In the heart of picturesque Gaucín, this house is warm and welcoming. Traditional character and charm are delightfully combined with all mod cons to make a real home-from-home ...
On three floors, each of them carefully and creatively refurbished, the house retains all its wonderful rustic character and timeless charm.
This superbly renovated house in a quiet, traffic-free cu-de-sac near the foot of Gaucín village is both spacious and stylish, a really attractive home-from-home.
Just a few minutes stroll from local shops, restaurants and bars, here you can enjoy the very best of being in a very fashionable and classically beautiful pueblo blanco with stunning views over the glorious sweep of countryside below the village, to the Rock of Gibraltar, the Mediterranean and the coastline of Morocco beyond.
It’s big, with the living space spread over three floors, each of them carefully and creatively refurbished, entirely in keeping with the rustic character and traditional charm of the original building. It’s lovely!
Wooden beams, twisty walls, hand glazed tiles, little nooks and crannies, a choice of terrace and garden areas, beautifully weathered terracotta floors – it has bags and bags of character; but there’s all mod cons too – air conditioning in most rooms, central heating, satellite TV, a well appointed kitchen, heated splash pool …
Wooden beams, twisty walls, hand glazed tiles, little nooks and crannies ... it's almost like stepping back in time.
One enters from the little street into the lower living room. It’s almost like stepping back in time! A couple of rocking chairs either side of a lovely old wood burner, an antique coffee table to hand, colourful ceramics and the rich red hues of the Moroccan carpet complimenting white walls and wooden beams. “Almost” because in the corner is a good sized TV (which receives Freeview programme’s via satellite) and a DVD player.
The three spacious bedrooms are also on this floor. At the front of the house, with views to the street, is a pretty double bedroom (with king-sized bed). A naturally cool room, this is the only bedroom which doesn’t have air conditioning.
At the rear of the property there’s a neat twin room with the beds separated by an archway and a second double.
A town house which cleverly integrates the best of the new with the Andaluz lifestyle of days long gone by.
Both of these bedrooms have doors which open to a rear balcony making the best of the view over the pool and garden below, to the hills and dales beyond the few village houses across the valley.
Both have modern (efficient) air conditioning / heating wall units.
A bathroom with a shower over the bathtub completes the distribution on this floor. The washing machine is located in here.
This is a house with lots of steps, some of them unguarded so it’s not one to choose if you have young children (under five) or anyone who is not so spritely.
Delightfully rustic stone steps lead down to the kitchen and dining room on the lower ground floor, one to the left, the other to the right. The kitchen is lovely, with a really pretty, country-cottage style and feel. And well equipped too, with an eye-level electric oven, 5 ring gas hob, microwave, dishwasher, toaster, kettle and a sandwich toaster. At its rear there’s a breakfast table with bench seating and a little pantry. It’s a welcoming room, one you will be pleased to spend time in.
On the other side of the stairway is a neat and characterful dining room, its walls partly hewn from the natural rock face. It houses a classy, dark wood and glass dining table which comfortably seats six.
The pretty, walled garden, complete with a covered dining terrace and an attractive splash pool, is a lovely spot to wile away dreamy afternoons
Both the kitchen and dining room have double doors which open to the walled garden outside. It’s a good size with plenty of space for sunbathing, shrubs, roses and pot plants lending colour and joy.
A cane and wood beamed covered al-fresco dining area immediately outside the kitchen extends into the garden. Here a big Moroccan dining table easily seats six, roses clamber up the supporting pillar, the little pool glistens azure blue just below and … all is right with the world!
The splash pool is bigger than many (3.5 m x 2 m) and a very attractive addition; it has a wide low shelf at one end where you can sit with the water lapping around your middle, your legs dangling into the deeper end which goes down to 1½ metres in depth. It can be heated (for a supplementary charge) to give it a very pleasant boost in Spring and Autumn months.
Extending across the whole of the upper floor, the second living room has a great feeling of light and space with windows on both sides of the room.
Returning to the lower living room, stairs go up from here to a really big upper lounge which extends across the whole floor area, the stairs coming up in the centre. It has a great feeling of light and space with windows on both sides of the room. There’s casual seating on one side, but its the other side that is the main sitting area.
Comfy sofas and bench seating are gathered around the log fire (there’s an air conditioning / heating wall unit too). Books, DVD’s, ceramics and artifacts are neatly arranged in the attractively built-in wall displays. There’s another TV and DVD player.
On the other side of the room a drinks cupboard with a small fridge could come in handy!
Here you can watch the sun setting over the tiled roof tops of the village and, on clear days, you will be able to see across the Mediterranean to Morocco.
There is a second bathroom on this floor too (with walk-in shower, no bath tub) and doors open to the ample sized terrace at the back. Views are far and wide over the Genil valley to the coast beyond. Here you can watch the sun setting over the tiled roof tops of the village and, on clear days, you will be able to see across the Mediterranean to Morocco. There’s a parasol, a couple of loungers and … plenty of sun.
More steps lead up to a higher terrace, a very secluded, covered spot which is ideal for those all important summer afternoon siestas! Or perhaps just to escape for an hour or two with a good book.
It’s just a couple of minutes walk from here to the restaurants, tapas bars and shops of the village. Gaucín is one of Spain’s most beautiful pueblos blancos, spectacularly situated on a mountain ridge, 629 meters above sea level. Views are breathtaking, over the Genal valley to Gibraltar, the Mediterranean and Morocco.
Gaucín is not only very pretty, it is also very well situated. Surrounded by nature reserves like the Sierra de Grazalema, Los Alconorcales and the Sierra de las Nieves, there’s plenty of wonderful walking and wildlife.
A beautiful 45 minute drive will take you across the mountains to Ronda, brimming with history and interest. The Mediterranean, with its many beaches, golf courses and lively marinas is less than 30 minutes away. If you wish, visit a different world, just take a boat trip to Tangiers in North Africa!
Other scenic drives will take you to Sevilla, Jerez or Cadiz.
And back, of course, to this lovely town house with all its character and charm. Pretty as a picture inside, its calm yet colourful with a really relaxing ambience.
