beautiful town which is a joy to visit.

Beyond lies Granada, one of the great cities of the Moorish Empire, an inspiring and very beautiful town which is a joy to visit. It’s not a big city and it just invites you to walk around, taking in the sights and sounds, stopping here and there at any one of the myriad of street-side bars.

The top-class ski slopes in the high Sierra Nevada are only a little further.

And if you want a little beach life, it’s just half an hour’s drive from here to the Costa Tropical and its Mediterranean resort towns Salobreña, Almuñecar and Nerja.

On this stretch of coast you can choose between fairly isolated, beautiful coves or any one of the different sized resort towns.

Cheerful, peaceful, laid back places in the best tradition of the Spanish seaside, a relaxed lunch at one of the beach bars is highly recommended – even in winter if the sun is shining!

And there’s also plenty to enjoy right here in the wonderful mountain world of Las Alpujarras. From the snows to the sea, there are panoramic views in every direction, from the peaks of Veleta and Mulhacén to the southern sierras and the Mediterranean beyond. And lovely little Moorish villages in the high mountains to explore.

For the energetic there’s wonderful hiking in the mountains, year-round cycling and fabulous horse riding, as well as water-sports and golf on the coast.
