A hilltop hideaway for four or a perfect love nest for two
Blue Skies and Sunshine
In the heart of Andalucia.
Just a few hundred metres away from the main house, Casa de La Era stands alone on a high hilltop where the farm’s threshing circle (‘era’ ) was once located. You reach the house by following a looping track down and across a river bed before cutting up a steep, concreted section of oleander-lined road to the top of the ridge from where the views are even more dizzy than from the main house.
The house looks unassuming from the outside, a simple single story building whose sienna-coloured walls echo the colours of the surrounding hills during Andalucia’s long, hot summers.
Watching the children play in the pool
beneath the shade of an ancient oak tree.
Once you’re inside things take on a really cosy and rustic feel in an airy, all-in-one kitchen, sitting room and dining area. Three double sofas and a glass-topped table face a wafer-bricked fireplace and a corner TV whilst the same terracotta ladrillos (bricks) pattern the floor.
Just beyond the sitting room area is a round table and four captain-style chairs and to one side, in a high welsh dresser where you’ll find plenty of glasses, cutlery and crockery.
Simply a great place to chill out
things take on a really cosy and rustic feel
The room’s high ceiling is supported by concrete beams painted in peppermint green and the same colour has been used in a frieze of tiles, depicting country working scenes, that runs round the tiled work surface in the kitchen. Separated from the rest of the room by a tile-topped breakfast bar the kitchen is small but, thanks to it being open-sided, doesn’t feel cramped.
There’s a fridge freezer, a gas oven and hob, a double sink with drainer and a small dishwasher whilst all of the pots, a juicer and a coffee perculator are tucked away beneath the work surface on open-fronted shelves. Hanging from bars of stainless steel above the work surface are draining and spice racks as well as frying pans and mixing bowls. A metal-topped table on wheels can provide an extra island for prepping your meals.
Just right for a family with young children or, better still, for a couple looking for a truly peaceful and utterly private hideaway.
There are two bedrooms. One of these has two single beds and an additional bunk bed made of varnished pine. All of them have duvets with bright, geometric patterned covers: this room is really only suitable for kids. The second bedroom has twin beds, pushed close together, backed by upholstered headboards: the same ornately patterned fabric has been used for the curtains which frame a window looking out to the front driveway. The room also has simple concrete roof beams, painted in the same shade of peppermint green as you find next door in the living room, with wardrobe doors in the same colour.
Both rooms have airconditioning units and plug-in wall radiators and share the bathroom that lies between them. Its sink unit, bath and
walls are clad in the white tiles whilst a similar frieze to the one in the kitchen adds warmth and colour.
Heavy, studded antique doors lead out from the house to a north-facing, covered terrace where you’ll find garden chairs and a table for four. A neatly tended lawn leads down to a kidney-shaped pool which measures in at roughly 7m x 3.5m. And just below the pool, beneath the shade of an ancient oak tree, is a second bench table fashioned out of pine poles and planks.
This is a house that might be just right for a family with young children or, better still, for a couple looking for a truly peaceful and utterly private hideaway.
